I've been interested in analyzing games and their development stories for a while now, and I want to make some video essays analyzing how certain games stand out by giving an experience that is unique from other games, how their creators personal experiences inspire them, and what makes popular games resonate with a large crowd. I'm planning to start with an essay on hollow knight, but I'm having trouble thinking of a good central thesis for it. I'm toying with the idea of how it takes past gaming trends from past eras, (specifically the varied cartoonish and whimsical mascot-esque characters and worlds of the retro era, with the more mature and darker tone and storytelling of the HD era) to create something totally new and groundbreaking. It doesn't seem enough for a whole video essay though, and I'm trying to figure out how to bring together the bits I research about the game and its creation into something more concrete and elaborate. Does anyone here have any tips?
