Nickelodeon Splat Pack Revives Multiple SNES Titles In One Retro Collection

Aaahhh!!! Real Monsters SNES is the only one that truly has my attention. One of two videogames (the other being Kirby Super Star) that have the honor of being the first ever videogames I played in my life.
I consider it a good licensed game, it at least feels like a game, just a very hard one.
The Genesis version will be a new game for me.

Sorry, as much as I love Rocko's Modern Life, its game is just bad. Maybe if it were Rocko going about and beating the s*** out of anyone in his way to save Spunky from Conglom-o (a platformer beat 'em up if you will. Rocko can already punch in the game, and do a tail swipe) instead of tedious escort mission after escort mission.

I have no comments on GUTS, never played it.

Still, even with the prospect of one of my first ever videogame, I cannot justify getting it physically with the selection of games it is attached to. Let alone for the asking price, I'd rather use it to get the Special Edition of Metroid Prime 4...if it comes to the US.

Hopefully they're not done announcing games for it... would love to play Ren & Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention again

I remember playing Rocko on the SNES and Real Monsters on Genesis. Not on the collection but those Ren and Stimpy games on SNES were awful. I did like the Genesis game though.

@SalvorHardin : LRG previously released a glorified ROM dump of Shantae on Game Boy Color on a Switch cart.

Nothing else. Not a collection. Just a single GBC game.

And instead of bundling it with the port of the DSiWare sequel Risky's Revenge (which released alongside it), they issued a separate cartridge for that too. Complete with individual, overpriced collector's editions.

But where's Rocky and Bullwinkle? I remember watching them on Nickelodeon as a kid. The show use to aired right after UnderDog (who sadly never had a videogame in this lifetime) or Aaahh! Real Monsters I think.

Seeing as the name Nickelodeon only became a thing in my country well into the new millenium, it surprises me they were around during the 16-days.

They should call it The Nickelodeon Afternoon Collection. 😬

I don't care if it takes under an hour to beat. It is the bomb. There were so many R+S games on the SNES, most bad, but this Mega Drive one was just the best. Heavy Co-op emphasis. Loved playing with my brother. Would be tempted if they did an update and it got added.

Seriously, why was this the only Ren and Stimpy game that thought about 2-player?

Though, as others have pointed out, there were many many Nick toon games in the 16 bit/32 bit era. The Gameboy colour saw a lot too, I think. I don't know how the rights work...but surely they own them? Feels like there are a few more they could easily add to this.

No where does it say what's on the VHS.

@Serpenterror R&B were on Nick, but they weren't Nick IP. The shows Nick can truly call it's own were pretty much made at and after Double Dare. Bullwinkle was a 60s cartoon.

I still want the Animaniacs and Tiny Toons collections. Now that WB has allowed the Mortal Kombat collection to happen, perhaps they're now more willing to lend out their IPs.

@HammerGalladeBro Rocko is a decent game for what it is, a puzzle-platformer. Or "escort mission" as you call it, that's exactly what genre of game it was.
It's just that, it only had about a rental's worth of content. I owned the game as a kid, and even I felt bad that I got my parents to pay full price for it.

I hadn't played GUTS much, but I recall it was definitely a "read the manual" sports game.
One bad sign is that the platforming stages used Y to jump and B to run. You can tell they hadn't played any other SNES platformers with those controls.

@Mana_Knight On the SNES and Genesis, I think these and the Ren & Stimpy games were the only Nickelodeon games.
The Rugrats and Doug games didn't come out until the 1998 revival run of Rugrats (which was around the time Disney got ownership of Doug).
I remember because I had grown up on watching reruns of the 1991 run of Rugrats.

@Uncle_Franklin It was a puzzle platform, or as the first post called it, "escort mission" game.
I thought it was an alright game, just way too short. Which still puts it far above most SNES license games.

Think the Gameboy colour/GBA/PSX was were it really started to churn out. Spongebob games, Fairly Odd Parents, Rugrats, Doug etc.

Feels like they could have thrown something in from there!

@Misima I think Animaniacs was the last licensed cartoon Nickelodeon ran reruns of, in the early 2000s. I think after that, it seemed like Nick had moved to airing its original content only.

I do remember for a time in the '90s, they ran the 1960s Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon (with the opening edited to have Nick logos throughout) before briefly running the '80s Alvin series.

$35 for these three? Man, LGR even beat Nintendo for the awfulness of their pricing.

@Daniel36 I mean surely you've heard of SpongeBob?? That started before the new millennium. Rugrats had been going so long it had a movie out before the new millennium.

@GoproGO I had to look it up. Spongebob began airing in my country in 2002, but not yet on a Nickelodeon channel. So while I may have had the chance to see the logo in the cartoon, it wouldn't be shown full screen. So I wouldn't have known Spongebob to be a Nickelodeon affair. Same with Rugrats, which was definitely aired in our country mid-90s, but not on a dedicated channel, instead on our BBC-equivalent channels.

The Nickelodeon channel has a very confusing timeline here, with digital channels and timeslots galore.

Best I could find was that I personally would have only gotten into easy contact with it around 2015. Before that it was either on small timeslots on niche channels, or not even available to me through my provider of coice.

I am sure I would've heard the name by then though, as I was online a lot, so I guess I would've known the name and its associated brands through online exposure, but definitely not as a mainstay in our household.

Oh wow, I remember having that GUTS game back in the day. I enjoyed it. I can’t say I ever would have imagined to see it re-released in in modern day.

If there were more games, the $35 price could be worth it.

I wonder why at least some ren and stimpy games didn’t make it. There were quite a few. Veediots, time warp, and stumps invention I remember liking pretty well and the rewind feature would make some of these beatable. They could do a collection of just ten and stumps honestly. There’s so many if they include even the gameboy and game gear games.

Man, I remember the GUTS game being a very frustrating rental as a kid. Limited instructions, janky controls, unclear objectives... weird that I still kind of miss those days. You really grew to appreciate the rental stores that would list (with varying accuracy) some controls on the back of the box in an attempt to help the confused children of the area, haha.

If I were to take a wild guess, Ren and Stimpy isn’t included because either Nickelodeon doesn’t have the rights anymore or they don’t want the flack from the sexual abuse allegations to resurface from creator Michael John Kricfalusi (John K).

If you can, look up the Target Exclusive versions of Stranger Things seasons 1 and 2.

Those disks came in cases that looked like VHS tapes.

Yeah they've been around for a long time. Interesting that it wasn't in your country until the 2000's. I remember watching Nickelodeon as a kid in the very early 1980's, of course I am in the U.S. too.

@KingMike Oh, trust me I did own Rocko back in the day, a $4 used game from Babagge's (before they became Gamestop), I don't think I ever made it past Level 2.

In its defense, back then I didn't see it as a puzzle platformer. With that in mind, I'm willing to give it another chance, especially with the Rewind function. Though that will be when there's a sale on the digital version, I just hope it's available for more than 10 months.

They're actually using the Mighty Rabbit logo again, which is what Josh's development company was called and LRG originally founded as a tax shelter to publish the games mostly as gag gifts.

@GamerGrandpa Yeah, the Netherlands did its own thing, I guess... especially back then. Nowadays we get easy access to everythimg with Netflix, Prime, you name it, and digital tv gives us a few international channels too, but back then we didn't have that many channels, so we got whatever was probably the cheapest or most promising programs to air. We did have Cartoon Network in the 90s, surprisingly enough.

@GoproGO Spongebob only debuted about half a year before the millennium, in the US (May 1999, I think.) That just barely counts as '90s.

Ren & Stimpy is yes, either separate license, or a desire to not be associated with the creator. (I recall Spike TV ran an "adult" version of the cartoon which got pulled REALLY fast in the 2000s. I've heard it described as "Nickelodeon censored it too much, Spike didn't censor it enough." among fan reactions to the initial airing.)

This will complement the Carmageddon Splat Pack rather well.

This is really cool! Didn't even know there was a Rocko's Modern Life game, but it's a great show, so I'm curious to check it out. I hope this is just the beginning of classic Nickelodeon games getting re-released on modern consoles. Can we get a NickToons Unite collection next? The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie? Fairly OddParents: Breaking Da Rules and Shadow Showdown? Jimmy Neutron: The Movie game and Attack of the Twonkies? I think there was a Danny Phantom game on GBA, which I never played. Bring that over as well!

This is making me wish we could get a port of ed edd n eddy the misedventures. Ed edd n eddy is my favorite cartoon and I remember enjoying the game as a kid.

I think i played more Disney and Looney Toons games when I was younger. I played Ren and Stimpy on Sega and that game was fun. If it gets included I might pick it up but right now it does nothing for me.

I highly recommend checking out the YouTube channel poparena and his series called knick nacks. He covers the history of every single show on Nickelodeon in chronological order of first premier date. It is amazing.

@ChromaticDracula I think they still own the rights, but are kind of squeamish on it. After "Quiet on Set" was released, Nickelodeon is playing a hard game of PR. Also, the only good Ren and Stimpy game was published by Sega.

I love how they put in XBox as well these days. Every physical XBox game counts, since it has lesser releases.

The Rocko’s Modern Life game is really frustrating. The G.U.T.S game is notoriously terrible. Ahhh! Real Monsters mediocre if you’re being generous. Not a terribly impressive collection unless you have some personal history with these games.

@Greatluigi I would like it if they had some legal (or even semi decent illegal) way to watch the series.

I am remembering that Ben Heck gave a story of how he worked at GameStop (or one of the stores they bought out) in the '90s and had one kid call in every day asking for Aaahh!! Real Monsters. Then he didn't know it was a real game (and I'll guess he was a little too old to have been a Nick watcher to know of the cartoon) so it became a joke between him and his friends.

I always like seeing these nostalgia collections. It's more about the memories than the games themselves. It's also a few more older games being accessible for those that enjoy seeing what was available in the 90s.

Personally though, this is a rough and expensive collection of bad BlockBuster rentals. I'm looking at 3 ruined childhood weekends right here, lol.

@MTMike87 I agree! I have some of these nostalgic “memory” games too (plenty, in fact across many consoles) but I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone who didn’t have them as a kid.

I really miss these sort of cartoons, the likes of Doug etc too. Cartoons seemed to respect the intelligence of children more back then and in doing so appeal to teenagers and older folks as well.
Does anyone remember when Cartoon Network used to air a bunch of pilots and you could vote which was the best and then it would be turned into a series? I'll never forget that Cow and Chicken pilot, which won obviously, it was insane. The series never quite got to that peak again though.
