oh s**t. Luna Nights coming to Switch! I don't think I'll rebuy the game, but if anyone wants a nice Metroidvania-ish game (not too much backtracking though, but there's some backtracking for some secrets), this is a really great game! It's not too heavy on Touhou lore too so you can ignore it and focus on the gameplay.

Definitely very lovely game with the timestop mechanism that is incorporated to the game. Like timestop isn't op like usual but instead is an integral part of the gameplay. Definitely give it a look if you like what I'm talking about ^^

I’ll take a Nights game. I thought it was Nights Into Dreams. Nevermind.

@1UP_MARIO I watched the video, but the differences look incredibly minor to me. What am I supposed to be looking for? There's a tiny increase in sharpness, but that's all I'm seeing.

That video wasn’t the best. The differences are more noticeable in person, but also those older games are just so low res that you don’t notice as much. It works well enough that if you have really fine and a granular staircase aliasing, it’s smooth is it out, but if the stair casing is too big then it’s not really going to work. Best to look at the previous images I posted, but here’s a couple more.

If you look closer you can see how much smoother many edges are. And when viewing from a distance like you would on your television it pretty much smooth together to the point you don’t notice anything. It’s not a huge difference like you would see from a more powerful system but it’s definitely a noticeable improvement, and it’s probably the only graphical increase within our reach for Switch.

All games without AA get a nice improvement, but some games look better than others. The scaling in particular will vary, and depends on what the game renders at.

Started downloaded Youngblood around 3 or 4pm yesterday and I was hoping it would be done by the time I woke up for work today so I can play it on lunch. Nope only 70%. Oh well. Guess I'll play late tonight or tomorrow.

@JaxonH " I should have the freedom to choose what I post about without being questioned. Agreed?"
Nobody has ever suggested otherwise, at least in this thread

"Suffice it to say, people dont have to understand, or relate. "
People certainly don't have to relate, but understanding is the entire goal of discourse, and arriving at understanding is the whole point of discussion and/or debate. Or more appropriately, lack of understanding is generally the source of pretty much all actual argument. In the context of the appearance that you "always like everything" for example, which my point in my first post was that I have that impression as well, your simple explanation that it's not that you like everything but that you only tend to post about things you like clarified the realty from the appearance and created understanding. I'd say understanding is always critical 100% of the time, no exceptions. And any exception guarantees conflict.

"Oftentimes when I come across as arguing its because someone is being hostile or arguing or insulting toward me"
While I can't understand why you'd have assumed ill intent from me, someone you have a long positive history in interacting with, you might be interested in one trick I tend to use here when I'm not sure if someone is actually being hostile or insulting toward me undeservedly, if it's not someone I'm familiar with, is I just go check their profile and scan through their post history to size them up. It's very helpful with the context that you can't always tell someones intent in text on the internet. If I see a history that they're belligerent to people, seeking fights, generally unpleasant in demeanor, or just total jerks/trolls, I know to size up that they're generally attacking me for no reason. That happens sometimes. Other times I'll look through and generally see absolutely nothing questionable in their history, general good behavior, reasoned debate, pleasant interaction with others. In those cases I realize it's not them, I'm either reading what they said in the wrong/defensive context, or I somehow instigated them even if I didn't realize it.

There's always those folks in the gray area that seem like they're master baiters but haven't had the opportunity to strike so you get a general "vibe" from their post history but no "actionables" out of it....but 98% of the time it's a solid tool to use. The people actually attacking me for an opinion generally ahave histories of jerky behavior to others. And the ones that seem like they're attacking me but have no history of jerky behavior to others...the problem is probably either me, either my comments to them, or just my mood and resulting interpretation of their words. (If it's someone I AM familiar with I know they're not being undeservedly hostile (usually) and thus the context creates appropriateness.)

Sure, it's "work", but dealing with people, in any capacity, is generally work. At least worthwhile interaction, anyway.

I realize you're knee-deep in FE today, so that's probably the end of this paralogue

On other topics, for the m-Cable, did you set your Switch to 720p like they suggest or are you still running it at 1080p? (Edit: Just noticed you already answered that after the line I was reading.) I'd considered on in the base PS4 era but the FSAA on Pro replaced the need for it. For some reason I never thought of it for Switch. It's intriguing, though I dislike the idea of buying an expensive video processor built into a cable guaranteed to fail rather than a dedicated processor box. Seems like they went with an intentionally self-destructive design to keep you re-buying. But...I do hate Jaggies & sparkles. I'd probably try to get an HDMI coupler for it though to piggy back it to the normal cable rather than putting it at the end. It would have to go straight into the Switch dock - I don't need it interfering with X1X's already processed output. Might be fun for PSVR, too, though I'd worry that any interference there could ruin the effect.

Every time I hear "Jaggies" I can't help but think of the Atari Jaguar. Like, lmao.

Fire Emblem should be coming in the mail tonight. Likely can't play all day though, because I'll be playing Cards Against Humanity tonight with friends. Rip.

@Ralizah Aren't you the one who thinks XC2 looks ZOMG HORRIBLE on handheld and I thought it looked fine? But you aren't annoyed by jaggies and sparkles when docked?

Keep in mind YouTube compression is **BRUTAL** on video detail. The marketing page is garbage with the before/after sliders (Odyssey never looked that blurred or washed out with the console's own upscaling.) But you also can't tell video differences in YT because the built in compression butchers and re-interpolates everything anyway.

The mCables are basically a "Lite" version of a dedicated scaler/deinterlacer like you'd find in a mid-to-high end receiver (Anchor Bay chips and the like.) If you have a receiver that already has a low latency high performance scaler/deinterlacer you probably already have something better than the m-Cable (and runs a lot hotter....) Or if you have a high-end TV like a Sony XBR or something you probably have a better (or similarly good) one built in there. It's "cheap" compared to console-style processor boxes, though probably not as good, but expensive for an HDMI cable that's inherently going to fail. For Switch though, since most games lack AA, it might be advantageous.

@JaxonH I haven’t had a chance to open the box, I’ll do that and post images in a moment, as I had to go out for a few hours. But I posted the box and coin bag on my Twitter earlier. I’m not sure where would be a good place to upload pictures to embed into this site as I don’t want to break rules with posting my own tweets in case it comes across as promoting it.

Nintendo changed the video title from "July" to "Summer" so maybe DQ Hero isn't coming next week. Could be that a Smash Direct is announced at EVO instead.

EDIT: On a different note, DOOM trilogy is out today (DOOM, DOOM II, Doom 3).

@NEStalgia
nobody suggested otherwise

They certainly did. The validity of my opinions was called into question and I was insulted for them. And then you defended it and told me how wrong I was, which makes you no different from them. Which is why I got angry with you, compounded by the fact you interjected yourself into the situation and have persisted in not letting the matter go by repeatedly replying to me about it. So, now you know why. But... I’m done talking about this. I thought I made that clear before when I said let’s drop it. But in case there was some ambiguity, let me make it perfectly clear now. The conversation is done and over with. Please don’t keep this back-and-forth going- I’m done talking about it. Let’s move on. If you want to have a back-and-forth there’s 100 other people you can do it with besides me. Enough time has been wasted talking about this nonsense, as I said before. Let’s talk m-cable. Or Fire Emblem. Or whatever. But enough of this. All it’s doing is flaring my temper every time you respond. I have no problem forgiving and moving on when people admit what they did with some semblance of remorse or regret. But every time I hear “nobody did that, certainly not I” it’s just ticking me off all over again. The best course of action would be to drop it, and let’s talk some video games.

I haven’t heard any reports of the cable breaking so I don’t think that fear is evidence based. In fact it’ll probably last decades if I had to guess. As for VR, It works for PSVR but you have to hook it up a special way. Most reports said they couldn’t get it to work for PS VR but I read a report of somebody who figured out a way to do it. It’s not really worth it for other modern systems though imo (maybe VR being the exception). This thing was made for Switch. Match made in heaven.

I undocked Fire Emblem and notice a major difference now. I can see tons of jaggie edgelines in handheld that aren’t there when docked, thanks to the m-cable. They’re not a major issue, of course. I’ve enjoyed my Switch for years with no such CXAA. But it is a pleasant upgrade, especially when most games on the system are going to benefit from it.

@EvilLucario
Every time I hear “jaggie” I think Monster Hunter. The Great Jaggi and the little jaggies you fight that look like velociraptors.

@Grumblevolcano
That’s fantastic! The 15fps half frame rate version included in DOOM 2016 just wasn’t sufficient.

@NEStalgia Dude, **** YouTube compression. I follow all the right procedures, I have the right encoding, and all that nonsense, and my videos can STILL LOOK LIKE ASS. Why is YouTube compression so ****ing brutal??? It drives me up a wall when I upload stuff there.

Hell, streaming to Twitch is MUCH CLEANER. HOW??????????

I'm all for trying out Luna Nights from the sounds of it, I'll have to keep an eye out.

I'm definitely not paying 100$ for an antialiasing cable, sorry folks. I can live without antialiasing... though considering my TV is only 720p, that's probably not a surprise.

And meanwhile, I'm super hyped to finally try Doom 2 when it releases on Switch. Only played the original and the reboot so far.

@NEStalgia Light shimmering and jaggies that I don't notice unless someone blows up the size of the image like in a DF video generally don't bother me. I can see, side-by-side, the differences in the images Jax posted, but I don't know that I'd even be consciously aware of the difference if I wasn't looking for it.

Xenoblade 2 undocked, on the other hand, goes so low-res that the characters look like impressionistic smears on the plains of Gormott.

I don't know if what I've seen says this mcable is worth the price, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll keep anything in mind that might make Switch games look better (until we the inevitable 'Switch Pro,' which solve this issue on its own).

@Gamer83
It’s one of those things that, whether it’s worth it comes down to 1 how much the lack of aliasing bothers you and how much having AA increases your enjoyment, and 2 whether or not you feel it’s worth $100

Admittedly, it’s a small difference, and lack of AA has never significantly impacted my enjoyment of a game. That said, it has impacted it on a small scale in some cases (YS VIII comes to mind). If there’s one thing that stands out about games on Switch, it’s the aliasing. So in the absence of a Pro model, this kind of feels like a godsend. A way to improve the image quality across the board (and in handheld mode it’s not needed as much because the smaller screen makes it less noticeable).

It is good to have options. So whether you ultimately decide to go forward or not at least you have the information now to make an informed decision.

@Ralizah
Compared to low res, it’s definitely a small thing. But aliasing, at least for me, has just been one of those minor thorns in my side. It doesn’t stop me from enjoying a game but it is a somewhat minor aggravation. It would be nice if they invented a device that could magically upscale lower resolution to higher res. They’re coming out with all kinds of cool stuff nowadays, like g-sync which still seems like magic to me and addresses framerate issues. Maybe we’ll see a breakthrough in technology for resolution in the near future.

In the meantime, I’ll at least take the CXAA 😁

Deals usually comes around again, so I wouldn't be too concerned if I missed some.

That is my question, if I can make a purchase on my Nintendo account and not have a Switch yet.
