I know that the online gameplay of PSOE1&2 for the Gamecube has been shut down for a while, but I was just curious what exactly the game was like offline. Is it just like a normal RPG and does it have all the features? Basically I was just wondering if it is still worth buying even though you won't be usingthe online portion of it.
i have plunged 450 hours into Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II (Gamecube). And I never played the online mode. The great thing about this game is that you can co-op with up to four players in splitscreen. No other RPG has such an amazing multiplayer mode.
Can the entire game be played in split screen multiplayer? If so, that's awesome. And to think I'm gonna get it for $5 from Gamestop almost seems like a steal :3
Haha. This is a game which i played offline only. Neither my Dreamcast nor latter Gamecube were connected to the internet. Nevertheless, it remains one of my most-played titles.I think it's a very addictive title. Going to an area defeaating all the stong enemies AGAIN, just to raise your experience points for stronger attacks, more MP and HP and, Mesta and abilities. I think the game also has a more than excellent (dynamic) soundtrack, especially during the Ragol and Cave area's. Excellent, highly recommended as a offline videogame in my opinion.

Yeah, the game can be played entirely split-screen and is just as awesome offline. The game is quite rare these days too.. For $5 you should definitely go for it.
Also worth pointing out that the official reveal for PSO2 is on the 24th of this month. Though I wouldn't expect to see it released this year (certainly not in English) and it'll likely be based more on the more recent Universe games, which were far inferior.. Plus, charging a monthly fee for a Diablo style multiplayer game is laughable these days, especially when we're getting games like Guild Wars 2 shortly.
You know you can still play it online? There's a free client for PSO Blue Burst that gets you Episode 1, 2, and 4, all playable online on your PC Only problem is you pretty much need a USB gamepad. I'd kill to have a Gamecube controller for my PC But, yeah, I burned like 150 hours on offline multi on my Gamecube. It's totally awesome. I loved Phantasy Star Zero because it was more like E 1/2 than that crappy Universe game. But being able to run and gun with a pistol or having the dodgeroll would have been cool Another thing that sucks about 1/2 is that you lose half of your action palate when you get a photon blast. That was partially solved in Zero, and completely solved in Blue Burst Anyways, final word is that E1/2 is a blast. I'd recommend Blue Burst over it, but you can never go wrong having a Gamecube game
New name, same game.

Always wondered what this game would be online. Yeah, I've only got to experience it offline too. Made it to about Level 30 and quit. Didn't even make it to the second episode. Guess it's about due time I started the game back up again, eh?

It's possible to play the GCN version of PSO Ep I&II online for free through the private server if you modify the game's network options (the instructions are on the website). Alternatively you can download the PSO Blue Burst client from the private server's website and play it on your PC without messing with any settings. The system reqs for PSOBB are pretty low IIRC. Oh, and I agree with Deesotilio that a USB gamepad is highly recommended. Even an X360/PS3-type pad works well for it.
I might add that the private server basically has Sega's silent approval at this stage, since it has been running for many years and is the only way to play the game online anymore.
The GameCube version is pretty good in split screen multiplayer - infact it's not really any different to online so if you have some friends willing to sit around and play a multi-player RPG with you, then it's a good buy. Actually, even if you don't, offline is still a lot of fun too.
I'd say the Dreamcast version was my most played online game ever - I don't really play games much online now and never really did before either. I found PSO to be a lot of fun, though, and was very addictive. I miss the online mode but I don't think I miss it enough to try any of the methods suggested - I'll just hope for a remake, sequel or re-release some time in the future.
I played a silly amount of hours on the DC version, online and off. I never got my GC online, but I had to play through for the extra features they added. I wanted to love the DS version of PSO but it never quite cut the mustard for me. Until the hackers took over, there was a real sense of online community on PSO. Watching the YouTube clips of the moment the servers went off is a little sad (very odd I suppose, but a little sad).
It's been a long time since I've posted in the forums, but this happened to be a game I was thinking about and happened to notice this thread while reading through several others. I've always personally wondered about this game, but I really don't know anything about it. I know it can go upwards of $40 for used copies nowadays and I once saw it for $5 at a yardsale, but I was young and didn't know what I was even looking at. I own Phantasy Star III for the Genesis in box and enjoyed the couple of hours that I put into it, but beyond that I don't know anything about the series to be truthful. So what I'm trying to ask, what is it exactly and is it worth seeking out for possibly a high price?
