I knew going in that it would be a Souls clone.
What I know now is that it is an EXCELLENT Souls clone.
It takes the main thing I like in Souls games (the stellar, merciless combat) and ditches a lot of the stuff I didn't like (lack of tutorials, choppy framerate, lack of clarity in item descriptions and whatnot). I also noticed it seems to have a mission structure of sorts, which is fantastic, as I have a horrible sense of direction and inevitably get terribly lost in Souls games for hours at a time. Smaller, interconnected zones that don't connect to anything else are perfect for me.
I can't even begin to describe how much I love the fact that this game lets you sacrifice 1080p to make the framerate smooth. Nioh on PS4 is a much more enjoyable experience when played on action mode (what it seems to default to) than PS4 Souls games with their sluggish sub-30fps gameplay.
Not a huge fan of the murky visuals. That was one of my same issues with Bloodborne, too. I know we're getting all gritty and such, but can we please paint the environment in something other than muddy grays and browns?
It's not perfect, but at the moment, I'm super impressed with this.
@Ralizah Yeah, it's pretty fun. I like how it doesn't start you in absolute BS underpowered mode with nothing for stamina, like in Dark Souls 1.
Anyway in Nioh, as you change between "L," "N," and "H" equipment (still no idea what "N" is supposed to stand), you'll notice the color of your equipped weight changes. Under 25% is blue, over is green, over 75% (I think) is yellow, and over 100% is red. 100+ puts you into unplayable stamina-screwed mode where you'll literally lose to the first enemy with high level gear, so that's just a "spec into heavy armor" alarm bell. But blue ("L" armor) and green ("N" armor) equipment weight see your character dodge progressively faster the lighter you are (and with less stamina used). You basically decide what kind of build your character is going for: evade or block.
So, there are two numbers you see throughout the game. One is amrita and the other is... something else. the nature of amrita is obvious. It's just the equivalent of souls or blood echoes. What does that other number you accumulate pertain to, though?
@Tsurii Same. I was fine navigating around Skyrim. Even something like GTA is fine. The minor increase in linearity is worth not getting horribly lost like I often did in Souls.
I was speaking more to the environments with the comment about murky visuals. It's easy for me to not notice when land dips into ocean and to go plunging to my depths, for example. Actually, the whole "instant death the moment you step into deep water" thing is incredibly annoying.
I also love the fact that you can play more aggressively or defensively, depending on your stance. The whole stances thing was weird to me at first, but it really opens up combat options.
@Tsurii I thought that might be it, but what do you use money for? I can't find a store anywhere.
I'd love to buy more of those potions. Whatever they're called. Although I'm at the point now where I only need them if I'm fending off two or three guys at once.
Anyone else see the ESRB description of Resident Evil VII? I'll spoiler tag it for people who are sensitive about that sort of thing.
"This is a survival-horror game in which players assume the role of Ethan, a man searching for his missing wife in a derelict mansion. From a first-person perspective, players explore the environment and use pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws to kill mutant creatures. Combat is accompanied by realistic gunfire, screams of pain, and exaggerated blood-splatter effects. As players progress through the story, cutscenes can depict instances of gore and intense acts of violence: a character’s arm dismembered by a chainsaw; a man’s leg taken off at the knee with a shovel; a character impaled through the face with a shovel. Some areas also depict mutilated corpses with exposed organs/viscera. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard in the dialogue."
Sounds like the plots of Resident Evil 1 and Silent Hill 2 had a baby. I'm so in!
@Ralizah Ok, now that sounds great. There were some concerns going around about it being primarily a PT/Outlast clone, which would be a different type of survival horror than the early RE games are known for (a psychological horror game with little action rather than a zombie/mutant jump scare survival horror with action). I think this is pretty reassuring.
@IceClimbers Yeah. They'd confirmed the presence of combat a while back, but hearing from a neutral third party that there are flamethrowers, shotguns, monsters, etc. makes it sound a lot more like a classic RE game.

@Peek-a-boo That's pretty useful! (although I already encountered some wrong dates).
Anyway, looks like there's plenty to come this year for me;
August: The Witcher 3 GOTY Edition (I still want to play it, and I think now is the best time)
October: The Last Guardian, Paper Mario Color Splash, Dragon Quest Builders, World of Final Fantasy
November: Gravity Rush 2, Final Fantasy XV
And depending on when they release: GNOG, Berserk
Not sure if I get all of them day one (especially some of the SE games, I really need to see how that plays out with all the DLC and whatnot, cause I wouldn't mind waiting for a definitive edition).
Not sure I understand magic in Nioh. So, you get scrolls... somehow? The first boss is tearing me apart (...lisa), so I want to gain a few levels (currently only level 13 or something) and try a new strategy.

@Ralizah It's not damaging spells so far, just buffs and debuffs. You have to invest into the magic skill or find mage hair (no really) to get skill points.
I suggest investing into your weapon stat and spirit first, though. Spirit levels 6-11 unlock different passive bonuses depending on which element of guardian you're using. You can view it on the guardian spirit equip screen.
@Haru17 Already spoke about INSIDE on the previous page and, after completing it this morning, I can happily say that it sits alongside The Witness and ABZÛ as my favourite indie games of this year.
The last twenty minutes was gleefully gruesome when it's new 'gameplay mechanic' was introduced, along with its horrific imagery!
I am not sure what the game is trying to tell me with its 1984-esque story however, I cannot help but feel that both LIMBO and INSIDE somehow shares the same universe, or a parallel one at the very least.
I balked at its price at first glance (£16) and yet, upon completion, I felt that the whole experience was more than worth the asking price. One of the real highlights of this generation so far.
@Peek-a-boo Oh, I totally think the overarching narrative of Inside is BS. Way too abstract to mean anything. What makes the game one of the best narratives / experiences of this generation is it's stellar scene direction. It's so great at introducing elements to have them pay off just a bit down the road. Not to mention so bold in where these story beats do go. Like, damn.
If I was disappointed by anything, it would be not getting a train level or seeing the giant sound wave monster after both were teased. I can live with that though.
By the way, I move to call all nondescript boy protagonists "Shinji" from here on out.
