@NEStalgia Oh no! My gamer card already has several black marks on it! Haha!
I mean, maybe I've done GTAO a bit of a disservice - there is a progression system of sorts (the old 'level up by earning XP to unlock better stuff' kind of deal), there are kind of story-ish elements (in the form of GTA style missions/heists which you can complete with others) and a central lobby area (the whole map, shared with up to 31 other players) where you can buy property/cars/clothing and participate in various 'random events' with (or against) others - and a whole bunch of other activities too (everything from playing a round of golf to making a short film!) ..as a bit of a racing fan, I kind of fell in love with the idea of being able to design, create and play my own custom race tracks in a game - the creation tools and driving controls were both pretty tight, so it kind of became a 'create your own Forza' experience for me really - and it felt quite fun (for a while!)
I'd be lying if I said that I regretted stepping away from the game though - the 'game as a service' model (and the grinding/spending habits those types of games encourage) just isn't for me...my only regret is not putting it down sooner!
(The single player is great though! ..hopefully RDR2's will be similarly as good, because I won't be touching RDR2 Online!)
@JaxonH Thanks for sharing that Octopath video! I really enjoyed what I played of the demo, so it was nice to see an update on the progress/refinements they are making!
At least, the rumor from the guy who teased the Labo news on another place, is that there was a big direct planned from January but that some of the things that were to be presented - like online - weren't ready. So, they are saying it would be around middle of February - and it should include info on the next FE game.
Take it with a mountain of salt, though. It is just a rumor after all.
@Luna_110 He hasn't received a reply yet mercifully. Only stated he has plans.
Plans that may we wish fall through.
@Grumblevolcano The only benefit to Meme Run was the knowledge that someone owns and has lawyers assigned to protecting their ownership of the bloody Troll Face.
As for the Direct in February rumour, these are the things happening in Spring we know about but don't have a date for:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 New Game+ (sometime in mid-February)
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 New Rare Blade (sometime in Spring)
FE Warriors Shadow Dragon DLC (sometime in February)
FE Warriors Awakening DLC (sometime in March)
Mario Odyssey update (sometime in February)
Mario + Rabbids story DLC (sometime in Spring)
Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition (sometime in Spring)
Mario Tennis Aces (sometime in Spring)
Add in reminders about games we do know the dates for like Bayonetta 1+2, some known games not shown off yet like Fire Emblem Switch, some unannounced games and important services like online and there's more than enough for a February Direct. Not to mention probably some 3DS announcements to prove Nintendo are still keeping that system alongside Switch for the time being.
Maybe they will announce the virtual console? After all, some chaps identified that the Nvidia Shield that plays GC games on China uses an emulator, developed I assume by Nintendo.
It turns out Sumo Digital aren't making any Sonic Racing games as Sega have confirmed. So does this mean they could be working on something for/with Nintendo or is it, as I'm guessing, all a fabricated by someone?
I could see them potentially wait longer, the free NES games with the paid online service may look lame to people if a normal VC is announced at the same time. Though they could make it that only paid online subscribers can buy VC games or VC being its own paid subscription where you can't buy games separately but rather own all games in the collection until your subscription expires.
Hi all, not sure if this is the best place to post, I’m new to the forum, I’ve had previous Nintendo devices (Wii, 3DS XL, New 3DS) and I finally become a Switch owner the weekend after picking up a bargain!
Looking forward to hopefully chatting to you all and maybe having a few games too!
@Grumblevolcano
I don't see that working out too well that would upset quite a lot to only have access to VC through a subscription service. Like myself I can't get decent internet where I live in a rural area, so subscription services are a definite no no. I'd really like to see a unified VC service so you can purchase games on any system and download it across all of them (ex buy Mario world on 3ds it's can be downloaded on your wiiu and switch no charge under your account, psn does it for vita, PS3, psp and ps4 with crossbuy.)
@GameOtaku
PS did it during 7th gen for some compatible games (and there was a big stink about which games were compatible and which games weren't, and some games would work even though they weren't officially compatible, but they wouldn't let you download them so you had to run them through a cable into your Vita... it was a mess). But PS4 has avoided it entirely by simply not putting any of those games on PSN... at all. Not one single PSone or PSP game that can be downloaded on PS4.
This is often a point brought up by people but it's overstated. They tried it during seventh generation, for a time, but it's not really a thing anymore. They kind of screwed themselves by doing so- they realized they would be working for free because everyone had already bought them on PS3 or Vita. So... they opted to simply not release them at all. They've made it a point to only release games that weren't on PS3/Vita, which really drives the point.
And that is the unfortunate side effect. It puts the company in a situation where they realize developing the game for any current/future systems would result in working for free, and they ultimately decide it's not even worth the trouble, and you just stop seeing those games released at all.
Wii U and 3DS are part of a bygone era. Thankfully, Switch provides the concept of crossbuy on a system level. Even cross system buy- you don't even have to buy two systems- you just buy one system and every game gives you the handheld version (like 3DS or Vita would) and the console version (like Wii U or PS3 would).
The best solution for all interested parties is an upgrade fee. This would prevent us ending up in a situation where they decide to not bring the games at all because they don't want to work for free. While at the same time it would allow gamers to get those games without spending full price. The only catch is, there are other factors in play. And I truly believe they don't want to impact the success of indies and 3rd party games. The Wii U/3DS top 20 was consistently dominated by virtual console, typically at the expense of all non-first party games. The absence of VC thus far has given way to vibrant market for indies and 3rd parties, and I think they value that more than the money they would make selling VC again.
@GameOtaku THIS so much. I don't want a subscription service. I want to actually OWN the games on my console. I feel the same way about music. I don't subscribe to any music services because I want to OWN my music and know it will still be there even if I can't afford to subscribe. Which I definitely would not be able to right now.
Also, the unified Virtual Console is something that I think Nintendo really needs to do. I don't know how practical it is... However, I can never see the Virtual Console as too worthwhile of a service if the purchased games get stuck on one system. I mean, they're digital content. Nintendo working to make sure that you can transfer VC games from old systems to new systems would make for much happier customers, I'm sure. And it would make purchasing VC games worthwhile.
At least the Wii U had Wii backwards compatibility, meaning that I actually have the VC games I got on the Wii on there as well. Although that's not perfect, as it's through a whole different menu and it also requires a different controller because the Wii was annoying like that... At least I know those games are still there!
I'd love to have all of my Virtual Console games on the Switch.
But I know what will happen... Nintendo will press the reset button. And they'll release everything super slowly again, expecting us to pay for it all over again. And we will also wait weeks through releases of Super Mario Bros. and other NES games that have been released five thousand different times to actually get to the titles we want.
@GameOtaku I just don't see a traditional VC service happening especially with the improved relationships between Nintendo and 3rd parties (mostly indies but some bigger 3rd parties too like Square Enix and Bethesda). That's why I think there'll be some major catch. Some minor catch like having to pay for all your VC games individually again won't cut it as lots of people would just rebuy VC games instead of buying 3rd party games, VS Super Mario Bros. being very high in the eshop charts is proof of that (if you own SMB and SMB2 (Lost Levels), there's very little new content in VS SMB).

Problem is that any Wii game could ONLY be played in Wii mode. They were never integrated into the Wii U's system. I'm no programmer, but I doubt they'd be able to simply put everything on the Switch. No one but mobile and PC has done that.
