@JaxonH@TheFrenchiestFry I think it's also about filling in gaps. Metroidvania became a very common genre for indie games at least partially because Nintendo decided to abandon 2D Metroid for a long time and Konami's move from games to pachinko machines.
As for open world, I think BotW is to blame for it lasting so long. BotW showed you can add open world to a franchise where it doesn't belong but it still becomes a gigantic success. Pokemon Legends Arceus will probably do something similar in that regard.

What does this even mean? If anything, the way botw treats its world is what Zelda was always aspiring to be but wasn't able to fullfil due to hardware constraints.
Also, I don't like open world games but I adore BOTW. I don't like "souls like" games but I absolutely love Fromsoft games. Why is that so hard to understand? I love Doom but I don't like most shooters. Labeling games just doesn't work.
@JoyBoy 3D Zelda games had good stories but adding full open world disrupts the ability to create a good story because you're not forced down a general linear path to experience events in a certain order. The path 3D Zelda games took prior to BotW made it seem the path was heading more towards something like Xenoblade. Semi-open world rather than full open world so a strong story can still be told given semi-open world still has a general linear path.
But in the end the drastic change happened for BotW and was extremely successful causing a new wave of franchises having their take on BotW.
I got some updated news from Re:Legend Twitter (Kickstarters).
As you may have known, we've been working towards the last stretch of multiplayer stability for several months now and things are looking better with every passing week. We have successfully stabilized the connection of 4 players multiplayer and are working towards fixing all the remaining bugs
There are currently about 16 critical bugs that’s left to fix and they are mostly related to the same source, which is the synchronization of multiplayer. The rest of the bugs are not very severe as they are leaning towards information that pops up on the screen or small amount of graphical glitches like flickering of textures due to lighting setup.
Once the critical bugs are fixed, we will continue to port Re:Legend to consoles and it should be done within a couple of months. Progress of console porting was made previously so it should not take long for us to complete the process. We’re also working with an experienced porting company right now so the console version of the game should be in good hands.
Nonetheless, there is one factor that will affect our release date and it is the sole reason why we’re unable to come up with a solid release date at the moment. The single most important factor is the time taken for Sony and Nintendo to approve our game on their platform. Every game that goes onto Sony and Nintendo consoles needs to be reviewed before being released so that process might take some time. We do have a rough estimation of the time that they might take to review the game but we do not know if we need to iterate the game to fit their requirements. If everything goes according to plan, we should be able to release the 1.0 of the game in Q4 of 2021.
The reason why we want to release the 1.0 version of the game on PC and consoles together is because we want you to be able to play on the platform that you prefer and do not have to be forced into playing the game on a platform that you’re not familiar with. We understand that many of our players prefer the game to be on consoles and the game is only available on PC right now so we don’t want anyone to feel left out during the actual release of the game.
To celebrate the 1.0 of the game, we have prepared some exclusive contents for both PC and console versions of the game so each platform will have a little bit of extra flavor. We have talked about them in the past and we will release more information about the exclusive content when the time draws nearer to the actual release.
That is all for this month’s update and do let us know about your thoughts regarding our progress and plans. Specto would also like to know if you like it’s design and it’s skill so leave a comment to make it feel better! We would like to thank everyone for the continuous support, bug reports and translation suggestions from the community. If you have more feedback on the changes we have done, feel free to reach out to us. Together we can continue to improve Re:Legend!
@Grumblevolcano I guess I am glad the majority wasn't too thrilled about the direction they were heading in Story was never really that prominent in even the 3d games though. And even if you count SS, that game was maybe the whole reason for the drastic shift.
Story or no story, these are small petty things to talk about imo. BOTW marks the beginning of Zelda being ambitious again. Which got me and a lot of people excited.
@Grumblevolcano
I think it's expected more with 2D games. There's only so much variety you can offer without going 3D, and there's far more indie devs trying. That said, even within 2D Metroidvania, the gameplay feels significantly different in each one.

@Grumblevolcano Most Zelda games barely have stories. They have plot skeletons that hold the experience together. And the experience is generally: 'go here to collect the thing to unlock this other place to collect this other thing.' Usually with the goal of awakening the master sword or freeing ancient sages or whatnot.
It's fluff. Zelda games aren't interested in telling stories. Or exploring character relationships. And, IMO, it's why something like BotW works so well versus something like Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Yea, trends do start to drag after awhile. The difference, as you said, with some other genre trends that Nintendo has gone through (3D Zeldas, for instance), is that there were gaps in between the games. Some were particularly big, like Twlight Princess to SS was at 5ish years. That's more than enough time for people to cool their toes before the next installment.
But the AAA situation right now is just ludicrous. The mere thought of playing Cyberpunk exhausts me. And the saddest thing is, I can pretty much imagine what playing that game is like without ever even playing it. I can picture the map, the waypoints, the skill trees, the side quests, the crafting, even elements of the combat. Yea, every game will have its "special" tricks, but it's getting so stale and predictable. Put a cowboy skin on it and you have Red Dead. Put a Viking skin on it and you have Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Put it into first person and you have Far Cry.
Personally, I was just never into open worlds even before the trend began. Too overwhelming and I prefer a more cohesive kind of thing when I sit down to play a game, so that makes me more negative on this than most people for sure.
Pokémon Company anounce a Pokémon Presents for august 18th at 6 am , featuring information regarding Pokémon Legend Arceus and the remakes of Diamond e Pearl.
But Switch needs some GTA. And THREE different games Remastered sound like the next best thing to GTAV itself. In fact, depending on how well they're Remastered, may even be better. I still wanna see GTAV later on, but this needs to happen.
BTW, Switch monopolizing Japan top 30, first time since 1988 (33 years ago!) is a pretty big deal. Unfortunately, Trails of Cold Steel 1/2 ports failed to make any significant impact, as we've come to expect from JP Switch gamers. They need to localize them asap. We in the west will snap them up. Believe that.

I'll actually defend Zelda stories and say that...enough of them are able to get some real quality stuff out of not necessarily a ton of story. The best example being Link's Awakening, which has a real bittersweet feeling by its end and has a cute 5-10 minute sequence that's one of the only examples of young love I've personally enjoyed in gaming (though I'll admit that's not something I've looked for in games). I mean, I've seen plenty of games with hours of cutscenes (or in general are more story focused) that I never cared about as much as the GAMEBOY ZELDA STORY. But seriously for a gameboy game from 1993, beyond the two things I mentioned, its really well written and charming compared to most games of its era.
Yes I am saying I like the Marin part of Link's Awakening better than Skyward Sword Zelda and the fairly obvious romantic focus of that (though Skyward Sword's is also better than most I've seen in games, to be fair).
