Dezzy

In case anyone missed it, 3 random and unimportant games were just added to backcompat.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

DarkRula

TRU has indeed shut up here in the UK, but if the Gamestation store in Halesowen is any indication, it'll stand as a relic for years upon years. Unless one of the supermarkets want to try and compete against the nearby Asda.

@NEStalgia As I said, not being on home soil leaves me kind of in the dark what that is all truly about, but I can imagine that the sneers towards hybrids/electric cars is probably something along the lines of it not being real cars, like the bigger, better, more fuel/oil guzzling American monster trucks that are called cars...

Well, anyway, that is more along the lines of the general reputation we still have in Europe nowadays, and the idiot currently sitting in the White House certainly isn't helping one bit with helping to improve that image...

I think you can probably imagine how glad I am that my Dutch is fluent and completely accent-free...

@Dezzy And those games are... ?

ThanosReXXX

@DarthNocturnal Sensible World of Soccer? Is that a remake of the 16 bit game? I never even knew that existed. But in any case, gotta agree with @Dezzy here. What a lousy bunch of games to add, while there are SO many other titles that they could have chosen, that are FAR better. Oh, well... I'll keep myself busy with current gen games then, waiting for the next BC batch, I guess...

Forza 7 is actually surprisingly fun. I really didn't think it would be, but it manages to be captivating while still feeling really different from Horizon. I even splurged, $12 on the car pack (normally $30.) Normally I wouldn't care but it's a good price and I figure some of the unusual stuff I'd want to pick are locked away in it. I imagine it's probably a watered down experience without playing it in full manual though either with a stick & wheels, or at least giving the clutch + shift Elite controller setup a try. I didn't try it yet...still learning the ropes of racing let alone manual trans with it.

@NEStalgia Well, whaddya know... There's a new one born every day...

@ThanosReXXX I guess this means I'm one step away from a NASCAR beer hat and an Earnhardt shirt?

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Make it a Danica Patrick or a Julia Landauer shirt, and I would respect you a little bit more...

But it is actually quite entertaining to see how the entire House of Forza has slowly but surely won you over...

NEStalgia

@DarthNocturnal Well that sounds like it's time to switch back to Sunset Overdrive then....

@ThanosRexxx I dunno, I'm out of touch with the modern world, Dale Sr. was about all I know about racing after Mario Andretti . NASCAR itself sneaked up on me, all I knew as a kid was F1 I'm familiar with Danica though, I mean she was in a Sonic game after all......and on basically every other piece of advertising Never heard of Julia....maybe she'll get into MK9 and I'll find out.

And yeah, Forza has won me over despite not even really liking racing games very much. It's amazingly just a very well made video game, racing or otherwise, and I didn't expect that. I have GT:S sitting there...fuzzy dice and all...but can't imagine it being as fun somehow.

@NEStalgia Whaaaattt??? Never heard of Julia Landauer? What kind of American are you?
(I was simultaneously thinking that you're bound to make someone angry with that comment as well)

She's about to become more famous than Danica Patrick, if she isn't already, seeing as she's the first woman in racing who's ever achieved such a high ranking. From the wiki page:

The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series formed the Lady Cup, a championship system for female drivers in 2014. In 2016, a record 18 different women started a race in one of NASCAR's touring series. Julia Landauer was the most successful within her respective series, finishing 4th in points in the K&N Pro Series West with seven top-five finishes in fourteen races.

She may not be of Danica Patrick caliber looks-wise, but I think she's definitely not unattractive, and she's smart too: https://www.bizjournals.com/newyork/news/2016/02/10/meet-juli...

Anyway, enough of that, back to the actual topic:

I'll let you in on a little secret: even in main series Forza, I don't use manual gears either. I do have all the other stuff activated, so no auto-break and full damage models (with the accompanying effects on the ability to continue driving, or not) and all that, but I hate manual shifting. I'm not THAT much of a racing sim purist.

And yeah, just leave that copy of GT:S in it's foil wrapper. Might even end up earning you some extra cash in a year or 5, seeing as you'll have a mint copy. It definitely isn't a match for Forza, and the entire series already hasn't been, ever since Forza 4, when Turn 10 took the crown from Polyphony, and since then, they haven't been able to get it back. GT is still a good racing sim, but in certain (arguably critical) aspects (depending on sim lover's wants/needs of such games), it's the lesser game.

No manual gears?! You guys are heathens lol😜

redd214

NEStalgia

@ThanosReXXX Hah, I could only anger someone that's a racing fan. Danica became a household name due to mainstream marketing tie-ins with GoDaddy (and....Sonic the Hedgehog All Stars racing Transformed......) but I take it Julia isn't (yet) a mainstream marketing personality, and just sticks to the sport. Sounds like that will change soon. I'm always 5-10 years behind the pop culture curve.

If you didn't gather from my Forza history....I don't follow racing

Yeah once I get used to more of the details I'll look into the damage/assists stuff. Right now I follow the "if you ain't rubbin' you ain't racin" philosophy to get by Auto-brake is almost annoying because manually doing it tends to cause more negative effect than doing nothing. I'm surprised no manual trans for you.....a European that likes auto? You'll out you real identity! I thought that was a sin like calling "football" "soccer" over there

I'm not into it either, so I'm a heathen, but Forza 7 does feel almost like it's missing something if going automatic. I Dl'ed the manual & manual w/ clutch control scheme for the Elite but I'm far from ready to try using it. I don't think it would work well without the extra buttons though. The Elite was kind of clearly designed with Forza in mind given the paddles over the grips rather than down the center like FPSs usually do.

@NEStalgia Good review, that. But it certainly does paint a very bleak picture for people contemplating picking this up, though. And that first comment underneath the article is pure gold. Forza Horizon for the win!

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

NEStalgia

@ThanosReXXX Yeah, it felt bleak. In a typical Ubisoft way when they get lost but want to hit the market. There's lots of flash, lots of "styled design".....but it all feels empty and weightless to me. Horizon's open world feels alive. NFS open worlds (at least when Criterion did them, haven't tried newer ones yet), felt alive. This....still feels worse than Crew 1 to me. The review hit that on the head. Prettier brightly colored stylization, but it's just cars and races without coherence. It really would have benefited by NOT having an open world if he world wasn't part of the experience.

I've had fun with it the 20 or so hours I put in. That PREview does bring up some valid points though. All in all I'm excited to play it on Friday, already got my crew ready to go😊

redd214

ThanosReXXX

@redd214 So, I guess that's three against one on the auto gear front then, huh? Might as well call this thread "The Den of Heathens" from now on...

@NEStalgia I meant NASCAR fans. NASCAR isn't real racing, far as I'm concerned. And there are enough fellow Americans on here for there to at the very least be one die-hard NASCAR fan, so if he or she happens to read your comment (and now mine), that might result in some minor outrage over our blasphemy....

As for using auto gears: In games, I just don't like manual gears. With a controller, it just doesn't feel right/natural to me, and I never went all out on the whole racing seat and controls setup either. For some consoles and games, I do have steering wheels and pedals, but no gear sticks, although I do believe that one of my GameCube steering wheels has those butterfly pedals directly underneath the steering wheel, so I guess I kinda do have the full setup in one instance, well... except for the seat and control frame, then.

Oh, and just for the record: I don't follow racing either. I just (wrongfully) assumed you'd know, since you're still residing within the borders of our great nation, and over here, they all think that every American knows (everything) about NASCAR. Guess that prejudice/stereotyping kind of rubbed off on me, I guess. Small wonder: after all these years of living over here, I probably must have adapted at least some of the habits and viewpoints they adhere to 'round these parts...

@ThanosReXXX huge Nascar fan here. I take no offense to people not liking it. I've enjoyed it since I was a kid, been to tons of races and actually have taken classes on more than one occasion. It's most certainly is real racing trust me. Perhaps not the most exciting for some but definitely real
