So I did not see a dedicated thread about this game so I created this one

Some of you may know that I really love physical games and the ability to play from start to finish just from the game physical media.

I got in touch with Obsidian and asked them if the whole experience is on the cartridge. Here is the support email that they sent me.

"Hello Nikolay,

Thank you for your interest in The Outer Worlds! From what we've been told from the dev team at Virtuous, the game should be playable from start to finish without the need to download any extra content. That being said, the first patch to come out is supposed to have some quality of life changes and fixes as well as graphical enhancements and some bug fixes that were unable to get into the cartridges in time before they started manufacturing them.

So yes, you should be able to play the whole game without the patch, but we do recommend downloading it at the soonest convenience.

Thanks again for reaching out to us about this and I hope you enjoy The Outer Worlds!

As you can see this is a happy news for weirdos like me!

Also a good way to start the thread

I'm really interested in this game. I'm actually not super familiar with most of these guys' games tbh. But something about this game grabbed me since I first saw it, and it just seems like something I would love (and I rarely go against the opinion that a highly rated single player game is great).

I think because I love the Elder Scrolls games I played. But Betheda's other big series, Fallout, doesn't interest me because of the setting. But people I trust say Obsidian's Fallout games are more interesting than Bethesda's (don't tell my brother whose favorite game is Fallout 3 :V). And now Obsidian's new highly rated game seems like a setting I'd like more than EITHER Elder Scrolls or Fallout.

I'll probably grab this. Looks pretty good.

@Zuljaras The way NL's release date article was worded, it sounded like the cart could be playable without the 6 GB high res patch, but they didn't directly address that (maybe info was too scarce). Thank you for confirming this!!!

@Zuljaras Thanks for looking it up! If the port turns out fine performance wise, I will get it day one.

I’m undecided but tempted to get this. I fancy something a little outside of my comfort zone / usual gaming diet. And quality open world games are still reasonably rare on Switch. I hope the port turns out well.

Outer Worlds is in Coming Soon section of eshop NA, release date June 5. The odd thing is, file size says 9.5 GB. That has to be an error. I thought this was going to be a big one, like 40 GB.

EDIT: Maybe I'm thinking of Bioshock collection file size. I thought Outer Worlds was a big game, though. Is it not?

I don't what the file size is but Zelda BOTW is only 13gb so file size doesn't automatically equate to game size. Generally things like textures end up taking loads of space so more realistic looking games like Witcher end up being 40gb+ as opposed to Nintendo's cartoony looks and smaller game sizes. Outer Worlds has a brighter pallet so maybe that's it but 9gb does seem small though.

I hope this port turns out OK. It'll be really cool to have a fully portable Fallout-esque game to play.

@Ralizah I skipped the ps3, ps4 generation, and never played fall out. So, this will be a very new experience for me. I hope it's a good functioning port, too.

What's this about? I thought the game was now going to be on a cartridge, but this listing is claiming no cartridge is included and it's just a download code. Have I missed something...? I preordered this under the belief that the game would now be on a cartridge!

Edit: Hmm, so Amazon's listing just says a download is required, so it could be that Simplygames listing is out of date, but it does appear that the whole game may not be on the cartridge (apologies if I have missed some news that clarifies all these details)

Edit again: Sorry for wasting anyone's time: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/03/the_outer_worlds_ge...

@Reprise Well it must be a mistake on Amazons listing as I asked the publisher and they contacted the devs at Virtuous and they confirmed that the game is playable from start to finish just from the cartridge.

Reprise

@Zuljaras Yeah, sorry about that, it does look like you're right from my second edit. It sounds like the game is playable from start to finish from just the cartridge, but there is a 6gb patch (not that unusual), which does include higher quality textures, which is a much better compromise than the recent 2K games.

Loved it on the PS4. Tempted to pick this up and play through it again in handheld mode on the go, on the switch!

Saw someone playing the switch version on youtube. The graphics are very meh(maybe the texture pack will improve it),load times are long and framerate chugs down to the 20’s during fights.

My copy arrived, just downloading the patch at the moment. Hopefully will give it a go later today after finishing work.

The reviews are in and myself and many others are gutted to discover the Switch port is pretty awful. The 1080p resolution claim was false, which is fine, but this is one of the blurriest games I’ve seen this generation, to the point where you have to stand right in front of a sign to even attempt to make out what it says; docked mode is poor in this regard, but handheld mode is apparently so distorted that you have to squint sometimes to decipher what you’re viewing. Many characters look like jagged plastic and even characters wearing masks with smiling faces depicted on them are pixellated messes. The game will randomly stop with a buffering sign to load content, whether it’s to suddenly load groups of NPCs metres away, or hordes of powerful enemies out of nowhere where it actually impacts your experience and models and textures can sometimes take 10 seconds to ditch their blurriness. The framerate judders all the time, the load times are often above one minute and the gyro controls don’t feel accurate or satisfying. I’m absolutely distraught to discover this, because Virtuos has had such a fantastic track record with Dark Souls Remastered and Starlink, and I really wanted to play this one, but it seems somewhat close to unplayable and I’m praying for a day one patch. However I doubt a patch could fix all of this. I’d be fine with a mostly consistent 30fps and partially fuzzy visuals, but for now, it’s truly a shame how bad this port turned out. The fact they got the game to run at all is an amazing feat in and of itself, but whether it was ultimately worth it in the end is questionable.
