I don't see that working out too well that would upset quite a lot to only have access to VC through a subscription service. Like myself I can't get decent internet where I live in a rural area, so subscription services are a definite no no. I'd really like to see a unified VC service so you can purchase games on any system and download it across all of them (ex buy Mario world on 3ds it's can be downloaded on your wiiu and switch no charge under your account, psn does it for vita, PS3, psp and ps4 with crossbuy.)
@GameOtaku
PS did it during 7th gen for some compatible games (and there was a big stink about which games were compatible and which games weren't, and some games would work even though they weren't officially compatible, but they wouldn't let you download them so you had to run them through a cable into your Vita... it was a mess). But PS4 has avoided it entirely by simply not putting any of those games on PSN... at all. Not one single PSone or PSP game that can be downloaded on PS4.
This is often a point brought up by people but it's overstated. They tried it during seventh generation, for a time, but it's not really a thing anymore. They kind of screwed themselves by doing so- they realized they would be working for free because everyone had already bought them on PS3 or Vita. So... they opted to simply not release them at all. They've made it a point to only release games that weren't on PS3/Vita, which really drives the point.
And that is the unfortunate side effect. It puts the company in a situation where they realize developing the game for any current/future systems would result in working for free, and they ultimately decide it's not even worth the trouble, and you just stop seeing those games released at all.
Wii U and 3DS are part of a bygone era. Thankfully, Switch provides the concept of crossbuy on a system level. Even cross system buy- you don't even have to buy two systems- you just buy one system and every game gives you the handheld version (like 3DS or Vita would) and the console version (like Wii U or PS3 would).
The best solution for all interested parties is an upgrade fee. This would prevent us ending up in a situation where they decide to not bring the games at all because they don't want to work for free. While at the same time it would allow gamers to get those games without spending full price. The only catch is, there are other factors in play. And I truly believe they don't want to impact the success of indies and 3rd party games. The Wii U/3DS top 20 was consistently dominated by virtual console, typically at the expense of all non-first party games. The absence of VC thus far has given way to vibrant market for indies and 3rd parties, and I think they value that more than the money they would make selling VC again.

@GameOtaku THIS so much. I don't want a subscription service. I want to actually OWN the games on my console. I feel the same way about music. I don't subscribe to any music services because I want to OWN my music and know it will still be there even if I can't afford to subscribe. Which I definitely would not be able to right now.
Also, the unified Virtual Console is something that I think Nintendo really needs to do. I don't know how practical it is... However, I can never see the Virtual Console as too worthwhile of a service if the purchased games get stuck on one system. I mean, they're digital content. Nintendo working to make sure that you can transfer VC games from old systems to new systems would make for much happier customers, I'm sure. And it would make purchasing VC games worthwhile.
At least the Wii U had Wii backwards compatibility, meaning that I actually have the VC games I got on the Wii on there as well. Although that's not perfect, as it's through a whole different menu and it also requires a different controller because the Wii was annoying like that... At least I know those games are still there!
I'd love to have all of my Virtual Console games on the Switch.
But I know what will happen... Nintendo will press the reset button. And they'll release everything super slowly again, expecting us to pay for it all over again. And we will also wait weeks through releases of Super Mario Bros. and other NES games that have been released five thousand different times to actually get to the titles we want.
@GameOtaku I just don't see a traditional VC service happening especially with the improved relationships between Nintendo and 3rd parties (mostly indies but some bigger 3rd parties too like Square Enix and Bethesda). That's why I think there'll be some major catch. Some minor catch like having to pay for all your VC games individually again won't cut it as lots of people would just rebuy VC games instead of buying 3rd party games, VS Super Mario Bros. being very high in the eshop charts is proof of that (if you own SMB and SMB2 (Lost Levels), there's very little new content in VS SMB).

Problem is that any Wii game could ONLY be played in Wii mode. They were never integrated into the Wii U's system. I'm no programmer, but I doubt they'd be able to simply put everything on the Switch. No one but mobile and PC has done that.

@Grumblevolcano
If Nintendo is on such good terms with 3rd parties then why has the 3ds not had any new VC titles in the last 3 years?
As far as classic games hurting new game sales then I say let them. If a classic game outsells a new one then the new game must have been either uninspired or just plain awful. Besides its the consumers choice what they buy I see VC being popular with people like myself who either owned said games originally or never had the chance to do so. The demographic they are aiming for is rather niche either way.
@GameOtaku Strongly disagree there. Those classic games will sell more just on branding alone. An excellent indie game can and will get overlooked in favor of an old game with Mario or Zelda in the name.
I hope I don't need to hold up the Wii U and 3DS top sellers lists from the past god knows how many years to highlight the fact that VC will, does and always will overshadow other releases.

I wonder whether Virtual Console might come in the form of something like this:
sign up to Nintendo Online to get access to an ever-growing library of free-to-download NES/SNES games (with added online mutliplayer in some cases)
sign up to our 'premium' Nint-etflix (working title ) subscription service to access the rest of the back catalog (N64/GC etc)
..with the former almost acting as a 'free' little tasting palette to try to tempt people to sign up for the premium service, perhaps?
Microsoft recently announced a similar 'premium subscription' service for Xbox...and, if Nintendo were to follow suit, I could see a Netflix-style service where you pay a monthly fee to access a range of N64/GC/GBA etc games on-demand being quite attractive for customers - and potentially a good way for Nintendo to monetise their 'legacy content' without perhaps impacting third-parties so much?
@IceClimbers
So what if they do? I don't see that being a big problem. Maybe if the Indy developers would get published by big names like konami, capcom or possibly way-forwarding would make them appear better than most shovelware that I've seen. Don't get me wrong I love Va11 HallA and DSW but for everyone of them there are 20-30 Indy games not worth 2 cents. I'd rather buy the classics first on the eshop then I'll muck through for hidden gems.
Super Mario Odyssey – 9.07 million
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 7.33 million
Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 6.70 million
Splatoon 2 – 4.91 million
1-2 Switch – 1.88 million
ARMS – 1.61 million
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – 1.06 million
You can find the.pdf files with the full report below.
So Mario Kart is already close to Wii U's total sales for the game. It's almost like porting Wii U games to a more successful console help them to reach a new audience or something.
Remember when people were outright saying that there was no way the Switch had sold 3 million in a single month!? Yeah those were the days... as in the past two weeks.
Great news for Nintendo and the Switch! Now, let's see if they can keep up that momentum.
@kkslider5552000 It's also an incredibly cheap and easy way to generate revenue porting games. It's why publishers love to do it.
