@BlueOcean yeah that's what i was thinking "might as well wait for the next gen"

Can anyone remind me how much the stories in GoW depend on previous games.
I played 1 and 2 back on the 360 but can't remember them in any detail. Trying to work out if I need to replay everything before GoW5!?
@Dezzy If you've already played the first two, then you can safely leave those alone, but 3 and 4 might be handy to play first. For one thing, you'll get a couple of reminders/flashbacks that'll bring you right back into the story, and on the whole, even though the story line isn't THAT heavy, there's still a continuity in the games, that might get disrupted if you play them in the wrong order.
But what you could also do, is look up one of these game story videos on YouTube. There's dozens of them, and they simply retell the entire story of the previous games by pasting together cut scenes and bits of gameplay.
Alternatively, you could also look up a Gears of War Wiki page, which will also summarize all that has happened before, and which might be important and/or handy to know.

Question, as I don't use my One enough to know better: but does xbox live service (not a sub but the actual service itself) have to be active for disc games to work? I'm asking because I went to start up AC: Odyssey this morning at around 3am and it kept exiting saying that the service was unavailable (what service? I don't have xbox live gold anymore and the box is up to date)...is this a ubisoft thing?
This is why I spend most of my time on the switch. I really miss pick up and play gaming. I think...I think I'm getting to old for the current infrastructure.

@Ryu_Niiyama I'm suspecting it to be a Ubisoft thing, because once you've got an active profile, and your console is up to date, you should be able to play any and all local games, whether digitally installed, or installed from disc, but perhaps @NEStalgia can add his two cents on this, assuming you're talking about one of the Xbox One specific Assassin's Creed games, which he also owns, if I remember correctly.

@Ryu_Niiyama That's pretty weird, but if it's at thing at all, it's definitely a Ubisoft thing. I wonder if they left their PC always-on-DRM in the XBox version?! The XBox itself doesn't need to be online, and the XBox doesn't need Live to be online. It'll complain that it can't sign you in, but it'll let you play, as long as it's either physical, or is digital and is your "home XBox."
That's an all new level of UbiFail(TM) if they actually left the always-online uPlay DRM in a console game.....
@Ryu_Niiyama Also, @DarthNocturnal has a point that I do sometimes have games that fail to start, they'll show the splash, drop back to Home, and go nowhere....usually a reboot is required when that happens. But I've never had "service is unavailable" unless I'm running on my non-primary X1 (which does need to sign in to verify ownership) and XBL is down.
Online games will fail to start if XBL is down...something like Destiny 2, etc, that needs the subscribed service to even function. But can try enabling offline mode to see if it will just skip trying to check. It's in the system settings.
Thanks everyone. I'll take a look when I get in tonight.

@NEStalgia UbiFail? Haha, good one. Better copyright that before someone else grabs it. You might even make a little cash from the subsequent biddings...
On the topic of Ubisoft (best 3rd party publisher in the business ) we may finally be seeing a new splinter cell game. Hard to tell at this point based on the response but I honestly think he wasn't joking, love this time of year!!
@redd214 Well, the update in the article actually says that he WAS joking, so for the time being, I'd probably file this under "I'll believe it when I see it"...

@ThanosReXXX I read the article, I know. Thank you though.
Also if anyone is a fan of single player/id shooters, Rage 2 is a pretty solid game. Was planning on waiting for it to drop in price but used some bday money on it and am having a blast with it! I can see it getting a bit repetitive and the quests/story are far from impressive but the moment to moment gameplay is very fluid and fun!
@NEStalgia you say it's hard to believe they both failed at the hardware level but your forgetting something, it's an XBOX and let's be honest here they don't have a great track record when it comes to hardware stability
remember this is my 2nd AFTER my first had a hardware failure
and i'm pretty sure it's not anything i did, i take good care of my systems
you know what i might just open it up and take a look, see if anything is wrong, it's out of warranty anyway

@FullbringIchigo That negative track record you're mentioning, only counts for the Xbox 360, not for the original Xbox or the Xbox One, so although I do understand your annoyance about this happening to you, it's a bit silly to put all generations of Xboxes on one heap, to be honest.
Could just be a case of bad luck, though. Too bad it's already out of warranty, otherwise, you could have taken it back to the shop you bought it from. But perhaps you could try and contact the official (online) help desk, or check out the Xbox forums to see if they can still help you out. There's quite a few users in there, so I could imagine at least some of them having experienced similar issues, or perhaps having an idea what's going on with your console.
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
@ThanosReXXX well i have been through 5 OG XBOXS, 3 360's and now 2 XB1's so for me it has a very bad track record
(P.S if your wondering i only ever had 1 PlayStation 3 fail on me and 1 Dreamcast, never had a Nintendo fail)

@FullbringIchigo Well, that really does sound like an incredible, but very personal, stroke of bad luck.
Either that, or I actually do have to wonder if you really take good care of your stuff, like you mentioned to @NEStalgia, because burning through 5 OG Xboxes, without ever having a hand in it yourself, sounds rather extreme.
Could of course be that other people in your household may (without you knowing) have been partially responsible for that, perhaps, but I can't imagine that all of that is on Microsoft. And considering how many other different consoles have failed on you, that could hardly be filed under coincidence, no offense.
The bad reputation of the Xbox 360 is well deserved, and even I suffered a RROD on my original edition, but on the other hand, Microsoft's service is also second to none: back then, I sent it in for repairs, got it back within the space of ten days, and it is still happily chugging away to this very day, never had any other problem with it since.
And I never had any problems with any of my other consoles or handhelds either, so what you've experienced, certainly isn't par for the course, and definitely isn't part of Xbox's or Microsoft's "reputation".
I'd still say you might be able to get some worthwhile feedback from either Microsoft themselves, or from their user community, through those links I've pointed out earlier. Who knows, perhaps the solution to your problem is really simple.
