For current gen consoles, I own the most on Switch physically. Around 80 right now. It's a very collectible console and I feel in about 10 years long after the next Nintendo system comes out the sales of more limited distributions of physical games and collector's editions will skyrocket and people will be trying to gobble them up. I actually play my Switch more than my PS4 and my Xbox (but not more than PC that's my main gaming machine). It's amazing how much momentum the Switch has compared to the Wii U and more quality games over the Wii. While it's not the most games I own overall for one system (I believe with PS1 I'm at nearly 200 games and original Xbox is around 130) it might be up there in about five years.

The Switch is just too expensive for me to own many games. Maybe I’m spoilt by being a PC gamer, but you never really have to pay full price for any game on PC. I’m not talking about piracy, just different store fronts will usually always have some kind of discount on a title. Whereas I find with Nintendo, at least when it comes to the games I want, they rarely ever go on sale and rarely by a significant margin. Even like going on to say Amazon, sometimes the games are more expensive than just through the Eshop directly. It is one thing I really didn’t take into account when buying my Switch. It is cheaper than it’s counterparts to own the actual console, but accessories and software are just as - if not more so - expensive.

Meanwhile, after I rewrite what games I can build for my PS4 games library, looks like there are a lot of multi console release games I decided to get on PS4 version instead of Switch version as i still prefer PS4 cover version with Blue box and blue banner on top than Switch version with red spine and generic fonts.
I have registered 60 PS4 games on my list after some changes.
And for Switch library games on my list, even i gave more games for PS4 version, there are already 100+ Switch titles on my list.

It's just nice having flexibility in how you play. In ever other facet of our lives we've moved on to mobile experiences. Be it phones, tablets, casting between screens, etc. Having that same freedom in video games is... well, I won't say priceless, but it does feel hard to put a price on it.

BTW, playing Tetris Connected handheld seems like the perfect fix for the eye overload. Problem is, I suddenly lost all interest in playing handheld on a non-OLED screen, and that thing won't be here for another week from Target (and Walmart hasn't even started preparing shipment lol... oh man this sucks). I'll get around to it next weekend and let ya know how it goes 😀

Ok, time to make a pot of coffee and get back to Metroid...

Oh my gosh. This never happens.

Metroid Dread is #1 on the eShop. Not just in the "30 best sellers that aren't free" but on the entire storefront, even eclipsing Pokémon Unite, YouTube, Fortnite, etc.

@JaxonH Not sure what you mean. When has a Metroid game ever launched on an eshop before, apart from Samus Returns? What are you comparing it to?

Other games, not "other Metroid".

It's been forever since I've seen a game do this. Diablo 2 certainly didn't do it, and that game absolutely smashed. Zelda Skyward Sword didn't do it. Mario Golf didn't do it. Warioware didn't do it. I'm not even sure if Monster Hunter Rise did it, tbh.

I'm sure some games have over the years- Zelda BotW, Mario Odyssey, anything mainline Pokémon, but ya.

This is a major feat, especially given the fact it's a 2D Metroid game.

@JaxonH The screenshot you've shared is not one I'm used to seeing. I tend to just browse the main charts page every now and then. When it says 'Bestsellers', what does it mean? Over the past 2 weeks, like the main chart page, or something else?

The hierarchy should be:

OG Switch
Switch Lite
Switch V2
Switch V2 Special Editions
OLED OVERLORDS.

Life to the living, death to the dead.

chapuH

@Longondo I'm not sure it would be great.
Firstly, it would be patronising and mocking to people who are happy with their OG Switch / Switch Lite or people who can't afford a replacement.
As for the OLED-only articles, that would be the equivalent of a news media paywall and ridiculously unfair. It would be like NL got taken over by EA.
Thirdly, how would you enforce the system? I could just say I have a Switch OLED (I don't) and I'm instantly an "Elite".

Hope you're having a good day.

The other thing that pushed game ownership up on Switch for me is the lack of region locking. I was always required to buy two systems per upgrade and that plus the unwieldiness of the early eshop (not everything was digital) meant I was forced to over pay in imports. That eats into funds after a point. The other thing is an american issue… I have paid down most of my student loans and given up on home ownership so that also frees up income. But when I was under the majority of that student loan yoke? Yeah buying a game meant Overtime, multiple jobs and a sandwich and salad diet.

I pretty much only buy games on sale at this point due to the size of my eshop wishlist. That’s why I am anxiously awaiting BF. (Already looking at 30-50 games.)

Just something to distinguish us OLEDs who are in a higher status fan category right now

Lol lol rofl lol 🤣

I like this guy. Yes, give me my gold star already. Who doesn't love lording superiority over "the peasants", ammirite? Lol

@gcunit
I believe so, but this list can be found in the search option for all software, and includes free games, apps, bundles, DLC and of course, paid games. Typically, games that top the best sellers chart are not actually the #1 software from the search list, as free games, demos, apps and the like are hard to compete with. Things like the free Pokémon Unite are insanely difficult to top. Seeing Metroid Dread reach such a position, even temporarily, gives us a glimpse into its potential overall performance.

@X-Slayer Satoru Iwata, former president of Nintendo (and HAL!). I tend to use Japanese honorifics when writing Japanese names as opposed to Mr. Doug Bowser as I would for a western person. As I stated earlier in the thread I am a Southerner from the US so, respectful manners are ingrained in me and part of my culture. However, I personally find Japanese as a language to be more evocative than English (English is more descriptive imo, but Japanese can convey a feeling or sense of being better and more succinctly). As for why I use -denka for Satoru Iwata, it allows me to convey my deep respect for him beyond the -sama honorific. Obviously a Japanese person would look at me like I was nuts for using it, but that's the fun thing about language, it can be adopted and given it's own spin. I of course don't use it when talking to a Japanese speaker, as it would be confusing to them. Anyway, it is rare to have a CEO that worked himself up from the trenches and remained not only humble and generous but affable as well. Hard work is a cornerstone in my family/culture and something that we place extremely high value on, so when I hear about people that work hard and are still good people, it auto bumps them up in my book.

Oh, yeah, Steam alone is great with sales, along with plenty of legal options for discounted keys, @Pizzamorg .... I hardly ever pay full price for any games there & the £50+ ones I'd want on launch either have discounts on Steam or other keyshops
There's a few upcoming games available for pre-purchase there I'm waiting on for that reason. Since there's enough I already have, I can wait until whenever they do go on sale since that's bound to happen soon enough anyway

Heh.

I always tell myself I’m going to scoop up a bunch of games in Steam sales, but when the time comes there’s never anything to buy because I preorder everything I want day one.

But I can usually score $10 off Steam preorders using isthereanydeal website.

For Switch, I score 9% off loading eShop cred purchased from Raise at a discount, plus 2% back using my CC when doing it, and then get 5% back in gold coins, so I’m landing an effective 16% off digital day one for every single Switch game I buy, which is about $10.

So either way I’m paying the same price on Switch and Steam- $50 day one. If it’s a game I really want to play, I don’t have the patience to wait 6 months just to save an extra $20. And if it’s a game I don’t want to play badly enough so that I decide to wait, then I just don’t buy the game at all, as there’s too many games that I am excited enough to buy day one, and I’d rather play those.

I still preorder plenty on PC, but even preorders through key sellers usually go significantly below the asking price. You can usually get at least 10 to 20 quid off, depending on when you buy. And that is without discount codes or whatever else. I know there are ways to replicate those kinds of savings in the Nintendo store, but it requires investment to get the investment back out again and it is proportionate. PC games just generally are cheap or at least cheaper, across the board. No efforts required.

And that divide only grows over time, lots of Nintendo first party games never go down from full price outside of special event sales. Whereas every PC game will eventually be more than half of it’s launch price and you usually don’t have to wait as long as you might expect.

It is the main reason I ended up barely using my Series X. I did plan to spread my gaming out between console and PC, but if a game isn’t on Gamepass, it usually costs me close to twice as much just for the privilege of playing on my Xbox, so I just pick it up on PC instead.

I do think that that is often a sort of unspoken component to the PC value proposition. A PC may potentially cost you more upfront depending on specs, but I feel like long term, it is so much cheaper to be a PC gamer. You can make it more expensive depending on what like keyboard or mouse you use, but you can game pretty freely on PC at a very tight budget. Whereas it seems you rarely have that luxury on console, unless you wanna play ancient games or hope they turn up on Gamepass.

There's really not much effort involved for Switch discounts. CC money back is automatic, as are gold coins. They only active thing you really have to do is buy eShop cred from Raise. Which takes about 2 minutes. Whenever my balance drops below $150, I load up Raise from a shortcut on my phone, add $50 eShop credit to my cart, and hit the purchase button. Then enter the code on my Switch, and I'm all topped up.

You’re still only getting a small discount though. Better than a kick in the teeth, but there is no real comparison to the kind of discounts PC games just have naturally.

Hmm, just did a system/user transfer to my new Switch OLED, but it seems none of the save data actually got moved there. I guess I have to transfer the save data individually now? Definitely a bit of a hassle..
