So I've had a thought. I think we're all expecting some sort of Nintendo Switch Online update in September to coincide with many of the renewals coming due. N64 has been mentioned as has GB/GBC/GBA and GameCube. I think one of those is possible, but I would expect some sort of tier system. Keep the existing NES and SNES tier at $20. Add one of the systems mentioned and it goes up to $25 or $30.

What if Nintendo launches their own version of PS+ or GamePass? Granted, this is Nintendo, so I'm thinking something like 1 free game that rotates monthly. Maybe this service is $30 a year. Then, you'd have $60 total for the whole thing. They've already been dabbling with those 7 day free trials. Most have been first party games, but they had some indie games like Dead Cells in Japan which has gotten more free trials than anywhere else. I could see them using this service for their less popular first party titles like Kirby and Yoshi along with some select indie games. Older games that have probably already had the majority of their sales. Maybe this is a replacement for the Nintendo Selects line, or is in addition to it?

Love anything Zelda. Most other Ninty franchises too! Purposely vague...

If a studio has been working with an IP, such as Batman, and the trust is there already, and negotiations are clearly already in place, I see no reason they would suddenly stop just because Microsoft owns them.

In fact it would only make it more likely that Microsoft themselves pays for the rights instead of that studio.

I'll take more Ys wherever I can get it...though I do already have it on 2 systems, and Origin isn't really the best Ys.

Falcom in Autumn: We're focusing exclusively on Playstation and have no interest in bringing our games to other platforms other than if someone else is porting and publishing it.

Falcom in Summer: We've sent EVERYTHING to third party publishers for Switch.

They didn't do it fast, but at least someone managed to show them where their audience actually is!

Omg. A steel book! ❤️❤️❤️

Well that’s an automatic purchase then. It just is.

Having owned all the YS games but only briefly playing the older ones, I can’t comment on the best except to say that YS VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is generally accepted as the best. But Origin is certainly up there I think- if you look at any of the ranked list by fans, one of the common things you’ll see is Origin is at the top or near the top. So it may not be the best (no older entry will top YS VIII) but it definitely seems to be well regarded.

The original article were this is all coming from about the buy out was saying the plan for the sale is to include licencing the brands to the various studios once sold so the dip in revenue isn't so bad from losing game sales. So it looks likely for the next few years at least they will keep working on the same various titles still. Of course Microsoft decided the best use of Rare was to make Kinetic games so you never know.

It makes sense too since if they did lose the rights it will completely mess up the work already done as games have long development times and the R&D for those games would be a huge write off putting off potential buyers since that cost would have to written off in the consolidated accounts for the parent company and not WBs. Plus it means the Suicide Squad game will still come out so I'm happy.

Whatever happens, they'll probably get to finish whatever they are working on. But if MS does end up buying it, I think those games are still coming to the platforms that were originally planned. After that they'd probably have to negotiate the license again, because from that point on it's going to be console exclusive to Xbox. Even MLB demanded Sony to turn the franchise into a multiplat series, otherwise they'd revoke the license.

Hmm, Ys Origin might be the worst entry in the series. Still, it isn't a bad game. Right, I guess it's time to sell my PS Vita copy then.

Fair point. But if anyone’s willing to pay for it I think it would be Microsoft, especially since they are looking to bolster their IP (something they’ve been needing to do for a long time now).

But even if they didn’t, Rocksteady is a very talented studio. No matter what they do, even a new IP, it’s gonna turn heads.

I guess everyone has an opinion. So some think it’s the best, some think it’s the worst, and some find it in between.

@JaxonH Like I said, talent can easily move to other studios.

Anyway. I'm not sure MS needs it. They've been on a buying spree of companies as of late, probably in preparation of the Series X. We haven't seen any of those games, but they have quite a lot more studios than they did a few years ago. And they have a bunch of exclusive rights to games as well, including indies, so quite a varied portfolio if you ask me. There is a lot of potential.

@JaxonH

Do they though? They only recently bought Compulsion, InXile, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, and Playground Games back in 2018. Followed by Double Fine in 2019.

I think they need more recognizable IP though. More so than just studios. They need at least 1-2 bangers that people are like, “I NEED to buy an Xbox to play that game”. And while Hellblade 2 will surely be great, I’m not sure it fits that bill. Rocksteady could be their Insomniac, regardless of what game they end up making.

@Magician
Well, ya. The fact they recently bought those studios just proves the point. They’ve been needing to do that for a very long time. But not all the ones they bought make big games. They’ve got a few new good ones, but that shouldn’t give cause to hang their hat and call it a day. At least, not when an opportunity presents itself. And buying a studio that has made GotY titles is a rare opportunity.

Obsidian was their best scoop thus far, and Hellblade 2 will do very well, but they’re going to need more than that if they really want to make waves. They’re going to need an onslaught of top-tier talent cranking out the best money can buy. If you take the temperature of the gaming community you will find it three out of four gamers say they have no intention of buying an Xbox because “MS doesn’t have the games”. It’s a very common sentiment due to the damage done this generation.

They have any hope of changing that it’s not going to be with just Hellblade 2 and Obsidian. They need game of the year quality titles that aren’t Halo or Gears. At least one IP of that caliber. Every year you see Sony with an exclusive in the GotY list, even when not deserved- Death Stranding cough cough, and we’re guaranteed to see a repeat with TLO2 due to access media praising it like the second coming, despite all the major non-access media million-viewer Youtubers dumping all over it, from AngryJoe to SkillUp, ACG and even diehard Sony fans like YongYea, but that’s neither here nor there. The point is the games are still in the list, and Microsoft needs a game in that running every year.

Gears 5 was so good. I felt it was GotY worthy. Halo Infinite will surely be excellent. But I think people are kind of tired of that series though. They need new IP.

@JaxonH I'm not sure a new IP from Rocksteady is as valuable as the Batman IP though. A new IP certainly isn't a recognisable IP.

Octane

Grumblevolcano

@JaxonH I think it's more most of their recognizable IPs have been dormant for years/decades leaving Halo, Gears and Forza as the big 3. Yes there are rumours about some of the dormant IPs returning but we'll likely see later this month if they're true.

Grumblevolcano

JaxonH

@Octane
Definitely not, but that doesn’t mean it’s worthless or not worth pursuing. Recognizable IP can be built ground up. Look at Horizon. That wasn’t as “valuable” as Spider-Man and now look at it. It’s their premier IP. That’s exactly what Microsoft needs to do. If they can get Batman, fantastic, if not, then let them make something new and build something from the ground up that people love. Yes it takes more work but that’s what they need to do and they need a studio that’s capable of doing it and rocksteady is definitely a studio that’s capable of doing it
