@JaxonH Looks awesome! It's rated M so it's a no go for me, but..... I really like the look of it.

Just out of curiosity, is that a personal thing where you just try to avoid that type of content, or is it an age restriction thing where you just can't get it?

I avoid some games myself, usually if they're too demonic/gory, though I have become somewhat desensitized to a lot of stuff just because it's in so much media nowadays. I've kinda learned to just ignore things that clash with my conscience which has worked for the most part. Games like Doom used to turn me off, but now I look at it as campy and just mindless fun killing evil creatures. I still won't play Mortal Kombat though. Just doesn't give me pleasure watching that sort of stuff.

I think Nier is probably rated M for violence and partial nudity, though I couldn't give specifics.

DOOM 2016 for me is a situation where the Switch's lack of power was a major benefit. I avoid gore (e.g. I toggle gore off in Gears, used no gore mode in Brutal Legend) but the low resolution and lower quality textures of DOOM 2016 on the Switch makes the gore very tame for me. I didn't bother with DOOM Eternal but that's because of the Bethesda account nonsense, if Bethesda removed the account requirement I'd definitely buy it and pick the Switch version over the Series X version.

@JaxonH I still kinda see myself as younger than I am, just (not too) recently I've started playing T rated games. M rated games are iffy for me, on the one hand games like Nier Automata exist and look really cool, but then games like GTA exist and are a huge no no (in my opinion). Now blood and gore I'm fine with in the right context, if it's science it's awesome and cool, if it's throwing knives and chopping off heads and guts spewing out ew not for me pls. I'm not like Anti-Matter when it comes to games, I enjoy the look of the old DOOM!!! (especially the all the ports)

Also not a lot of M rated games really appeal to me to the point of me wanting them.

@JaxonH The Switch port of NieR is looking phenomenal, holy crap!

Might pick it up on Switch just to own a physical copy (my PS4 version was digital).

@JaxonH I also don't play M rated games because a lot of the time the stories can be quite dark.

@NeonPizza
I couldn't do RE7. Played in VR. Quit and never touched the game again. Even RE Village, within like, an hour, had fingers chewed off and stuff. That's the sort of thing I really don't like. It's why I'm not really a fan of the RE games released after Revelations 1/2 (the remakes involve being chased which just never appealed to me much). I still prefer Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2, and Resident Evil 5 (I would say RE4 but no gyro aiming kills it, and it doesn't work well on PC due to the built in sway- maybe the remake will fix that).

@Kermit1
Ah, right on. I guess that means Bayonetta 3 is probably off the menu for you then. It's such a great series imo- Platinum's best. But it is pretty brutal, at least, the previous ones had their moments anyways. Nier might be a good compromise as it's not anywhere near the level of brutality shown in Bayonetta games (though I suspect Bayo3 may tone down the gruesome deaths some, which I'd be OK with). Not sure how dark the story is. It has more serious themes, but Idk if I'd say dark.

I actually found the rating info from that thread you linked.

Rating Category: M 17+

Content Descriptors: Blood, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Violence

Rating Summary: This is an action game in which players assume the role of androids attempting to save Earth from extraterrestrial machines. Players use swords, spears, lances, and lasers to destroy enemy robots in melee-style combat. Large explosions and realistic gunfire are frequently heard during combat. Some sequences depict blood and additional acts of violence against human-like characters: a man impaled through the chest with a sword, resulting in large blood-splatter effects; character lying in pools of blood after getting stabbed. Some characters wear revealing outfits with partially exposed buttocks; one male character is depicted nude (without genitalia). The words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard in the dialogue.

@Ralizah
It does. And it's only $39.99 all on cart with a few Switch exclusive items. Can't beat that. I fully intend to play this back to back with Bayonetta 3, which has always been my fave Platinum series. I couldn't get into Nier Replicant even after a second attempt on Deck, but Automata, from what I played, was pretty good. I never got that far though. Ended up dropping it for something else. Also need to finish Astral Chain. Maybe we'll make it a hat trick Platinum special.

It's good to support games like Nier Automata, Persona 5 Royal and Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core. Games/series fans have been asking for a long time, and which are receiving top shelf ports on Switch. Let the devs know that yes, we will buy your best games if you take the time to port them properly.

@JaxonH I never played Replicant. Now that they're porting Automata, I probably never will until it gets a port, lol. Day one if it does, though.

I really need to give Astral Chain another shot. I'm not a huge Platinum Games fan, but it mostly addresses the issues I have with Bayonetta, and I'm dying to see how it looks on my SWOLED.

As far as the story in NieR goes, it's about as heavy as any I've seen in a video game. Not a great fit for someone who doesn't like to think about tough questions, or struggles with controversial themes.

RE7 and 8, and the remake of 2, have a weird thing where there’s the random shocking gore during the first third or so of the game, and then the games become progressively campier and less graphic as the story progresses.

7 in particular moves from scary survival horror, to campy action game midway through the game.

8 is more fantastical from the outset, but I suppose that helps it maintain the tone a bit better. The body horror from the early game is actually used to explain something later on, so that was cool.

2… has basically 3 super gory reaction-bait moments in the first 30 minutes of the game… And then nothing too out of the ordinary after that.

The remake of 3 avoids that, somehow. It’s kinda like the inverse of 8, where it is more action based from the outset instead. So they didn’t need to rely on shock, I suppose.

@Ralizah
It feels like a different type of game altogether. The action doesn't feel the same, and it doesn't have the variety of gameplay Automata does. At least from what I played. The original release wasn't well received, similar to Drakengard games. It has its niche fans who swear by it, but they saw through the faults as something more than the sum of its parts. I was surprised the remake got reviewed so well given the original reception. I suppose Automata changed the lens through which people viewed it.

I'd be willing to try Replicant again if I finish Automata and get really into it. That would probably help make it more enjoyable and easier to get attached to the characters and world.

I do love how we have so much variety on offer from Platinum on Switch though. Like, I remember when Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 released on Wii U, and just having 480p off-tv play within 20 feet of the console was exciting.

Now we have Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 1, Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta 3, Astral Chain and Nier Automata all on an OLED handheld hybrid. How cool is that. This system is legendary. 3DS never offered these kinds of games, and certainly not in HD with dual analog and full button set and rumble even if it did. Neither did Vita (though I suppose it at least got GoW Collection), or any prior handheld before that.

And poor 3DS. All those years getting Persona Q, and eventually Persona Q2, but never actually getting a mainline Persona game, all the while the Wii U-level failure Vita was boasting Persona 4 Golden. Now? We have an HD OLED handheld hybrid with Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royal and Persona 5 Strikers and Persona 4 Ultimax.

Poor 3DS, all those years, only getting a Final Fantasy rhythm game and the mediocre Explorers. Meanwhile the Vita sitting pretty with the masterpiece Final Fantasy X/X-2. Now? We have an HD OLED hybrid handheld with a far better version of Final Fantasy X/X-2, but also Final Fantasy XII, and FFVII, FFVIII Remastered, FFIX Remastered, Chocobo Mystery Dungeon, a bigger and better Theatrhythm and, the crown jewel, Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core.

6-7 years ago, in the Dark Ages of Nintendo, I never would have dreamed of having experiences like this all on one HD OLED hybrid handheld device. And I loved the 3DS in its day. It was my favorite system! Graphics were poor, resolution was poor, button options were poor, OS speed was slow, etc, but the games were seriously good. But after Switch? It doesn't even feel fair to compare them.

@NeonPizza I'm of the view that provided a game is stable on the Switch and it's a native version (not cloud), I will always pick Switch over the power consoles. The Switch is just a much more pleasant experience in general like Switch Pro controller is the best controller, the Switch OS is so much faster and if I sometime in the future feel like playing something in handheld mode I can do.

@JaxonH ya I saw that. I have some other sources for stuff like that, that do a better job lol.

Ya Beyo 3 is off the menu for me, it doesn't really appeal to me.

I want to play only those rated games now that I looked at some M rated stuff, they're all dark, a little too dark for me.

@NeonPizza haha yeah, 7 is kind of all over the place. The first half of it is super good and scary, so there’s that, but it loses focus very fast afterwards.

I haven't played the dlc myself.

@NeonPizza I wasn't talking about RE (I don't play horror games), I was referring to your other comment about PS5 being the place to play DOOM Eternal.
