Personally I think storage is mandatory for any core gamer (which all of us here fall into that category). I had to upgrade my internal HDD on PS4 to 2tb ($100) and then buy a 4tb external HDD once they patched in support ($130). I had to buy a 4tb external HDD for Xbox One ($130), a 200gb microSD for 3DS ($80), a 500gb HDD for Wii U ($60) and a 64gb memcard for Vita ($100).

And for Switch, I just upgraded my 256gb microSD to a 400gb microSD ($250). Obviously price will come down in time, but I wanted to start installing on it now rather than two years from now when it would take several days to transfer all my games. I think a 200gb (maybe 256gb once price falls? Which it will now that 400gb is released) is the best purchase for Switch right now. With the 32gb internal that's 232gb (298gb if using 256gb card), and will be adequate for most people who, unlike me, don't buy nearly as many games.

There are a few AAA games that demand considerable space but those are the exceptions, not the rule. You can buy every single first party game released to date digitally and only take up around 30gb, give or take. Then you don't have to worry about anything you purchase.

@JaxonH Wish i had that kind of money to burn. Have a Wii U, used a 500GB drive that I had lying around from an old job that let me keep several drives. Switch, 32GB microSD in it that I poached from my 3DS before selling it and threw it in there. I personally don't mind waiting a few hours to transfer to a bigger card when the prices drop in a few years. I'll just start the transfer and go leave to do some errands, play with my kids, etc. just my take on the matter.

Your storage just for gaming is more than my entire storage setup. Currently I have:

3DS: 16GB microSD card which I have upgraded twice and is now full again (3DS is EOL so meh)
Wii U: 500GB HDD which cost "nothing" because it was a spare (and along with the Wii U is now in a box)
Switch: 64GB microSD Card, was cheap and hard to ignore when I was paying shipping anyways
PC: 120GB SSD for boot/apps, 250GB SSD for games I play a lot, 1TB HDD for everything else
Mass storage: 2TB NAS (which I plan to expand), 3TB portable backup
Phone: 32GB microSD for music (of which I rotate ~20GB of my ~40GB collection)

There is no transfer process. That's the issue. Gotta download game by game.

Well keep in mind all my storage wasn't bought at once. It was over a period of 5 years. When I got the 2tb drive for PS4, I took it out of its casing and replaced with the stock 500gb from PS4. That became my Wii U external. And I do believe my 200gb for 3DS was already purchased. Even now I have a spare 256gb microSD, couple 128gb and at least 3 external HDD, of various sizes up to 2TB.

I also have a 512gb SD (normal SD, not micro) in my Wii U to house my GameCube and Wii collection digitally. Plus Wii U can't play my GC discs anyways so it's necessary to access my collection in HD.

But ya, storage is something I don't like to compromise on. Those Solid State drives are super nice though. My PC has a 250gb SSD but I leave that for OS and the like. Games all go on the normal 3TB HDD.

Wish I had a nice big 2TB SSD but that would be crazy expensive

@JaxonH I generally find Kirby games to be boring and samey, but Planet Robobot had an irresistible charm and originality to it. YWW was also wonderful, what with its wonderful level design and cohesive aesthetic and mechanics. Unfortunately, neither of these two new Kirby and Yoshi games inspire much confidence in me. Kirby had gone back to being bland, and the Yoshi game seems all over the place... the model looks similar to the one in YWW, but there's more of a paper look to the environments, and you... throw eggs at objects in the background? I'm really not feeling it.

What do you think about Hollow Knight? That game is releasing on Switch this year. I'm still getting back or updates and they said they're getting pretty close to finishing this version. I wish it were getting a physical release but I don't think it is.

It's supposedly fantastic though. Like, Ori and the Blind Forest level of awesome.

While Yoshi and Kirby are good games they pail in comparison to what we got this year. BotW, MK8D, ARMS, Splatoon 2, Pokken, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade!! I would much rather have all those long before Kirby and Yoshi. Nintendo will need at least 4 to 5 serious 1st or 2nd party games next year to keep this momentum going.

Retro needs to shine next year, Pikmin 4, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Fire Emblem and whatever else Nintendo has up their sleeves. I still say we are getting a new Luigis Mansion next year. I think it's already done but they're holding it back for next year because this year is so full. Nintendo is more inclined to shock these days so I wouldn't be surprised to see Kid Icarus Uprising 2 or something.

Fire emblem was confirmed for 2018 I thought? Outside of Yoshi and Kirby we also have No More Heroes, Octopath Traveler, Wolfenstein 2 and I feel like one of Pokemon/Metroid will be the big holiday title. Pikmin 4 is also a high probability with it being declared almost finished. I don't think you have to worry. Also, they did say they are focusing on short-term releases during E3 and the latest directs

@rk3388 I don't know how anyone can think Metriod and Pokemon is coming next year. We didn't get gameplay for any of them, just a title and a confirmation.

We didn't get any gameplay for Fire Emblem, yet that was confirmed for 2018.

Plus, when Pokémon was announced, he specifically stated "this will take us at least a year to complete". Well, that was in June 2017. One year puts it at June 2018. So a holiday release (November 2018) gives it 50% more time than Nintendo estimated was needed.

I can see 2018 having plenty of games even if the majority would be 3rd party. I mean that is Nintendo's strategy right? Make a big impact the first year by releasing one of the highest quality first party line-up ever to attract people to the platform. And the rest will follow.

As for pikmin 4, I think it's done. It's not a system seller so you release it after the ones that do. But I also think that it looks to similar to Mario+rabbids, the exploring section that is. Nintendo is a very visual company and don't like their games to look similar, they need to stand out.

But anyway, even if next year doesn't have as much games. This year has to many. So I think I'll be alright.

@JaxonH Here's the thing, that's first-party, and I am equally interested in third-party. So I'll take the physical route as much as I can, to save on storage and not be forced to buy an SD card.

@skywake @JaxonH My setup for storage is:
3DS - 32GB micro SD card (more than enough for the downloads I've made, in fact some of the downloads I wanted physical but ended up with digital due to free game promotions)
Wii U - 2TB HDD (went way over the top on this one though to be honest I expected the Wii U to have a larger lifespan than a measly 4 years)
Switch - Nothing (Still have quite a significant amount of system memory left and don't care about games like NBA 2K18 which require a micro SD)
XB1 - 2TB HDD (This has lasted me more than I expected it would, still have around half the space left though I do expect most if not all of it to be used up by the time Microsoft releases a successor which I think is still many years away)

@JaxonH The actual quote was a bit different, and to me it sounds like it could very well be years away.

GameFreak has begun developing a core RPG Pokémon title on Nintendo Switch. It may not release for more than a year, but we hope you look forward to it all the same.

There's also this interview with Game Informer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgAbM7s8CdY It could be a late 2018 title, but the way they talk about the project, I won't be surprised if it turns out to be a late 2019 title. It's been a while since they've had a break between their annual releases, and this project sounds bigger than anything they've done before.

MFD

@Octane It makes sense, since they're dealing with quite the hardware shift from 3DS to Switch. In any case, I hope they're taking their time with this. I'd rather it comes out late, than comes out and has many issues.

I think the best approach with storage in general is to just follow two simple rules. Only buy more storage when you run out of space and try to buy cards with the lowest $/GB possible. Only spend more per GB if you're buying less storage and are absolutely sure you will never need any more. It's just a way to minimise the amount of money you're spending given that storage is always getting cheaper.

Think about it, why buy a 250GB MicroSD card for about $1AU/GB now when you can just sit on your hands and wait for the price to drop? If you do chew through the Switch's 32GB this year? Buy a 64GB card for $0.50AU/GB and have that last you into 2019 at that rate. By then the 250GB card will be cheaper, lets say it's now at $0.50AU/GB also. All up you've spent $150AU instead of $250AU and you have an extra 32GB card you can use somewhere else!

@JaxonH I've never played Hollow Knight, but I've heard some pretty fantastic things about it, so i'm eager to try it. Same with Stardew Valley. And, if I'm being honest, I'm still looking forward to Yooka-Laylee: even in its rough, unpatched PC form, it was pretty fun.
