It was just announced that version 5.0 is the last content updates for the game ARMS. This made me feel really disappointed considering how much the game has been growing with new characters, stages, and modes. But the roster hasn't even reached 15 characters yet. My only question is why was the support for this game cancelled so early? Could it have to do with sales? But the game sold over 1.6 million copies, that seems great for a new IP, especially with the install base of the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo even pushed the competitive side of the game so much it's getting an EVO event in Japan in 2018, so why was the support cancelled so early?
1.6 million is nothing to scoff at but maybe they aren't seeing the numbers that they expected to see? They probably expected the install base to grow as they continued to update but it just didn't. There's not much interest in this game that I've seen. I haven't touched it in months and neither have my friends that bought it. Maybe the player base is dwindling and they feel like it's a waste to continue to support it.
Just because they're no longer adding stuff to the game doesn't mean they're not supporting it... they already mentioned continuing to watch for balance issues, and we're still getting Party Crashes (one is already set for next weekend, featuring Master Mummy and Twintelle).
And if we're talking strictly about competitive communities, they could care less about any modes other than training. All they need is viewership and remaining dedicated. Worked for Melee, an old game that fought tooth and nail for recognition.
@iLikeUrAttitude That's all on the players there. I repeat: earlier Smash games got little to no support from it's parent company in the competitive scene, yet still managed to make a name for themselves (though not a good one for Brawl, due to horrendous balance issues... so there's importance there in keeping a playerbase). Sponsorship helps, but if the players don't care about a game, there won't be a scene, period.
I don't see that they're dropping support for it, they're just not going to add new characters in the near future. As mentioned here, they do still have Party Crashes coming, and they are also planning to continue balance patches. My suspicion is that further additional content is waiting for when they launch their paid online service. Why waste assets by continuing to give them away free when they can use them to add value to their paid service?
Also, if they want to push ARMS as a competitive game it's not that beneficial to keep on adding characters. People need to train with the existing fighters, and adding a new one every month is kind of detrimental to that goal.

Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
ARMS has a fair amount of characters at this point tbh. They could work with that. What the game really needs is for these characters to actually interact with each other, beyond just what Biff says. They keep on putting out lore, but rarely ever do anything with it.
Return on investment has peaked. There will not be much interest after Christmas that makes sense to pour more development resources in to this game. We would all love for more content, but Nintendo isn't running a charity. My guess is that they don't want backlash to charge for unlocking more characters either and it would continue to create development costs to adjust more due to balancing issues later down the line.
Personally, I'd much rather see Nintendo release a plethora of games instead of trying to make a few titles fit the "games as a service" trend, so I think this is good news. Especially since ARMS got a fair enough amount of DLC - and it was all free too!
Whoaaa...
I can imagine Springman / Ribbon Girl / Ninjara / Max Brass / etc will be compete with their Long arms to beat their opponents.
Also, places from ARMS in Mario Kart style ?
Wow...
@Grumblevolcano Why is Mario Kart needed now? Theres no way they're making a sequel and theres enogh content.
Maybe Nintendo is making Mario Kart 9 for Switch, probably the characters from ARMS will be added as playable characters.
And..... they have to sit down very Uncomfort like Link when they ride kart like Go Kart in Mini Size.
