Red Dead 2 is definitely a 2 disc game in the west.

My local supermarket had copies on the shelves (that they weren't allowed to sell until 26th) so I went and looked at the box.

Embargo lifts at midday today (BST). Excited to see how well it does. I wonder if it'll be another one of those 97% on metacritic games.

Never even played the first or really seen much of it outside of the fsct that it's an old western setting, but even I find myself caught up in the hype for this one's launch. Wonder if I should dive in with everyone else

I won't, on the grounds that I am a hipster, and more importantly I don't care for games that emphasize realism. It's been a point of contention I've had with most of Rockstar's games, though. I'm sure it's technically impressive, but it's just not my style. If it took place on Mars, I would be all over it.

@PikPi

Luckily because it's a prequel, you don't need to have played the first at all.

It's not far from being just the Witcher but with guns to be honest. Everything is RPGish now.

Ralizah

@PikPi Might as well. It's a Rockstar game, which means the price will be fairly high well into the foreseeable future.

That Digital Foundry video coming out so early is incredibly helpful. For those of us who have to decide between base PS4 and base Xbone, it's good to know which is better.

(It's the PS4. Similar framerate performance but higher resolution on PS4)

@Tsurii

30 fps constant out in the wilderness. Drops to 26-27fps in some of the big town environments.
That's the base Xbone and PS4.

You obviously would care about resolution if the difference was huge. If PS4 was 1080 and Xbone was 640, that'd be incredibly noticeable.
I think they said Xbone was around 900p though, and PS4 is 1080p.

Ralizah

@Tsurii Drops to low-to-mid 20's in the busier environments. Otherwise, it looks like it's sticking around 30.

I haven’t bought a day 1 game since Xenoblade Chronicles (and what a disappointment that was). Cannot wait to throw myself into this one. Not watched any trailers for it, ever. Sounds like there is incredible variety in the landscape.

@Dezzy Even if the game never actually released it would be 97% at metacritic. I'm hyped for the game, but this is one game that sells, and reviews, based on hype, belief, and fairy dust alone, reality be darned. The beauty of the 2k marketing budget, must like Sony and Nintendo games.

@Ralizah Bloodborne. You know, I tried it again yesterday. I gave it one more try. I gave it 20 more tries. I still don't get it. It's just boring. I did the sickroom. I have no weapon. I don't know where I might find a weapon. Maybe there's one in the room. I smashed stuff, broke stuff, no weapon. So I try to wail on the wolf with my fists. My newfound DS skills are handy, I did much better. But eventually he got me. I mean it takes like 100 hits with fists to actually get him. I can't dodge that often and keep stamina up. So I spawn in the dream. There's the doll. There's no old guy in a wheelchair still. So I get my sword from a ghost on the ground because reasons....I pick the SwitchAx...err....hunters axe again. I take him out fast. I go outside, up the ladder to the right, get the lantern, and it's that same cursed area. I felt motivated to take out the large monster with the axe in the alley this time. I missed the switch to the gate because it blends in with the scenery. After 15 tries or so I finally stumble onto the switch. After those 15 tries I finally take the large monster out. I get seemingly nothing of value for it. No new pathway, just a "soul" or whatever they are here. So it takes me back down the long road with the zombies in fedoras and torches.....I can deal with the passing mob. I always get shot by the one hiding behind the coach. Then I get to the big mob standing by the bonfire. A few of them peel off but there's still too many remaining to safely get past. And too many to really take on at this point in the game, particularly with snipers on the upper railing. I do this a dozen or two times and get nowhere. If I try to dodge I run out of stamina too much. If I swing wildly they get me from behind. I have no shield. After a time I realize "this is the most boring game I've ever played" and returned to Dark Souls 1 on Switch. (Where I made zero progress also, got frustratingly killed by an ambush without finding bonfires in Undead Burg. But somehow was never bored to tears like with Bloodborne. Something about it just doesn't click. It's a worse Dark Souls.

I'm not sure why I'm excited for Sekiro. It's probably also just Dark Souls: Japan. And yet something about that one intrigues me. I just can't tell if it's just a Souls-ified Tsushima.

@CanisWolfred I kind of like everything, realism, non realism ,etc, I'm cool with it. Mostly I like unique environments and experiences. Westerns haven't been overdone since 1950's television. It's a dead breed. So a major title in the Western theme is really refreshing to me. Specifically I like the idea of time travel and stepping into other's shoes for experience I'd never see in real life. Time travel back to the old west is interesting, to see, kind of "personally" what it's like. So historical settings I like realistic. Modern...eh...only if it's something different, like Steep or something that shows you life as a Snowboarder (that can clip through objects. )

@Dezzy I hadn't realized it's a prequel. I was planning on playing an hour of 1 today to prep me for tomorrow (never played 1.) But maybe that will spoil the thrill of tomorrow's if so?

I'm kinda confused by push square's review of the new spiderman dlc. I get that the combat got a bit damage spongey but the reviewer seemed mad that its more spiderman gameplay for the spiderman game. DLC shouldn't be radically different (otherwise it should be an expansion) or do I just have the PC mindset on how this works? I don't buy a lot of dlc so I'm not sure. I expect DLC to be more time enjoying the gameplay/story aside of the main game. However I dont expect a crazy new mix up.

@Ryu_Niiyama DLC Pack 1 is out already? Awesome (I have the deluxe edition with the pass so I'm just holding off to really play until the whole game is there.) I do agree the damage sponge enemies get old. But yeah, DLC with more story is just what you want....why wouldn't it be different, it's not Torna....

Octane

@Ryu_Niiyama Well, in all fairness, 5/10 is ''Average'' according to NLife's and PushSquare's review policy. I definitely understand where he's coming from. The take home message is that it's more of the same, some people won't like it. To be fair, whilst I'm having a lot of fun with Spider-Man, I mean, it's probably my second favourite game if we're not counting the SOTC remake this year, I'm not sure I'd be in for more of the same. The game's already pretty standard open world fair, a lot of repetition. Now, I do think that the gameplay makes up for that, but it's a bit disappointing to see that the DLC doesn't try something new. On the other hand, if you want more Spider-Man, it's there.

Octane

Ryu_Niiyama

@Octane Average suggests that the gameplay itself is average...if it matches the base game and isn't worse it should match the base game score. If it had been folded into game on day one it wouldn't be detracted. It doesn't make sense to score DLC being similar to the base game as a detriment. (I'm not one of those 7 or else it's trash people, but the rating doesn't make sense in this context imo).

Honestly unless it's coming to PC I ain't getting Red Dead Redemption 2 at all. And besides I've got other games to play, so no thanks Rockstar.
