Started playing Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne Remastered on Switch about an hour ago.

It’s very different from SMTIV. I mean, in many ways it’s not, but it has a very different feel. It’s certainly dated (can’t wait for SMTV to push the series forward and modernize), but it’s still intriguing and entertaining nonetheless.

After seeing Rune Factory 5 footage, which didn’t look too impressive (how does it still look like a 3DS game and yet averages 25 FPS? What gives?) and sucked the wind right out of my hype sailboat, I was feeling a little down. Because that was a game very high up on my list. And I’m sure it’ll still be a great game, and hopefully they’ll patch it up a bit before the localization, but it’s like, ugh. Come on with that.

But SMT3, which wasn’t high up on my list, has suddenly enticed me, and it feels like it’s almost replaced the lost gusto from Rune Factory 5. That, combined with No No Kuni 2, Ys 9, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Neo TWEWY and Zelda Skyward Sword, and a potential Cruise ‘n Blast Switch port, has lifted my spirits.

I need that Cruise ‘n Blast. I NEED it. I’ve been wanting that game on Switch for years. Never thought it would actually happen though because they tend to keep their arcade games in the arcade.

@JaxonH Nocturne is a bit short on plot compared to IV and IV: Apocalypse, but the atmosphere, challenge, and worldbuilding are fantastic nonetheless. This was also, I believe, one of Atlus' first full 3D games. First game to introduce the press turn combat system, variations of which are in basically all their RPGs now. SMT was really nothing to write home about outside of the unique themes until Nocturne. It's a classic in every sense.

As for RF5, I'm not too worried about it. Nocturne HD was a mess at launch in Japan as well. These companies are increasingly treating the Japanese releases as soft launches while they iron out the bugs and performance issues for the more profitable worldwide release.

Ys IX, though... I'm a bit weary of that release. I really hope NIS has learned a lot from its work on previous Falcom games because, as I recall, it had performance issues even on the PS4 when it first launched in Japan.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PC); Unicorn Overlord (NS)

Ralizah

@Slowdive Ys IX, huh? Not sure if that bodes well for the port or not.

@Slowdive So they're the ones who did Cold Steel III? Nice.

Thanks for the list!

@Ralizah
And Trails of Cold Steel IV, they just haven’t updated their website and moved it from the “In Development” section.

And Trails IV was a better port than Trails III imo. Seems like they’re getting better at Switch development with each entry. The fact they also did the first Ni No Kuni hopefully means we have nothing to worry about. Ni No Kuni, Trails of Cold Steel III and Trails of Cold Steel IV were all solid releases on Switch.

@Slowdive suspicious indeed. I'd still rather get the physical release myself, if that's even available.

Lack of physical often has nothing to do with file size. Just has to do with cost-benefit analysis of how much they think a physical version will sell. Plenty of games don’t get physical versions in the west despite a low file size. Ace Attorney Trilogy comes to mind. Famicom Detective Club. The list goes on. So assuming the file size truly is what it says, that’s still not enough to say “there’s no reason”. File size isn’t the only factor that plays into the decision to release physically. Multiple variables are at play. Including the higher % cut that goes to the manufacturer, the retail cut, costs of manufacturing and shipping, projected sales and projected digital sales lost due to physical release, etc.

That being said, plenty of games have one download size but the installation size doubles. Add to that day one updates, and it’s possible a 4GB game is 10-15 GB after everything is said and done. Not saying that’s the case, but until we know more, we have to entertain the possibility.

Wait you can buy the ninja gaiden trilogy for the same price as miitopia????!!!!! How is that even possible? I thought it must cost a lot of money to port games based on Nintendo’s pricing strategy.

Maneater looks legit.

I was worried the Switch port would be an atrocity but no, it looks fantastic. Just preordered the physical version. My brother said he loved that game.

I got Maneater on PS5 when it was part of the PS+. Can't quite get into it. Maybe I shall try again one day.

@Northwind Yeah, I feel like Kanto second stage mons are really strong in design. The starters, Haunter, Machoke Kadabra, Dragonair, and even some that get evos later like Seadra and Rhydon are all wonderful. I suspect it's because the design of Pokemon for Gen 1 wasnt focused on designing pokemon as a family, instead adding and removing evolutions freely throughout development.

Could of will I be able to get every switch game in physical form and is there a nintendo life app ?

@Ninfan Not really. There are a lot of Switch games you can get in a physical format, but quite a few are download-only. I don't think there's a Nintendo Life app, the closest thing to that is browsing the site on a mobile browser.

Can't wait for Mario Golf and SSHD. Feels kind of slow these days.

I still need to catch everything in Sword, though lol

@rallydefault beyond excited for those two releases as well. Looking forward to ZAMY +ghoul patrol, and Tony hawk too.

With Asha in Monster World, Ninja Gaiden trilogy, Mario Golf, & Skyward Sword coming in the near future, there's more coming out than I can reasonably play (that & I'm getting on with Famicom Detective Club: the Missing Heir more than I thought I would, so I'll be wanting to get around to the Girl Who Stands Behind sometime in the future as well).

Oh, and I still haven't gotten Pikmin 3: Deluxe, Wonderful 101 Remastered, Hyrule Warriors: AoC, Gun Gun Pixies, Devil May Cry 3 HD, or any of the myriad of Resident Evil games available either. Somebody save me from the Switch game onslaught, lol.

It’s good to expand your horizons sometimes. Normally I wouldn’t think a game like Maneater would appeal to me, but after watching that video, it absolutely does. The premise of getting caught by the shark Hunter and hung upside down on a boat in the bayou, while he cuts you open and takes out your baby shark, which he then cuts to “mark” for when he spears it as an adult so he can recognize it, and the baby bites his hand off and escapes over board, and the game then shifts to you playing the baby that is now out for revenge... muah! So good!

And it legitimately looks impressive on Switch. I couldn’t believe the screenshots when I first saw them on the eShop. I thought for sure they were doing false advertising like a lot of other developers have, putting PS shots on the eShop. But after watching the footage it seems I was wrong- that’s actually the Switch version.

I think of it as a modern take on Ecco the Dolphin 😉 and who didn’t like Ecco, ammirite? Ecco the Dolphin, Jaws the Maneating Shark... tomato, tomahto
