@TheFrenchiestFry Eh, I mean, She-Hulk and Kate are certainly not what I'd consider MCU bait.
And quite frankly... The number of characters that aren't in /will be in the MCU in some form and have a history with the Avengers is rapidly dropping. You've got Hercules, Wonder Man, Miles Morales, Captain Britain, Spider-Woman, Jocasta (save a cameo), Red Hulk, Amadeus Cho and Black Knight as the only notable characters (ones who actually had any lasting impact). The X-Men and FF dual members are confirmed, as are Moon Knight, Wiccan, Hulkling, Kamela Khan etc.
And I'd wager you around half of those characters are planned and just not publicly announced yet, while others have rights issues for adaptations.
So quite frankly, I'm glad a game with such a limited roster is focusing on characters that made an impact and not bringing in ones like Starfox or Triathlon. Jennifer and Kate are both fan favorite characters who haven't had any sort of major appearance outside the comics just yet, like Kamela Khan. Giving them some spotlight is a good thing, even if they will show up in the MCU soon.
@Octane It's Square. Define "unfinished"? I mean they could wait 15 years and declare FFVII-R2 is now FFXVI and set set in a post apocalyptic setting and call it the same thing.
But really, they have to finish it. Their next 10 years of financials are probably based on it, and how else would they sell the "Complete Edition" and then the "Collector's Complete Edition" and then the "Complete Edition but this time with the true ending - Deluxe Edition", and then the "Ultimate Director's Edition featuring all the contents of Complete Edition but this time with the true ending - Deluxe Edition AND all DLC!" And then the "FFVII: Return of Aerith Edition with a new true ending DLC included (but the prior true ending not included, and not available DLC") and then the "VII Jenova Edition that includes BOTH TRUE ENDINGS"
That should tide them over until PS6 when they can do "VII Jenova Edition XHD 8k Remaster (but with no DLC, and the PS6 version is just an upscale of the Switch version)"
Of course they have to finish it!
@Anti-Matter Agree, I'd love to see a remake of most of the classics. IX being my favorite, but also XIII, because the original game's gameplay systems are a mess completely, and VI, arguably the best of all FF that gets overshadowed by VII "because FMV."
@link3710 I say that because it feels like the timing was intentional considering both of those characters just had their Disney+ shows announced
Also Dane Whitman actually got confirmed as a character in the Eternals movie (although we don't know whether he'll have the Black Knight alias) and Hercules is being heavily rumored for inclusion in a future Phase
Idk it just feels like they could be selecting more characters who are a bit further out from appearing in anything MCU related but most of these characters including Spider-Man are either in the MCU or are basically just around the corner. It doesn't help at all that the character models for the existing roster sans Spider-Man look a lot like their movie counterparts. Hawkeye may have a bald head but his costume looks a lot like his Civil War and Endgame suit with the purple accents
I’d like to see them chuck in some real die hard character choices like Doop, Hellcow and Squirrel Girl in the Avengers game just for the awkward reactions from people unfamiliar with them.
@TheFrenchiestFry I had a feeling you were going to tell me at least one of those I mentioned was in. But yeah, with Black Knight and Herc out as well as options that leaves... like 5 characters of note for an Avengers game. Less if you count the fact that Jessica Drew is getting a movie next year, albeit not in the MCU. Compared to nearly 3 dozen that have MCU counterparts, it's getting difficult to avoid them.
I mean, I'd prefer the game take a whole lot less from the MCU, but that's a different discussion entirely. I just think that by the time 2025 rolls around nearly every notable character will either have appeared or be announced, so avoiding them entirely isn't much of an option.
@link3710 Honestly I doubt Sony is going to be so lenient as to let Marvel Studios use any other character they own the rights to outside of the ones they collaborate on like Vulture, Mysterio, Shocker and Scorpion. Jessica Drew is apparently being featured in a Spider-Women spinoff from ITSV and Silk is getting a solo film set in Sony's shared universe with Venom and Morbius, so I feel like that's going to be off the table.
I imagine if Captain Marvel is implied to exist in this universe they could use Nova as well probably given both have cosmic power sets and Squirrel Girl has been depicted with other Avengers in the past too
I just personally wanted characters who aren't considered as mainstream. Even if some of them are MCU-bound like Blade and Moon Knight (who were featured in MUA3) I feel like they're going for all the safe and marketable picks when the Avengers name should just sell copies by itself
The roster all around is giving me serious MvCI vibes
@TheFrenchiestFry The Nova Corp was feature in Guardians of the Galaxy, through Sam Wilson hasn't appeared yet.
And I dunno. Neither She-Hulk, Kamela, or Kate Bishop sound like safe picks to me. Most people don't have a clue who any of those people are. I had expected none of those three to feature in the game after the initial impressions.
@link3710 I'd say She-Hulk is the most well known of the three considering she was featured in the Incredible Hulk animated series from the 90s in addition to being a playable character in Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Kamala Khan gained a lot of attention for being Marvel's first Muslim superhero to headline any of their comic series. In fact the character is endorsed by Barack Obama and they even added the term "Embiggen" to the official Webstar's Dictionary following her debut in the comics popularizing that word
Kate Bishop is semi-popular but coincidentally all three are about to get their own MCU Disney+ shows so it feels like the game is just getting in on that craze of trying to capitalize what's becoming hip and trendy in terms of characters, even if some of them aren't even properly associated with the core Avengers team to begin with

@TheFrenchiestFry Maybe. But like, what is the core Avengers team anyways? There hasn't been one since the 90s, just tons of splinter organizations. I don't think limiting it to characters who were Avengers prior to the turn of the century is the right move.
@link3710 I get that there are a multitude of Avengers teams but some characters like Kamala and Spider-Man don't even associate themselves with any of those teams outside major crossover events like the Civil Wars and Secret Wars. Plus the core team is missing Wasp, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, and given the game already loves to use characters being popularized by their movie appearances, I'm surprised that Hank Pym isn't even playable and that neither of those three have been mentioned to my knowledge. Carol Danvers has been mentioned and shown in pictures but nothing beyond that, and neither Black Panther or Vision have made it in which again, very surprising given they're super relevant after being featured in multiple MCU films

@TheFrenchiestFry Um? Kamela was on the Avengers main team for like, 5 years, or about half of her existence. She only left to form the Champions. And Spider-Man's time on the New Avengers is pretty iconic.
@link3710 Jessica Drew isn't getting a flick, I think you may have gotten it confused with a film about Silk or the animated Spider-Gwen.
On the topic of not knowing She-Hulk, Khan or Kate Bishop, they are legacy characters so they are fine with a vague they know and are similar to that other character.
I do agree with Avengers having so many variations already there doesn't need to be precisely the traditional Avengers line up and most Marvel heroes can be added to the roster. Like how The Defenders become TV Avengers even though that line up wasn't actually The Defenders. There's a couple of exceptions imo like The Punisher (who I know has been in a version or two at one point) but yeah, any Marvel hero will do at the end of the day as Marvel has become interchangeable with Avengers.
@TheFrenchiestFry if Squirrel Girl is in the game she needs to be overpowered to match her winning streak from the comics!
I think Square and Crystal Dynamics are going to experience a large bit of humility when the game’s user base ultimately drops like a lead balloon.
You can’t expect two fads (live service games and MCU) that have worked for other companies to just work for you as well. There are only so many live service games that justify constant content updates and have a large enough whale community to satisfy the investment. Especially with how much money and hype are riding on this project.
MCU is also kind of on its way out the door as a trend after Infinity War. There will still be movies and shows, but nothing will reach the interest or audience that storyline did. People need a reason to get reinvested in another plot with these characters, but this one looks below second rate.
A lot of signs are pointing to “dud” here, including the less than positive press it’s already getting.
@link3710 Wasn't Kamala allied with the Avengers only during Civil War II tho? I believe she split from the Avengers to form the Champions with people like Miles Morales immediately after that event concluded
Spider-Man was in New Avengers but I feel like he's only being put into this team solely for the fact that he's part of the main lineup now in the movies. If the game focused on different Avengers factions that would've been pretty cool. Plus to my knowledge New Avengers lineup with Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage and the Thing disbanded pretty quickly after Cage and Jessica Jones had their baby. In fact I think the original lineup for the New Avengers was formed to begin with just because the original Avengers team disbanded, so in a way they did kind of take over as their replacements so it does kind of justify calling Spider-Man a full time Avenger

@jump Animated Jessica Drew is, yeah. It's the Spider-Women movie, starring her, Silk, and Gwen.
@TheFrenchiestFry Sort of. New Avengers ran for awhile with the same line up (mostly, they added Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel and lost Ronin and Iron Fist). They still had a 10 year run with nearly the same teammates, which is pretty dang long IMO. And everyone on that team has been part of various later teams as well.
As for Kamala, she was aligned with the Avengers from the All-New All-Different reboot through to the events of Civil War II. Also, Spider-Man was on the team during that period as well, and Parker Industries acted as the headquarters for the team. Again, it's not that long in the grand scheme of things, but it's a good chunk of her short existence.
