To clarify, I will not put in links regarding the leaked footages of the game here. If you still wish to take the gamble and see for yourself on how awful its gonna be, Google or look up on the youtube videos online.
Basically following the suppose indefinite delay, Sony and Naughty Dog literally played with fire, and they got burned for it big time. Dates back to the reports of Naughty Dog's working condition on enforcing harsh crunch time, and going as far to not provide their employees with fair payment in case their work wasn't properly done. And that's when the camel finally broke its back. Supposively, one of the ND's unnamed workers relented back by posting footages of the gameplay, and important plot points online. Following this, Sony responded by putting its release on June 19th, 2020.
In all honesty, I've been a fan of Naughty Dog since the Crash Bandicoot games they released back in the mid 90s, but wow they deserved to be put in this hot water situation.
@TheAwesomeBowser The last thing I want is to bring this on the Pushsquare site without taking the risk of it getting locked or having the comments removed because somebody will purposely add in the link of the leaks. I mean, have you seen the subrredit of TLOU? Its basically on indefinite lockdown till the game's release.
Wow. Neil Druckmann literally treated their staffs like garbage, and didn't even bother giving them the bonus pay regardless of it being released or not. And to make matters worse: only he and other ND vets got their pay, ticking off the majority of their employees.
@Dezzy Still, that doesn't excuse Naughty Dog doing crunch work on their employees. And even if so, then why Sony of all people suddenly announced a release date following the supposed leaks.
I don't think there's any way we can know the details of that from the outside. Just cos some media reports say it, you still don't know exactly what's happening.
Did those employees voluntarily agree to it when they took the job? Are they getting paid overtime for it? Do they get a bonus that's tied to the profit the game makes? etc etc.
These are all important issues you'd need to understand if you're gonna criticize a company for something like that.
@Dezzy At the end of the day, the leaks have definitely damaged sales for the game. While I doubt its gonna flop, but for sure it'll hurt.
It didn't stop EA's Battlefield which they literally said "Don't like it, don't buy it." garbage. And despite making supposively over 7 million, EA still clarified it as a "Flop."
Only a minority of the audience for a game like this (and Battlefield) actually follow the news of these kinds of issues.
Everyone else makes their buying decisions based on other factors, like whether the game is part of an on-going series they've played before. Or whether their friends buy it. Or whether they like the genre. Things like that. TLOU2 will sell quite a few million copies simply because it's the sequel to a game nearly everyone loved.
Resident Evil 6 sold like 6 million copies, even though pretty much everyone thought it was the worst Resident Evil game. It's because of that series loyalty.
@RainmakerF5 Big publishers generally call anything that doesn't sell insanely well a "flop" like Square Enix said the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy were "flops". That's a reason why big publishers are turning more to subscription services, so that they can talk to investors about how massively successful the subscription service is instead of [insert game] didn't sell "particularly well".
@BruceCM I think that is fairly standard practice. I don't recall Nintendo identifying the people who leak the Pokemon games whenever they come out for example.
@BruceCM Yeah it is. Of course, there's a difference between crunch and crunch. Different standard for different development teams. But I believe that ND is quite open about the fact that they're willing to work over hours to get something done in time. So I also believe that most people know what they're signing up for. But honest, I don't really know. All we can go by is a couple of Reddit posts and Tweets from Schreier.
