The problem with a portable only Switch is that being portable is where the costs/limitations of the switch come from. Basically it wouldn't be much cheaper and it wouldn't have much of an advantage.

I know. But the price that Nintendo charges isn't necessarily a true or scaled reflection of their costs. It's a marketing consideration of how much they think people will be willing to pay for a particular SKU and how effectively they can justify that price.

I think there are 2 components to the question though. Firstly there's the question of just how much can be saved in regards to manufacturing and shipping. Stripping out the dock, the grip and integrating the controls could save more than we are guessing it will.

They could even save cost by doing something that would elicit cries of anguish on this forum... by reducing the internal built in memory from 32 to 16 gb and in doing so making it clear anyone who's serious will pay the premium. It sounds impossible but it's how Apple aggressively won market share with the 8gb iPhone 5c (in every country other than the US).

Secondly there's the question of margin expectations and the price Nintendo wants to sell at. They could swallow their margin expectations slightly for a handheld only Switch or keep the price the same but bundle a digital copy of Mario Kart (which amounts to effectively the same thing).

And of course a pure handheld is something that can be marketed differently and reach a different audience. I'm certain it will happen - it's just a question of when is the right time to do launch it.

A home console only Switch? Well sure. But then you're removing the one thing that makes the Switch different. It's not like having a 2DS, it's more like making a PSTV.

I don't think the ability to take it on the go is the only thing that makes the Switch different though. It's still the only one of the 3 consoles that emphasises motion control (which could matter when Nintendo releases Wii Sports 2018 or whatever) and it's the only one that really emphasises local multiplayer and younger players. Those two things differentiate it to an extent. It wouldn't sell 50 million units on the basis of those 2 things but it would probably sell enough to be worth Nintendo's while at some point in the future.

It would also be - potentially - a very cheap micro-console relative to the PS4 and the XBox One and could differentiate itself on price.

@StuTwo Right?! Just take out the stupid mechanics that make you blow on the controller and whatnot and you have a PERFECT Switch game. It just seems so well-suited to the platform. Shame it'll probably just rot on the Wii U forever.

Yeah. It would be perfect for Switch and resonate incredibly well on the platform but unfortunately I think Nintendo will be loathe to release multiple Mario games in a year and it's probably going to find itself below a 2d Mario of some description in the pecking order.

It simply wouldn't sell as well as "Really, Genuinely NEW Super Mario Bros - we've even changed the graphics honest" will or generate as much excitement in the online bubble as a Galaxy or Sunshine HD remake.

Nintendo says 30% of Switch owners use it mainly without TV dock. No wonder AC adapter's doing well, I guess people use Switch in bedroom.

Glad people seem to be primarily using this as a hybrid, using the system to its full potential.

Thankfully for them, people are using it as intended. Which makes me think we won't see a handheld only or dock only switch for a while if at all

Nah, Zelda was best I ever played, so was Mario, and Monster Hunter is guaranteed best ever. We'll see how Xenoblade comes out but I have no doubt it'll be great, at the very least... same for Fire Emblem which will be HD for the first time ever... finally.

Probably never. There's not much to switch if you can't switch.

I do wonder about future iterations though. I expect switch 2 to be fully backwards compatible, and switch 3 to leave some games behind for switch 1. Also, I won't be expecting any radical new concept for a long while now. This is a horse that needs riding on and an ecosystem that needs nurturing for full benefit.

I like it.

@erv i pretty much agree with everything you said.. all these people talking about a handheld only or console only version.. well the damn thing is called the Switch, could these people think of any better marketing ideas to confuse consumers?
Like i said before, this thing is worth the price and if Nintendo feels the time has come to offer it at a lower price, they only need to drop it $20-30 and at a sub $300 price point something like $269 will be much more attractive to consumers.

I also would bet money on a switch 2 &3 because it's really such a genius device why would they ever try to come up with some different marketing angle like the fail GameCube, wii and wii u...
Graphics technology is advancing so fast the switch2 is just going to be insane.

Finally grabbed a Switch this weekend! The Mario Odyssey bundle was the tipping point for me - love the joycon colour and the red mario case is quite sharp as well. Oh yeah, and the game isn't too bad either...ha.

I've been with my wife for almost 20 years, and this is for sure the first time we've ever gamed together. Mind you, it was only the demo version of Puyo Puyo Tetris, but I'll take it.

I remember watching the initial Switch launch commercial and thinking to myself - "I'm sold on the tablet idea, but I don't imagine myself switching back and forth so often or detaching the joycons for local play". Now that I own it, I totally see the potential in the flexibility.

Nice to be back in the Nintendo universe for sure. I'll dig up the 5 amiibos that I own and start to build my gaming collection. I'm thinking that Odyssey will take me a while to get through, but maybe Arms will be a good complimentary launch game for me.

@Alstil One game I would absolutely recommend if you want to play local multiplayer is Mario kart 8 Deluxe. Even if you got it on the Wii U (Which I did) I still have 40+ hours logged onto it.

@Scrummer Mario Kart is tempting for sure. I did indeed play a lot of it on the Wii U, but it's the type of game that never gets tiring. I know there are new modes, etc...so probably enough to feel a bit re-vamped.

With Microsoft's slogan for the One X being "the world's most powerful console",it would be funny to see Nintendo countering that with a Xmas advertising campaign for "the world's most versatile console". It's cocky but they'd have done something similar in the 90's. It's all too tame and friendly nowadays if you ask me.

To be honest, after the Wii U, I don't think Nintendo should really go out of their way to step on toes. Especially considering Minecraft is one of the system's biggest sellers. Actually, Sony and MS get along fine as far as their public faces go, and it's refreshing. No one needs that silly school yard bully advertising

How cool! My battery ran out yesterday while I was out, and when I got the system charged and running again this morning, Super Mario Odyssey picked up right where it left off, without even closing the software! That's amazing! I can't tell you how many times I've lost progress on the 3DS.

Got married.

@Nicolai Yes, the Switch shutting off before it runs itself entirely out of power so you don't lose progress is one of its best QOL features.
