Here we can talk about anything mobile. Games, apps, or even the devices themselves!

Personally, I just got a Galaxy Tab 3, and I'm really enjoying it so far. My only gripe (and it's a small one), is that you can't delete your browser history all at once (instead, you have to delete pages one by one). Other than that though, everything has been fantastic

As for what I've downloaded so far:

Godzilla: Smash 3 (game) - Based on the new film, and it's a pretty fun game. Features turn based battles, and your actions depend on chaining together combos in a puzzle grid on the bottom half of the screen (offers a surprisingly strategic experience). The graphics & effects ooze quality to boot. The only downside is that it really seems to push the "Pay to Win" element, which is a shame. I'm only on level 17 (with 35 in total in the first city), and man has the difficulty really spiked. I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to continue by simply grinding

Tank Hero (game) - This is a simple tank game. It has simple (though clean) graphics, and a simple premise, but it does exactly what says it was going to do, so there's no fault to be found here. It won't win any rewards (and it's not particularly memorable), but it's been a pretty fun time everytime I boot it up (would probably do well as a $2 or $3 game on 3DS eShop, seems like a perfect fit).

NHK World TV (app) - If you're interested in Japanese culture, this is a great app. Many interesting programs like Tokyo Eye, Japanology Plus, Journeys in Japan, and many more. Also has news at the top of the hour.

Summoner's War: Sky Arena (game) - Wow, the fact that this game is free boggles my mind. I haven't played it much, but my goodness this game oozes quality, and it's a really fun RPG. My friend (who's been coming over every night this past week) has been playing it on his phone for hours at a time when he comes over, so it doesn't seem to push "IAP's" whatsoever, which I find to be pleasantly surprising. Took forever to install though, lol.

BTW, I know we've had threads like this before (and they don't seem to last long, unfortunately), but it's been a few months since the last one, so I figured we could give it another go.

I've got the nexus 7-2013 model too. There's a good stash of games on it because I'll snap up the pay stuff when it drops to free for a day or a dollar or two.

There's a couple full blown Lego Star Wars games on there I'm told are great, loaded but haven't tried them yet from the other day. SNK has great conversions of some of their hot fighters/shooters/metal slug games but they're kind of ratty without a controller and the same can be said of the Sega conversions too. Assassins Creed Pirates is pretty, much to do, but slow to advance without paying and the combat mechanics are a little repetitive/thin. I can't recommend more highly Pinball Arcade but that's anywhere.

Actually, I could recommend a bunch of iPad apps:

Bug Princess is a Cave bullet hell shmup....do I need to say more?

Puzzle And Dragon is a pretty fun Bejeweled clone with RPG and collect 'em all elements. It's F2P and gets pretty aggressive with them mid way through the game, but when its fun, it's practically crack in video game form.

Age of Zombies is a top-down shooter with plenty of personality and humor. Not a lot of content, but achievements and challenges will keep you busy for a while after you beat the main game.

Jetpack Joyride is an endless runner/shmup from the developers of AoZ. It's pretty fun if you're into beating your high score. If you liked the humor in AoZ, you'll like it here, too.

Kid Tripp is easily the best platformer I've played on a tablet. Very challenging, but in an addictive way.

Shin Megami Tensei is a dungeon crawling JRPG that was the originator to a great franchise, and boy did they start out with a bang! If you're looking for a good story in your JRPG, this is definitely a good place to look.

Ascension: Chronicles of the Godslayer is a deck building card game, and easily one of the best card games I've ever played in video game form. The natue of it means that every game offers something a little different. If you're tired of TCGs, or just looking for something a little different, I highly recommend it. Each expansion seems to add another layer to the game, too.

Hearthstone is not in the same league as Ascension, but it's pretty addicting in its own right. It's a free to play game that gets it right, too, so I highly recommend trying it out.

D&D: Lords of Waterdeep is a complex board game. I can't really get into the specifics, since I haven't played enough yet, but I'll definitely say more once I've gotten more into it. At the very least it's fun, even when I haven't gotten the hang of it.

Fates Forever is basically a MOBA that's a lot like League of Legends. It's pretty damn fun, too, though it could use more content out of the gate - you basically gotta unlock most of the characters. Thankfully there's a decent bot mode, which to me makes all the difference. New players get a chance to learn the game, while veterans can test out new characters and practice certain strategies in a safe environment. The bots don't seem that dumb to me so far, either. If you're looking to get into MOBAs, this might be the best place to start.

Well, I've had my tablet for a little over a week now, and have really gotten into a comfortable groove with it.

Mostly been using it to read manga & use the apps I mentioned in the original post (except Tank Hero, which I've kind of stopped playing).

I'm almost done with the Tokyo levels in Godzilla: Smash 3, so I'll probably mention it here when (if) I do complete it.

BTW, it gets a little warm when running the more graphically intensive games, and I hear that's normal?

Yay! Just cleared the final Tokyo stage in Godzilla: Smash 3 (and I didn't even have to resort to IAP's)! That final battle with the flying MUTO really came down to the wire (I had such a small sliver of health left that I couldn't even see it). Well, time to start smashing my way through San Francisco!

@Undead_terror, thanks for the invite, but I'm personally not one for zombies. Hope you have fun, though.

BTW, are there any big Japanese mobile game developers (other than the console developers who have dipped into the pool)?

There seems to be a few Korean companies that are quite prevalent in the Google Play Store (such as Gamevil & Com2Us), but no Japanese developers have that kind of presence, from what I've noticed.

Never mind, I found the answer to my own question. There's a company called Colopl that has some pretty good games.

Staircase Sprinter - An endless runner with a very simple & clean art design, that gets pretty difficult (think similar in feel to DSiWare's 10 Second Run). The key in this one however, is that you can't jump or duck. Rather, it takes a page from the Shift playbook, and by tapping you warp between the light & dark parts of the screen to dodge obstacles. It's free, with no IAP's, and unintrusive advertising.

Salvo Saga - Wow, this game has left a wonderful first impression! It's a shump with a very awesome neon look (the backgrounds are absolutely stunning, and everything has ran really smooth so far). You control your ship by dragging it across the screen, and as long as you're touching the screen, it automatically fires forward (you also have a button that fires a special bomb that clears all enemies on screen, but you only get three a day). As you go along, enemies drop in-game currency that can be spent on upgrades to your ship. It does have IAP's, but they seem to be pretty tame. You can opt to buy extra bombs & lives if you run out, and don't want to wait for them to "recharge", but it doesn't appear they're necessary whatsoever.

For some reason, Summoners War: Sky Arena stopped working for me, so I had to get rid of it.

On the upside, I decided to get Quiz RPG: Legend of Mystic Wiz (which intrigued me after seeing it on Imagine-Nation). It's a card collecting RPG, and battles take place in traditional turn based fashion, but when it's your turn, you have to correctly answer a multiple choice question in order to attack.

You have a choice of four multiple choice questions to choose from, categories ranging from History, Science, Geography, Sports, Lifestyle, or Entertainment.

Cards come in three affinities (with a rock-paper-scissors system), that are fire, water, & thunder. The questions too are affiliated with an affinity, and when answered correctly, have your cards with the same affinity take action (there are questions that are multiple affinity, but they're harder).

I was given a 7 Inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 last year for Christmas and I use it mainly for games. The main games I play on it, are Plants Vs Zombies 2, Jetpack Joyride and Zombie Frontier 2. I also have Angry Birds, Flow Free Bridges, My Talking Tom, Plague Inc and Flappy Turd. But I rarely/never play them these days.

I've had a Samsung Galaxy S4 for a while now. It was my first contract phone. I don't use it for games though, as games can fill up it's memory and drain the battery fast. Instead, I have quite a lot of apps which come in handy most days. Apps like the news, weather, online banking, currency converter, shopping etc.

More recently I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 to accompany a professional quad-copter I bought. It's sole purpose is to run the app which links up to the quad-copter, known as the Phantom 2 Vision Plus and give me a first person view through it's camera, along with other very important features. It was a little costly, considering it's only used once or twice a month. But at least it should last.

I just have my Galaxy S4 and I don't use it for games much. I do on occasion play some Crazy Taxi and it's a fairly good port of it. Any controls on a phone/tablet always feel like they are not anywhere near as good as PC or console but I did also play some World of Tanks on my other half's 5c and it was pretty good.

Been on a bit of a sports kick.

MLB.com Home Run Derby 2014 - By far the best FTP game I've ever played. The actual Home Run Derby mode costs one "Ticket" to play (you start out with 5, and they recharge for free after two hours, or immediately after paying). However, it also has an Arcade mode that is just as fun, and can be played an UNLIMITED number of times, all for free (in this mode, you try to hit as many home runs as possible in one minute, with each home run adding an extra 5 seconds to the clock to prolong game time, and there are also various "Challenges" to tackle here). In both Home Run Derby & Arcade mode, you earn two different kinds of in game currency called "Coins" & "MLBucks", which can be used to purchase better equipment & extra players (of course you can spend real money on these things as well, but it's completely within reason to do it all in-game). Graphically the game looks pretty amazing (players are easily recognizable), and the simple one touch swing mechanic works very intuitively.

Madden 15 Mobile - This, works surprisingly well, as they've optimized it perfectly for mobile controls. On offense, you move with a virtual joystick (which does admittedly take a bit of practice, although they also have an "Auto Run" option), and you throw the ball to other players simply by touching them (tapping them will lob the ball to them, while keeping your finger on them for just a bit longer sends it to them fast). To kick the ball, you simply flick your finger up the screen. On defense, you tap any player you want to control (and you can tap the screen anywhere with two fingers to automatically take control of the player closest to the ball). You tackle opposing players by tapping the sole "Action Button" (which Jukes while playing offense), and you block (and potentially intercept) passes simply by flicking up on the screen when prompted (this will only appear if you have a player close in proximity to the player trying to catch the ball). Also, it's conscious of it's mobile nature, as each quarter is only 1 minute long (which works quite well). The controls may sound a bit complicated, but let me assure you, you'll never need any more than two fingers on the screen at any one time (one for movement, and the other for all "actions", which never overlap). Graphically it looks pretty good to boot. It's also pretty decent with it's FTP model, though not as good as the aforementioned baseball game (playing games eats up "Stamina", which will recharge overtime for free, but can be replenished immediately for a fee. It actually isn't too strict on "Stamina" however, and the biggest pressure to spend real world cash comes when trying to obtain your favorite players, as your initial team is a randomly selected mishmash of players from all over the league, and they are ludicrously expensive trying to obtain them with just in-game currency).

Time for a bit of a bump, I supose.

If you're looking into some free experiences that don't force IAP's on you, be sure to check out games developed by Colopl & Warner Brothers Interactive (or Warner Brothers International, I can't remember which one it is).

Notable games I've played from them...

Warner Brothers:

  • Godzilla: Strike Zone - A free game with no IAP's whatsoever, and with high production values. It's short, with only 3 missions, but it does contain feature a complete adventure in that short time. Playing in first person view, you have to safely traverse the destroyed streets of LA & rescue trapped civilians.
  • Gravity: Don't Let Go - They apply the same strategy here. A short, but free, game with high production values. Based on the Gravity film, this once again features 3 missions, with a complete story arc. This one has a multiplayer aspect as well, though I haven't tried it out.
  • I haven't tried them out yet, but apparently they've given the same treatment to games based off of Edge of Tomorrow, 300: Rise of an Empire, and Pacific Rim as well.

Colopl:

  • Quiz RPG: the Legend of Mystic Wiz - I detailed it more extensively back in post 14. Essentially it's an RPG where you attack by answering multiple choice trivia questions during your turn. Your 5 member party is made up of "trading cards" you obtain while playing the game. It does have a story to work your way through, as well as time limited sidequests, and tournaments against other players. I haven't played it in awhile, but I played it for two or three weeks heavily, getting to the 4th city (there are only 5), without having to pay a cent.
  • Salvo Saga HD - Detailed more in depth in post 13. Cool little Shmup with a vibrant neon artsyle. It has ten levels in total, and 26 difficuly levels (you earn upgrades to your ship the further you get into the game, keeping everything pretty level). I've beat it on the first ten difficulty levels, and only stopped because I figured I've played through it enough. You start out with 5 lives, and they only take 5 minutes each to recharge if you die, so it doesn't limit you nearly as much as other FTP games (the same for pretty much any Colopl game I've played so far, TBH).
  • Downstair Sprinter - Completely free, with no IAP's whatsoever. An Endless runner with a very polished & clean presentation, online leaderboards, and a unique hook (detailed in post 13).
  • Popcork! - A charming shooting gallery set up in a Japanese festival setting. There are over 100 different prizes to win (by knocking them down), most of them uniquely Japanese (such as Sushi, Sake, Wall Scrolls, Shogi pieces, etc.). It has brightly colored fully 3D graphics, and even a gallery where you can view your collected prizes (with short descriptions of each). You start out with 5 coins (which give you five shots each), and they each regenerate after 10 minutes while the game is running, or 1 hour while it's not. You can still rack up long periods of playtime as long as you manage to keep winning stuff (you gain a shot if you knock something down, essentially making that last shot a free one, and can even earn extra shots if you knock something down with the occasional bonus weapon, which doesn't detract from your normal shot count).

Has anyone played Simogo's new game? I absolutely love Beat Sneak Bandit, Year Walk and Device 6, and just got this month's Edge where they've given The Sailor's Dream a 9. I checked Metacritic however and its currently at 78 which is way, way down on Simogo's other stuff.

I have never heard of him before, but I think I'll check some of his stuff out. Thanks for the heads up. I've heard good things from...the very few mobile-game players I still interact with.

Does anyone know if there's a Hanafuda game on the Google Play store that has a tutorial?

I've found a few free apps, but none of them mentioned whether or not they had tutorials (other than one, which mentioned they'd add one eventually).

So, when I woke up this morning I noticed Hearthstone is now on Google Play (Android)!

Reviews seem to say it's currently a little slow (more than likely issues that'll be worked out in future patches), but it seems to be playable on a wide variety of tablets (even one said it was perfectly playable on their Tab 3, so I'll be sure to try it out later).
