So who's going all Digital with Nintendo's next console?

It's been quite awhile since I bought a physical game. I'll go all digital in the next console if Nintendo lets me. On Switch some games were physical-only, most famously Ring Fit Adventure and Labo. Yeah, I understand that you need special peripherals for those games, but I still would have preferred an option to buy it with a download code rather than a cartridge so that the game itself would be on my account and I could buy a backup ring or whatever separately if I needed a replacement.

@NeonPizza I would be totally up for the next console bringing back Labo in a new fancier way. Between the originals with, as you say, junky peripherals and then the offshoot game Game Builder Garage which was potentially amazing but Nintendo basically forgot about it after two days, it seems like the franchise (franchises?) still have a lot of potential.

As for Ring Fit Adventure, fundamentally it's just an exercise game with a couple cute gamifications built in. Personally I think Nintendo should keep doubling down on the exercise games even if they are mostly aimed for parents who don't necessarily play many normal games. If I could ask for one thing from the next console, I would like some type of improved sensor capability so games like this could track movement better. That and not requiring physical cartridges.

And agree about Mario 3D All-Stars. There have been some other games which got removed from the eshop for various reasons, but Nintendo itself doing it with Mario is just weird. I'm predicting they will re-release it on the next console (maybe in 2025?) but they definitely lost some sales in the years inbetween (and annoyed people) for no reason at all.

Just counted it out. Excluding the "digital only" titles only about 30% of the games I brought on Switch were physical. On the Wii U it was 85%, on 3DS it was 75%. Also I haven't brought a physical copy of a game on Switch since late 2020. For me it just doesn't really make much sense to go for physical copies. They take up space, are less convenient and cost more so really, easy choice

I mean sure, you could argue that the used market is a reason to go physical. And if you're going to play that game then it probably is. But I know personally I'm never going to sell any of my gaming stuff so that means nothing to me. Preservation? I mean sure. But it's not like there's a shortage of people doing that

No, to me the only reason I was still buying physical copies of games at the start of this generation was because the Switch had 32GB of storage and BotW was a 13GB game..... but at the tail end of the generation you can now get a 500GB micro-SD card for less than the price of a new game. So that one reason left disappeared. I don't expect to go back for the next generation. With that said, I still don't think there should be a digital only SKU. There's still a market for physical game sales. And at the very least I'd want it for backwards compatibility

Digital is good except for sharing your games with the kids. When I buy a cartridge, it can be used by the whole family (of course, not at the same time). If Nintendo would allow a family library of games then the digital option would be much better.

The advantages of physical outweigh those of digital for me. Primarily it's just a lot more cost-effective to buy physical - the games themselves are usually cheaper (at least in the UK), you can resell them if you want to, and you don't have to spend as much on SD cards.

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

I assume you mean multiple Switches since you can already do that with multiple accounts on one Switch?

It would be neat if the NSO family plan allowed you to do that over multiple Switches, but there is no real hope for that since Nintendo allows people in totally different households to be on the same family plan.

@Dogorilla reselling is definitely a big difference but getting a large enough SD card is super cheap nowadays, especially since you can archive games temporarily if you own a ton. Plus the next console will have more space. In NA at least, most games go on better sales digitally.... though Nintendo exclusives are obnoxiously sometimes an exception.

@FishyS Indeed I mean with several physical switches.
We are using familly plan for streaming films and for music, so we are used to be able to access those services on different devices and at the same time. We have also the familly Nintendo Online plan. It is unfortunate that we cannot buy a digital game once for the familly and to be able to share the purchase. So far I have refrained from buying the same game twice. I would be perfectly OK with a digital library prohibiting to run the same game on different switches at the same time.

I can't really see Nintendo going for that due to the licensing EULA in most games. (you are paying to license one instance of the game) I know playstation has game sharing but that is to a separate account, (so they can check against sign ins), and many Nintendo games require the full copy of the game for multiplayer (not all but many) so short of allowing family plan users to purchases a discounted license ...yeah not sure how Nintendo would implement that in a way that ensures legality and profitability.

So I went 90% digital with the Switch and 3DS. I like the conviniece and it's hard to find physical copies with a good price in my country if you don't buy them on release day. But for next nintendo console, as long as they still use cartridges I plan to have a few more physcal games for display. Next generation I'm planning on ditching Playstation and sticking only with Nintendo (especially if they keep the hybrid/portable format). They have my favorites franchises/games and I don't have time and money to keep buying games for multiple devices and I really love playing portable while my wife watches tv

@Opaline-D I feel like Nintendo didn't anticipate how many multi-Switch households there would be. They definitely need better sharing capabilities.

Out of curiosity, do you do the primary/secondary Switch setup? I've used that before and it lets two people play the same game at the same time (with one digital purchase) as long as the person on the secondary Switch has internet access.

I've never tried 3 Switch but I assume it works as long as the two non-primary Switches don't play at the same time and are both online... however the non-primary Switches have to play on the exact same account which isn't great for a game without multiple save files and also can wipe save data if you aren't careful. Since it is already possible with inconvenience I feel like Nintendo could very easily improve this for family plans if they felt like it...

@Wolfleaf, yeah that's pretty common for movies.

Maybe not from small boutique publishers (who probably only obtain a physical license), but anything from a major studio (think films like Mario, Oppenheimer, Spider-Verse, etc.) usually come with a Blu-Ray copy, DVD copy, & Digital Copy code.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

I was thinking about the recent controversial article on Zelda and realized the only 2 (non-NSO) 2D zelda games we have on Switch both came out in 2019. We are realllly due one. I am doubling down on hoping late 2024 has 2D Zelda (ideally on Switch 2).

We have basically averaged one game a year + NSO games on Switch. Not counting DLC, we have:

2017 - 3D (BotW)

2018 -3D (spinoff/port, hyrule warriors definitive)
2018 -2D (NSO, Legend of Zelda)

2019 - 2D (remake, link's awakening)
2019 - 2D (spinoff, cadence of hyrule)
2019 - 2D (NSO, Zelda II)
2019 - 2D (NSO, link to the past)

2020 -3D (spinoff, age of calamity)

2021 - 3D (remaster, Skyward Sword)
2021 - 3D (NSO Expan, Ocarina of Time)

2022 - No new games on Switch proper.
2022 - 3D (NSO expan, Majora's Mask)

2023 - 3D (TotK)
2023 - 2D (NSO, link's awakening original)
2023 - 2D (NSO, oracle of ages)
2023 - 2D (NSO, oracle of seasons)
2023 - 2D (NSO expan, Minish Cap)

Yeah there has to be a 2D Zelda sometime soon. Hopefully actually a new one, we haven't had a new single player focused one since ALBW literally an entire decade ago. (even Triforce Heroes is 8 years now)

I read a comment the other day about digital codes being included with physical copies of movies? Don’t know how true that is because I haven’t bought a movie in years, but that would be solve all my problems with games. I think this gets debated a lot because either way you are having to compromise something.

It used to be a thing but they've stopped doing it. At least here in Australia. Also digital ownership of media disappearing as everything heads towards streaming. Google shut down their music and movie services fairly recently and merged them both into YouTube. Both are kinda afterthoughts now. Also this year Disney decided that they were going to stop making BluRays outright so it's disappearing on that side also

With that said, I still buy BluRays and rather than play them from the disc I'll rip them on my PC and stream them locally. Getting movies on BluRay is the highest quality version you can get. And ripping them is about as close as you can get to the only legal way to get a digital copy of a movie that's not tied to some company's server. I used to do the same with music and buy CDs but.... I think the last CD I got was at least two years ago

And I'm with you on PS5. I can't stand mine I've said this before, but i mainly just use it for PlayStation VR2. Resident Evil 4 Remake: VR Mode being the latest title i've been diving into. Plus I've got a Quest 3 on the way in the next few days. I miss 1995 'PS1' Sony. When they weren't afraid to get loud, fun, and in your face with advertising, the console itself looked unique and imagine that, it actually had COLOUR applied to it, as far button fonts go and the like. What can I say, video game consoles & controllers were so unique and looked amazing back in the 90's. These days, we typically get nothing but sterile character-lacking bland black & White boxes that are supposed to represent the future. lol Sony & MS have been doing this since the 2000's, and I for one hate it.

Right!? I miss sony era from PS1-PS3, unique exclusives. But gladly we have Nintendo to keep things fresh, unique and fun!
My PS5 is basically a Final Fantasy machine (XVI, XIV and rebirth lol)
I'm postponing games like Dragon's Dogma 2, Persona 3 and Granblue fantasy relink to play on next Nintendo console (unless I get the FOMO)

@Bunkerneath I will never forget watching and playing Wind waker for the first time with my cousin. It was magical. He brought his gamecube to my house and it was the best thing I ever saw. I really want this game on Switch

Geez that Disney comment almost had me panic buying Marvel movies...but looks like it is Australia only (which does suck btw...not dismissing that) but saved me about 300 in FOMO purchases. That being said I need to start grabbing all the Marvel shows and movies I can anyway before the go out of print. Might do a few a month.
