@Octane What would you name as a platform game then? Personally, games with a strong co-op multiplayer component are a "platform" for me, one that I'd get again, akin to Xenoverse 2.
@UmniKnight Evergreen sellers that perform well for the duration of the console's lifespan and games that get regularly updated with new content. And yes, these are all multiplayer games in some way, shape or form. Think Mario Kart, Smash, but also Overwatch, Minecraft and Rocket League. But FIFA? No, EA doesn't care about last year's FIFA as soon as a new one comes out.
@Octane Fair enough. I hope we get more of these platform games then. There are quite a few PvP games by now, but not as many co-op, sadly.
The other longevity games I can think of, would be games with random generation elements, like Heroes of Might and Magic and how you can generate the map, travel around, find different things etc. Something with elements that are not set in stone, yet fun to explore multiple times all the same.
To me a "platform" is a game that is well supported until the next game arrives but when that next game arrives, at least most of the contents playable in the old game are playable in the new game. Perfect example is the Rock Band franchise.
The first game came out in November 2007, had a base setlist and weekly DLC. When Rock Band 2 came out in September 2008, the DLC from the first game was playable in this new game and you could also export most of the first game's setlist (only Enter Sandman, Paranoid and Run to the Hills didn't export).
Weekly DLC continued and all songs from future spinoff games in the RB2 era except The Beatles Rock Band were playable in RB2 (Lego Rock Band and Green Day Rock Band exported, the Rock Band Unplugged exclusives were released as DLC for RB2).
When Rock Band 3 came out in October 2010, only some RB2 songs weren't playable (the HMX songs, Battery, Let There Be Rock, Any Way You Want It, Spoonman, Give It Away) of which the HMX songs were free DLC for everyone in January 2011 and the last 2 songs got relicensed for Rock Band Blitz in 2012 (RB Blitz was fully exportable). Only 4 non-disc songs weren't playable in RB3 of which 2 of them (Dani California, Black Hole Sun) were made playable after an update in late 2011. Weekly DLC continued throughout the whole of RB3's lifespan until April 2013 when the franchise went on hiatus. In 2015, 6 songs were released as DLC before announcing Rock Band 4 for current gen consoles.
Rock Band 4 released in October 2015 and while entitlements have been taking awhile the goal is the same. Rock Band 3 fully exported to RB4 in December 2015 and Rock Band VR's soundtrack has been a significant part of RB4's DLC since March 2017. Nearly 10 years of Rock Band all in one place and will probably carry on this path for years to come.
The closest fit to this which would work for Nintendo's multiplayer games is the enhanced port model. So like on the Switch's successor you'd have Mario Kart 8 Super Deluxe which features all the content of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and all its DLC (assuming it gets any) as well as adds some new content both on disc and as DLC. Same with Smash Bros.
First half of 2018 I expect Wolfenstein II, Project Octopath Traveler, Kirby Star Allies, Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Super Smash Bros. Deluxe. 6 great games for 6 months + a continuing flood of interesting indies + a few more Triple AAA 3rd Parties.
I think, Super Smash Bros. Deluxe is the next Wii U port in line, only to sell the 60+ Smash amiibos again.
I double dip if it
features all Wii U and all 3DS content (I never got the 3DS version and I really miss the Magicant stage in the Wii U version)
includes all Wii U and 3DS DLC (I never got any DLC, just way too much, way too expensive, and all that useless costume stuff shoudl be free! They should have made a 19,99€ Expansion Pass and be done with it!)
It just said 2018 iirc. Either way, it's coming next year. Which is good enough for me. I'll need a year anyways to catch up on Monster Hunter XX, Mario Rabbids, Metroid Samus Returns, MH Stories, Mario Odyssey, Skyrim, DOOM, Wolfenstein 2, LA Noire, Resident Evil Revelations 1/2, Xenoblade 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Rocket League, Rayman Legends (which feels really great on Switch handheld mode by the way), DB Xenoverse 2, Nights of Azure 2, FIFA 18, Pokken Tournament, Kirby, Yoshi, and Monster Hunter World.

On the other hand EA does develop it as a platform in the same way as other publishers develop their own 'platforms', within the year it is played and invested in just like the others I mentioned and the majority of players move over quickly to the next version. The biggest difference is that their distribution model for expansions is rolled into buying a new boxed copy.
@JaxonH Yep. By and large I expect 2018 will be spent playing catch up with all of the fantastic games released this year. on PS4, 3DS, and Nintendo Switch.
So apparently Super Mario Odyssey being 5.7GB means it doesn't have much content and will be a bad game because the filesize is so small compared to "real games".
Ah internet. How I wish you were less noisy.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Neither Kirby nor Yoshi look interesting to me, so I'm banking on Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and Fire Emblem releasing in 2018!
Of course, there's always the possibility that we could get a lot of third party releases next year. If Bloodstained releases, I'll definitely nab that. Same with Wolfenstein II.
@JaxonH Fair enough on that video, but the buy digital part is hard to do when Nintendo themselves ship the Switch with what is very little memory, third-parties don't compress their files, and SD cards may be cheap, but can just as be that bit extra that people can't easily afford.
Unfortunately I think it's fair to say Overwatch isn't coming. Blizzard kinda ruled that out already and I doubt that will be changing. Hearthstone I could see coming over but then this is something you can get on your iPad so you could just play it on there instead.
We've seen enough about faces in the last couple of months to make me think anything is possible. I wouldn't rule it out. With that said Overwatch for me is one game I don't really have any desire to play on the go. Sure its tone fits Nintendo and it's a huge game but for me personally? It's the sort of game I want to play when I have a decent block of time to fill, a stable internet connection and a KB/Mouse.
I don't think it's impossible I just personally don't think it's that good a fit.
FIFA is hardly a "platform". New games come out every single year and they're not even supported by DLC. Those games don't exist to live for an entire generation. A year at most, until the new one comes out.
I get your point and you're right but I don't think it changes anything. It doesn't make FIFA not a "platform" it just means it has an annual fee. A new sports game isn't a new game in the same way that a new Zelda or Tomb Raider is. It was a discussion about what we as fans would be happy with not what publishers actually do.
As a fan of Smash Bros I don't really care if I don't get Smash Bros 5. Smash Bros 4 worked fine, give me that on the Switch and throw in a couple of extra stages/characters. Done and done. Me saying that's what I want would be the equivalent of a FIFA fan saying "just update the roster, I don't care if it's the same game I just want to be able to play FIFA on my new toy"
@Ralizah
Ya know, I loved Yoshi's Wooly World, but this new one just doesn't have me that excited. That could change in time and I'll still buy it and check it out because I'm sure it's going to be a quality game regardless and we need more quality 2D platformers on the system. But Kirby looks really good I think. I loved Planet Robobot, despite losing interest in Triple Deluxe.
2018 will, in addition to Kirby and Yoshi, surely see Pikmin 4 and Smash, Fire Emblem, probably Pokémon (as the big holiday title), Wolfenstein 2, Dragon Quest Builders and maybe Dragon Quest Builders 2, Octopath Traveller, maybe Dragon Quest XI, and I'm sure a boatload of titles we don't know about yet. There's a lot of third-party titles in the works from those initial Switch partners. I'm expecting a Dark Souls trilogy, a Tales game, more from Capcom, we still have No More Heroes and Shin Megami Tensei V, and obviously more from Nintendo (there very well could be an Animal Crossing).
