The games journalist Chris Scullion has said this on his Twitter, regarding the upcoming announcement:
'Try to temper your expectations a little: a number of my sources tell me it's aimed at children who are maybe 'casual' gamers (hate that term) and it may involve accessories you have to buy. It sounds like it may be a potential money factory (like Skylanders initially was when people cared), but all I'm saying is cool it: it's not the Animal Crossing or Smash Bros you may be expecting, and there's a chance you might think "is that it?" when it just isn't aimed at you. Of course, the "kids at heart" thing suggests it may hopefully still have some sort of gimmick that makes it appeal to adults too. We'll see: I've told you all I know.'
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
I am...concerned about this announcement. I expect a Switch Mini, but Nintendo has that thing where they never do what you expect. Worst case scenario, they could completely ruin the momentum and reputation they got from 2017. Best case scenario, they just talk about their online. Just, please be what I expect for one.
An announcement of something in addition to what we have, whatever it is, won't harm Nintendo. Even if it's Switch Music with fake plastic guitar accessories that do nothing it'll be something to ignore as we play the games they've already announced for 2018. The only way they could lose momentum would be if they announced something wasn't coming to Switch or was delayed. And that's not going to happen with the way they've announced this.
I'm thinking it's probably something like a Nintendogs or Wii Sports sort of deal. Something that nobody in this thread likely cares about much but something that's big enough that they are making a big deal about it. And if it's something like that they're going to gain a LOT of momentum out of it even if we shrug our shoulders and ignore it.

I'm thinking it's probably something like a Nintendogs
"Get closer to your Nintendogs & cats than ever before with our new range of....FURRY JOY-CON!!!"
Haha! Yeah, I agree - a 'new way of playing' would only add another option to what is already a highly flexible and versatile console...the marketing around the Switch has always been focused around showing off the myriad ways you can enjoy playing games on the console - it'll just be myriad+1 ways of playing instead!
Very curious...my nieces almost broke my Joy-Con in rage when playing Overcooked a few weeks ago - so some highly durable (preferably padded and bouncy) 'Kid Joy-Con' would be most welcome from my end! (..heart in mouth stuff watching them kids playing with my precious console! )
Dandara finally gets a release date - 6th February in PAL regions. Given Raw Fury tend to release games simultaneously worldwide, Expect this out in NA & Japan on (or around) that date as well!
Last week a mini-direct (11-1), tonight/tomorrow a 'new play' announcement (18-1), next week another mini direct (25-1)? And subsequently a full direct (1-2)?
Nintendo has big plans for 2018. These succesive announcements each week could fill the 'january game gap'. I really do like all this news of the Switch. Nintendo wants it to be a succes!
Where on earth are you getting this idea of a second mini Direct and a full Direct?
@Harmonie The February direct is from rumours I read on other fora and doing the math (max 20 days after a mini direct is a full direct presented). The second mini direct is just a wild guess because I think that Nintendo will announce something every week till the first of February. Don't pin me on that, it is just wishful thinking!
@Harmonie Yeah, I don't know about the 'second Mini Direct' idea - sounds fanciful - but NL's Alex made a rather convincing case that a 'full' Direct could be just around the corner the other day...
This "new play" thing - any chance it's going to be that Ubisoft Starlink thingy? It's basically another toys-based video game, which is a genre I will never get on board with but I appreciate there is a huge market for.
Hm... I'd say something new involving Amiibo to revitalize them, or maybe... I dunno how they'd even use the IR sensors tbh. Maybe they're bringing back R.O.B?
Continuing yesterday's discussion of download speeds......I played with it yesterday, and tried DLing a demo of some random indie game around 600MB. On wifi it was going at a good clip, 1% a second or so. As soon as I docked it it crawled and took a good 15+ minutes to DL the rest. So it appears like the LAN adapter is either REALLY REALLY slow, or the Switch is intentionally slow when running wired at least for downloads? I wonder if that affects lag in games like Splatoon in any way? I'd be curious if anyone else has done any testing with the eth adapter.
@JonSpangler Not sure why it's not working but if the EU code works you can use it with no worries. My main user account is UK one, my Switch is Japanese but I buy almost all my games using my US user account on the US Eshop and play them with my UK account.
@JonSpangler What region is your Nintendo Account? From what you're saying it sounds like it's from a region which uses an EU store which would explain why EU codes work but NA codes don't.
