Hey guys. So I need some help here with evaluating my level. I wanted to make a very difficult level that's still "fair", but when it comes this level of difficulty I'm just not sure. If anyone here is an expert platformer or just pretty good, do you think you could try this level and see if there's anything you think is "unfair"?

I played your level and commented. If you set out to make a very difficult level you didn't succeed. It is moderately challenging, but nowhere near very difficult. It is good and fair though, so you did succeed at the most important elements.

@MasterWario: I'm going to take a break from it for a few minutes,I keep getting killed at the same part but it's down to my own failings rather than bad level design. It's an excellently made level in fact,I love how it really picks up temp as it goes on but maybe there is just one too many cannons haha.I'm determined to beat it and I will.

@GAMEBOYPOCKET: I'll give yours a go in a bit.I wouldn't be too concerned about the rage quitters. If they're going to quit after one Goomba they're not the ones you are wanting ratings and comments from anyway.I follow a few from here who I know make good levels,I play them all,I star them and leave comments and they do the same with mine.Knowing those guys and girls who understand good level design are playing and enjoying my levels is more than enough for me.

@SuperWiiU: @OorWullie: Thanks very much guys! I appreciate it! I didn't want to make it insane, but from the feedback from the two of you it seems I have the difficulty about what I was going for, surprisingly a bit easier. Sounds like my design choices were ok too; was a bit worried about that. Sure helps me out a lot.

@Rafx Ha ha, by all means use it; glad you liked it.

@GAMEBOYPOCKET: It's really difficult to get plays for levels in the upper 50% of difficulty for a few reasons. Two that come to me are:
1. The majority of players cannot (regardless of whether they will not) beat those levels
2. When you make difficult levels people start to get pickier. For example, I can't stand Hammer Bros., they are the bane of my existence; if I'm playing a really difficult level based around Hammer Bros. I will not finish the level, because not only will it take me forever (probably), but mostly because it's just not fun for me to die to Hammer Bros. 10 or even 5 times in a row.

I strongly advise everybody to use the ranking feature in NintendoLife. It is a very nice feature that we can share our levels here but the real advantage would be that we can distinguish great and bad levels. After playing a level of a user, you should rank it from 1 to 5 stars.

For example, a lot of people here played the levels of @SuperWiiU. But nobody gave a ranking afterwards. Now I don't know which of his levels I should play

(And if you weren't able to finish the level, you should use the comment button here in NintendoLife and tell the problem.)

I guess it's time I mention then, since you bring it up, my rating system:
5 stars: I absolutely adored your level or it was near perfectly refined such that nothing was poor in any way.
4 stars: Well designed, well polished. Sometimes I may give 4 stars if there was a lot of effort put into the level and it doesn't quite deserve 3.
3 stars: Good level but some design choices upset me, or a level that is, generally, average/average effort.
I will not rate a level if I feel it deserves below 3 stars, unless it's already rated higher than I think it should be. My reason being is people may put a lot of effort into a level and it's just, not good. I can like a level without it being good and from experience it is awful to put a lot of effort towards something just to get a bad impression from other people. I know this means people won't know if their level is poor in a strict sense, but I feel constructive criticism is better. That being said, if you want me to rate your levels lower if I think they are sub-par I can do that.

And lastly, sometimes I don't know what to rate people's levels. So I don't.

I try to rate all the levels I play that people post here. The embed is perfect since I look up the levels on the forum in the first place.

I totally agree and therefore you could use the commentary function and shortly tell what bugs you.
(In Miiverse this is not possible since every comment will reward the level with a star.)
Everybody wants to improve his levels and criticism at the right place should be perfect for that.

Okay, that probably is the problem. Many levels are a matter of taste and it is hard to rate that.

@GAMEBOYPOCKET
You definitely have more than enough Goomba. I was just just having some fun trying to get as far as I could with the same one. This game seems kinda pointless when you have unlimited life's and I don't mind dieing over and over agian. I played a level the other night for almost 2hrs because I get that "ok this time I'm gonna beat it" syndrom. Lol

@99mushrooms: I played your level and I don't think its very fair.

First of all, there is no indication for the player that there will be anything coming out of that pipe in the beginning. You need to show it somehow. Maybe just keep the entrance clear with one block that you need to use a shell to break.

Second, the thwomps up top are super cheap. You can't see them at all, so you have no idea when another one is going to fall, plus you can get hit by them even if you have a helmet due to the moving platforms. This is as far as I made it in this level because I thought it was super cheap and unintuitive. Maybe make the difficulty a bit easier if you're planning on focusing on the puzzles.

Thanks for the feedback! I changed the moving platforms to solid ground. I didn't change the blocks above the tunnel though, I put that coin block there as incentive to break the two in front of it and open the pipe up, there is a small area there and nothing else to do so I think it will get figured out. I made it easier in a couple other parts of the level later also.

Is nobody playing my levels? No offense but I saw a higher rate of feedback in this thread than the other thread. I was hoping to hear something.

These are the two levels I'm most proud of. They are both gimmicky though!

One of the little series I'm working on right now is a Melee Adventure Mode series, and I've gotten three done so far if you'd like to check them out. They are remakes of some of the Super Smash Bros Melee Adventure Mode levels, with some of my own flair added in here and there as well, and slight changes due to the limitations.

Melee Mushroom Kingdom: 7F28-0000-0067-5EFF

Melee Underground Maze: 9A74-0000-0069-5710

Melee Brinstar Escape: 700F-0000-006D-86ED

Also, any suggestions on what Adventure Mode level to make next? I'm working on Race to the Finish from Classic Mode some, but I'm not sure if I like how it's turning out so far.

@TheLobster
The water level was well designed game Machanic wise. Just think it could have been a bit longer and involve more elements. It's a great start.

The mushroom lvl was kinda cool not knowing what I would get next. Was a good showcase for someone like me who hasn't seen a lot of costumes. Good job.

Feel free to give feedback on my level.

Bone Coaster Madness: 2FFD-0000-007A-51B2. This course is made for players with great reflexes. The ride is tough but the victory will be sweet. I also would love some feedback to things I can improve upon seeing as I've just been going in blind for a while now. I would appreciate it! And sorry about the tiny spelling error in the name!

The fact you are reading this proves you are able to have an attention span longer than me. Well done sir or madam!

@Dpishere: Thank you for the wonderful comment on miiverse! It means a lot! A lot of care and thought went into the design of that level, and I appreciate the recognition. Looking forward to trying "Luigi's Spooktacular Rescue"!

@sjmartin: Thanks! The quality on Luigi's Puzzling Mansion was high. I was really impressed. It shows you put a lot of effort into the course.

If I could like your comment on here... or give it a hug, I would. Luigi's Puzzling Mansion became a labor of love for me. From designing the walls and ceilings (breaking up the design elements provided to give texture and variety) to using enemies to fill empty space (even if the player would have zero chance of physically encountering the enemy). My desire was to create a wholly contained experience that was as nice to look at as it was fun to play.

It's always nice to get a star from someone who enjoys your course, but when they take the time to comment on the design or acknowledge the effort put into it... to me, that's worth 20 stars. So, again, thank you. You made my day!
