@NintendoByNature I don’t want to put the lite down or sound negative but I’ve also bought a Nintendo switch for my eldest and will buy another but trust me they would want the extra features of the regular switch even if it’s unlikely now they will in the future. Your better off buying a regular switch and selling the dock
We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
@1UP_MARIO Nah. This one has a D-Pad, slightly longer battery life, a more portable form factor, and doesn't have detachable joycon controllers. The "missing features" aren't that big of a deal if someone in your household already has a Switch that can be played on the TV.
I need to try out the Lite first to make sure I enjoy using it, but if it's as cute and comfy a dedicated handheld as I think it'll end up being, I'll be gifting my launch Switch to my nephew and transitioning to this instead.

There’s certainly a market for that price, but I’m not in that market. Would I be if Nintendo allowed more cloud saving and multiple systems to use the same account? Probably. If syncing a Lite and Base were as seamless as logging in to my XBL profile on a friend’s Xbox, I’d be tempted.

@1UP_MARIO Yeah, in that case, it makes sense to not want the Lite.
I really only consistently play docked when gaming with friends, and when playing Xenoblade 2. Otherwise, I'm almost all handheld. But the thing feels a bit... long for my liking in handheld mode. And I hate the D-Buttons.

So stuff like getting Moons in Odyssey is now harder, any game that uses HD Rumble, like Blaster Master, Odyssey, etc for gameplay purposes is now unusable, Super Mario Party and 1-2 Switch, LABO, Snipperclips, and many more are unplayable or lose their main modes outright without separate controllers you cant charge without ANOTHER purchase.
Plus this means docked mode will suffer more going forward, as now there are guaranteed to be more handheld players, so developers will likely prioritise that other docked play. So the mirror matches between handheld and docked we have already seen will be a permanent fixture.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Until Nintendo announces the upgraded version of the stock Switch. Don't forget that two Switch revisions were leaked, the Lite and the Pro/Plus/Switch Two...whatever they decide to call it. The release of the Switch Lite does not signal the end of the core Switch concept.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
@Magician I know its not the end of the core Switch concept.
I'm stating why would someone make something that neuters loads of the games they already made for the system, that they want to sell to more people than the original, that won't be fully enjoyable as intended?

After "New" Nintendo 3DS nothing surprises me.
Still the best place to play SNES virtual console games portably.

Honestly, this is probably the most exciting thing about the Switch Mini. Developers will be going to pains now to ensure parity between docked and handheld, meaning we're hopefully less likely to see gimped ports going forward. It probably also means Nintendo will lean away from doing stuff like making certain moves in Mario games reliant on motion gesturing and HD rumble.

@Ralizah The parity between docked and handheld isn't good.
What I meant is see that 720p lower settings for handheld? More people have that. Focus more on that. Okay now just repeat it 720p lower settings for docked. It's less people.

@Knuckles-Fajita I'll invite you to my Labo Support group. Robot and Swan will be there, with their detachable joycon
I'm just hoping that Nintendo is going to treat the Lite similar to the tablet 2DS; Let it exist but don't really acknowledge it past that.

The very reason why I don't hold Mario Odyssey in the same regard as Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, or Super Mario 3...those moons that require you to use those motion controls for enemy special abilities.
Its shortsighted to pretend there's no value in a Switch Lite. All kinds of false presuppositions to assume a person would care enough about the minuscule number of games requiring Joycon to buy an extra set for the incredibly small percentage of gameplay requiring it (Odyssey has a couple moons requiring it, that's about it, and there's so many moons one could easily skip those and never know the difference).
And that's also assuming a person doesnt care about the smaller form factor or the fact you get 33% more battery life with Zelda (4 hrs vs 3), or a proper d-pad in handheld mode without buying a separate joycon and sacrificing gyro.
Different people value different things. But one thing is for sure. Console gamers are extremely price sensitive, and while most people on an enthusiast site would rather pay more for more features, the bulk of the install base is not enthusiasts. The bulk is price sensitive casual gamers who just want to play Pokemon or Fire Emblem on a handheld.
You best BELIEVE a $200 Switch is gonna set the market on fire, especially this holiday. Smartest move Nintendo's made to date.
