@Dezzy Well, yeah, but I meant the proposition of "just getting the X for $200 more" because of storage alone doesn't really pan out. Because for $500 you get an X with 1TB, and for $520 you get an S with 1.5TB, and since the S uses less space on the SSD than the X does, if we average at 30% it comes out close to 2TB equivalence in terms of the amount of games you can store at once. So basically if we play loose with the numbers, for $500 you can have a 4k console, for $300 you can have a 1080p console with 65% of the functional storage, or for $520 you can have a 1080p console with 195% of the functional storage - almost double the games.

So there's definitely options in the pricing. If storing more games at once is more important than 4k, an XSeS with a 1TB card is about the same price and (almost) double the functional storage as an X. Of course if you want the 4k, you get the X, if you want double the storage you're up to $720, and you're maxed out completely there until bigger storage comes out someday (or you hot swap $200 game cartridges and party like it's 1996. XBOX SIXTY FOOOOURRRR!!)

@BlueOcean Sure, sure, but I can get 4 consoles, a 4k monitor, and a 1TB addon for less than a C9 or CX runs today...

And before everyone starts complaining about the price of SSD storage for these new consoles, just remember to keep your costs in perspective:

Qty 1: 1TB Addon Card

Costs about the same as:
Qty 1: Destruction All Stars: Yes It Ships at Launch, No You Don't Need to Know What it is
Qty 1: Demon's Souls: In Case You Missed it the First Time or Its 3 nearly Identical Sequels
Qty 1: Spiderman 4K: Beyond Checkerboarding

At Sony's new pricing. Kinda makes you appreciate the value of the SSD, huh?

Edit: And in case anyone really wants a hankering for Demon's Souls, you can just play the three newer games on Game Pass on your 1TB addon card......

The SSD expansion is probably cheaper than if it were a Vita memory card of the same size.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

BruceCM

I'll have a Demon's Souls Remaster, @NEStalgia .... Since I did indeed miss it at launch! Do you count the 3 Dark Souls games as it's nearly identical sequels, then?

@BruceCM Yep. I mean, it's all the same game. You wander the same decrepit hallways in silence killing stuff for the sake of killing stuff, and have the same save/restore points. It's not like there's anything terribly different between all the borefests. Sekiro adds a grappling, that's at least interesting.....

NEStalgia

BruceCM

Well, u don't have to get any of them, @NEStalgia.... I think they should use your titles, though

@BruceCM Haha, yeah I don't plan on getting the first 2. I don't even know what the first one is, because nobody knows what the first one is, because 6 weeks before launch they haven't felt it important to tell anyone what it is. But you can preorder it for 69.99!

Souls isn't for me. I own DS1 on Switch and DS2 and 3 on XBox. They're interesting, but frustrating and boring. I also have Sekiro on xbox....I'm more into that one though I haven't spent time with it. But I have to say of the genre, Sony exclusive Nioh is the most enjoyable. I suck badly at it, but it's a good game. More action-y than From's entries.

Spiderman, I'm on the fence. I feel insulted by the whole thing as a day 1 PS4 customer (complete with exclusive pin for preordering!) - I haven't played it yet and I was going to hold back for playing some exclusives for the inevitable PS5 enhancements that apparently wont exist. Being told to rebuy it is just abusive. OTOH I probably would buy MM which makes the $20 upgrade a little more palatable. In reality I'll probably just wait for a sale.

@NEStalgia And don't forget the DualShock5, I mean, DualSense1, you need new controllers for PS5 as it's not compatible with PS4 controllers, not even for playing PS4 games on PS5 because we believe in generations.

@BlueOcean The controller thing I can't fault them. I think WiiU and XSeXS are the only consoles that do let you bring your old controllers over, so that's an unusual trait - and it could be argued XBox failed to innovate with new controllers, and I would somewhat agree what that stance. They missed a big chance to make motion control for shooters a big staple in their hardware this gen, and I think it's a serious missed chance. I can't stand playing shooters without either mouse or motion. XBox supports mouse though, so that's a huge plus.

So I'll let the new controller slide. I'll probably like some of the updates in there, and that's normal for "new console" to mean "new input." Otherwise we'd be stuck with The Duke! But keeping my precious Elite is such a beautiful plus.... It's not as nice as Elite 2, but having to rebuy a $150 premium controller for a console would suck.

Grumblevolcano

@NEStalgia The GC controller is the most supported controller, it's usable on:

  • GC
  • Wii
  • Wii U
  • Switch

And all because Smash players refuse to use anything else

A close second will be PS3 and Xbox 360 music game controllers (i.e. Rock Band and Guitar Hero instruments) if Rock Band 4 works on PS5 and Series X/S.

@NEStalgia Yeah, I mean for PS4 games but fair enough. I also have the Elite Series 1, I wonder if they'll release the Elite Series 3 to add the share button and probably go back to removable batteries. The Elite Series 2 has a built-in battery and no share button.

Wii U is wonderful, you can use a lot of controllers on it. Switch, though? Nah.

@Grumblevolcano LOL, sort of, though you can't actually use the GC controller for most games, so.....

Oh, and don't forget PS Move. It was a disastrous Wii clone on PS3, a required peripheral for PSVR on PS4, and will carry over with PSVR on PS5!

Ralizah

@BlueOcean Switch easily supports WAY more controllers than Wii U with the 8bitdo wireless adapter.

@Ralizah

Yeah that’s one of the best things about the Switch. I got a GBros for using SNES Classic/NES Classic/Wii Pro Controller. It picks up my Retrobit Bluetooth Saturn Controller for other 2D games. The Retrobit Adaptor picks up almost everything else. I’ve also got a Mayflash which is currently in my PS3 but allows use of Wii U Pro Controller. Very flexible and open.

@Ralizah Oh well, unofficially yes but it's a shame that you can't use the GameCube Controller Adapter for any other game than Super Smash Bros. not even now that the first GameCube game has arrived. Official Nintendo GameCube port for Switch doesn't support the official GameCube Controller Adapter for Switch. If you tinker with Wii U a little bit you can play GameCube games natively and use the GameCube Controller Adapter unofficially but out of the box you can use the Wii Remote, nunchuk, Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro, SNES Wii controller, GamePad, Wii U pro controller... and none works on Switch unless you buy a third-party device.

@Eel so it's xbox storage $360?

the little punk with the psp can afford it easy!

I actually only got a PSP when I was already in college

Those darned guys playing Monster Hunter peer-pressured me into buying it... By having fun without me.

Good news is, by then it was already a budget console.

Bloop.
