After being pushed back due to issues surrounding the coronavirus outbreak, The Outer Worlds finally has a solid release date on Nintendo Switch. You'll be able to get your hands on the game both physically and digitally from 5th June.
As you may remember, the physical version of the game was initially planned to release with a digital download code in the box, rather than a cartridge. Thankfully, that decision was overturned, and the physical release arriving in June will indeed now have a cartridge as you'd expect.
The retail version will be receiving a day-one patch, however, which will take up an extra 6 GB of space. The patch will "optimise gameplay, provide additional hi-res textures, and include other fixes to provide the employees of Halcyon with the best gameplay experience", so you'll want to make sure you've got enough space on your system or on a microSD card to install the update.
The game will retail for $59.99 / €59.99 / £49.99 / AUD 89.99 when it launches this June. Will you be getting it? Tell us below.

Really? 6GB? That makes an article? Borderlands, BioShock and XCOM 2 are going to take up WAY more than a day one patch.
I feel like I’ve been clickbaited...
Good game but played it on Xbox one already. If you love the fallout series I recommend checking it out. Still amazed that they're bringing it to the Switch!👍🏼
So why on Earth is the patch not on the card? They have plenty of time
Now we wait for Doom Eternal!
Glad we're getting a proper physical copy now.
My release schedule for the year is starting to look real busy.
Tempted between this or the borderlands collection, going for digital anyway so the update will probably not increase the game size at all I hope
Brilliant. Good to see Obsidian/MS and Virtuous are keeping things manageable... something you think T2 could easily learn about.
Also... GTA. Where is it?
@carlos82 Usually production pipelines, they want to get the product on shelves or in people's hands sooner, and during that production process they continue to develop any finishing touches or polish.
The initial physical batch can usually be considered a complete product, but might lack online features, general improvements and fixes, maybe some small amount of content, etc, so you don't miss out on much, but it does mean a lack of preservation in the event of digital services going offline.
I don't mind being told there is a download. And 6 GB is much better than the 30-plus of a download-only game.
At least they are being upfront about it. Somehow I missed that Mortal Kombat 11 required a 20-plus GB download (or I never would have bought it).
@progx I don’t see it so much as click bait. The main point of the headline was that the release date was announced and that is addressed in the first paragraph.
6GB isn't too absurd at least. This was going to be a hard pass for me when they were going to just release a code in a box but it went back on my maybe list when they decided to do a proper physical release. Not sure if I'll get it or not though, depends what I'm playing at the time and stuff.
@progx how is this clickbait? We didn't know it was coming June 5th and we also didn't know that the game was receiving a day 1 update. How this has anything to do with the other games you mentioned is beyond me, far out tbh.
@Grahamthecracker That's because you're a smart human being.
This is fake! They wanted to avoid cartridges, now they make them so small that only low-resolution textures are included. In fact, all they want now is to avoid the ugly sticker „Additional download required“.
@RupeeClock true but they do seem very specific about what it does suggesting the game could even be finished, it kind of sounds like they just want to use a smaller cart if I'm honest. Even the Panzer Dragoon team are adamant that the patch their bringing will be on the physical cartridge
still should not be $60/£50 when you can get it for so much cheaper on other consoles
@progx The headline noted that a patch was coming, not because of its size, but to share the news of the content that patch provides.
If we'd have written it like 'The Outer Worlds Has SHOCKING Day-One Patch, You'll Never Believe How Many GB It Is', then I'd understand, but our headline is as matter-of-fact as we could possibly have made it.
@progx How does that make sense when the title was mostly about the release date and in no way implied the patch was a big deal or large in size?
On topic, I played this on PS4 for a while and got bored. It's a very slow game to sit in front of the TV and watch for hours, but I think I'll get it again for Switch. It'll be much easier to play casually while my gf watches TV.
@carlos82
Calling it a patch is just another word for the fact that they couldn't fit the entire game on the card, problably because they are aiming at something in line of 8GB, compared to CD Project Red that gave us a full 32GB cartridge.
Fair enough. Read too much into the sub-headline, which made me think it was going to be another big one.
Very happy for the June 5th date. Enjoyed it on Game Pass, so I’ll be buying it on the Switch.
I'd rather they clarified the full download size, but maybe the eShop page will arrive soon. Hot damn, though, a week after XCDE, Bioshock and Borderlands... for all I know, Ubisoft may decide to jam Gods & Monsters into the same vicinity next. Some of this may well have to wait until July.😅
@KBuckley27 Russian PS Store lists something along the lines of $45. While 15 bucks can make their own meaty purchase on eShop, I don't know if I would call this "so much cheaper" as far as big releases go.
Gonna get this and Xenoblade. Everything else can wait for price drop.
Looking forward to this!
@RasandeRose Um the Witcher 3 just had a “graphical patch” (well it was more that that but main feature) you know that right ? It added a ton of features that aren’t “on the cart”.
Finally! Hope this port is good!
FYI everyone I played this on PS4 and literally could not get through it - the game is terribly, terribly boring. Truly just so boring. I wanted it love it and simply could not. I would not spend your money on this.
@thechetearly Would seem majority disagree. This game is highly praised.
Outer Worlds will be my next RPG game for Switch. Kinda tired of JRPG:s right now, so this one feels like a good game to go with once Im done with Witcher 3.
@mousieone
As long as all the content is playable on cartridge, its just fine that they put additional languages and such stuff as downloadable.
@mesome713 for sure! That's why I bought it Haha
this game is definitely not worth that much precious space
5th June, yes! I expected to get it within the first half. So happy (and 6gb is the usual)
Now we need news of Doom Eternal release date!
That’s a bit later than I was hoping for but I’m glad that it’s on cartridge! 6 GB update? Psh.. I think Smash Bros has had close to that that’s not bad. With this, Ninjala, 51 Games, Borderlands, and Bioshock that’s a very hectic week of releases for me.
As long as the full game is on the cart, this is ok
@carlos82 There could be plenty of reasons:
-they have a production schedule for the cartridge, which they would not catch if the want to finish the patch first
-initially it was a "code in a box" release. Due to the customer complaints, they changed theit idea --> initially they could work on the patch basically until one day before release. This combined with the first point will make it impossible to put it on the catridge
-limited space, as we don´t know the exact download volume, yet
@RasandeRose So how is The Outer Worlds any different that the Witcher 3? It sounds like the game is playable without the patch just not attractive...
So close!
If they allow us to play the full game from cart albeit with lower-res textures.
Glad they at least went physical. I'll be grabbing this since my June is wide open gaming wise and this looks interesting.
This is a patch right? Not a requirement to play? I only want to be able to finish the game just from the cart.
It will probably be cheaper in the shops, and physical won't waste as much space on my microsd card.
@progx
Doom was 14gb plus 8gb additional
@Zuljaras
A requirement if you want better graphics, as said.
Ah! June 5!?? Man, I wasn't expecting that much of a delay. Totally understand the virus outbreak impact, though. Tired of saying it's name already.
If i read it right, the article wording leaves the possibility that the Outer Worlds cart will still be playable to some extent, without a download? I guess we'll see.
@PALversusNTSC You can play without better graphics.
I read in other article that the full game is on the cartridge.
Then I will definitely pick this up! I doubt that 2K will reconsider their dumb physical releases but it will be fantastic to see Bioshock on a tiny cartridge.
@PALversusNTSC See response #21. I focused on the subheading of the article and not the headline. Also, 6GB for a game like this one isn’t as big as some other; including Doom as you mentioned.
In fact, I think Outer Worlds is pretty close to Witcher in terms of a complete package on the card. Kudos to their Switch team for finding a way to keep less on our SD cards.
Again, day one purchase for me. It’s a fun game.
Nice, high rez textures! Looking forward to that!
@graysoncharles given their delay didn't have a release date nor was the physical version announced until after said delay, I see no reason why they couldn't have just waited until it was ready and not require a 6GB download.
As for going gold it's not usually that far ahead, Final Fantasy VII went gold a little over a month before its release date
I forgive you @progx ❤️❤️
On another article, I was stressed the other day, and totally missed a point that half the article addressed.
@carlos82 the delay was because no one was working...
@KBuckley27
That isn’t how it works . It’s never been how it works.
@ryancraddock
Please start doing headlines like that. That cracked me up. 😊
"ANIMAL CROSSING: Grandmother, 78, caught a Golden Trout using this weird trick."
@carlos82 I suspect that the game will be on a 16GB cartridge and it will be close to full, If they add the patch they will have to use 32GB and that will cost them more. So they made a tough choice.
@Ooyah ever seen theonion's Nintendo stories? If you go on their site and search "Nintendo" they've made a lot of funny Nintendo stories/headlines, click bait style.
June 5th! Ugh, I was hoping they were going to release in April. I'll be tired of video games by the time we're allowed to leave our holes. Love from San Francisco
When is doom eternal out 😫
They still had time to get a 32gb card, why aren't they doing that? A lot of things could be done in two months.
@progx did u miss the new release date?
Glad to get a release date for this one. Don't mind the 6GB patch, just happy we're getting the game physically now.
@progx It's news, my guy. Not a complaint.
I'm happy about it because this hopefully means the game is actually intact-on-cart without the download (unlike the 2K games)
@mousieone I know that, I'm not talking about why it was delayed but in that extra time they announced the physical version and it's still over 2 months away, so I don't see why a day 1 patch would exist now and not able to be on the physical release
@carlos82 that is assuming the warehouse producing the cart would have enough time to produce a new copy and distribute it under the conditions. I guess they could.
@mousieone it just seems early to be already printing carts, perhaps these take longer than discs as I only seem to hear about those going gold a month or so in advance
A 6GB "patch"? What the hell!
Didn’t LA Noire do a similar thing on 360? You had to install one of the disks to the HD for better graphics - or am I making this up? Getting old... Lol.
Excited for this though, I enjoy the gameplay of fallout games, but prefer this kind of setting. No day 1 purchase for me, that’s the Mrs birthday!
Hoping handheld is decent and I'll bite! Hoping to have played new vegas by then, though no lockdown time off for me so who knows!
Glad we have a release date, I plan on getting the game but it's going to have to get in line behind Xenoblade Chronicles so it might be a while before I get around to it.
I am cautious because this game is a week after Xenoblade and they are both huge RPGs. But I love to see a physical release for a title I am skeptical of. I want to be able to sell it back if it’s just not my thing
I'd rather them hold back a physical release till after the patch is done and release with the patch included. It irks me that I bring a new game home with no internet service at all and as soon as I put it in it says a update is available. Meaning they sent out a game knowing a patch would be coming.
Glad I have plenty room on my micro sd card.
Bioshock, Borderlands, Xenoblade and now this all within a week of each other?? Gonna be a great week for gaming!
@mike_intv
Ouch! That’s a lot! Right now my largest games are Doom and Wolfenstein 2, sitting at around 20-22gb each. Next is South Park: TFBH at around 18-20gb.
I'll be getting this no doubt. But when I play it is questionable. Xenoblade will probably still be my life at that point.
Guessing its a 16g cart, 6g download. Not bad. The current download on PSN is 20.49g. Guessing they put as much on the cart as possible while within costs. This kind of move, I can live with. What 2K is doing, not so much.
Also, been pre-ordered on Amazon for months. This should tide me over plenty.
If it releases near the beginning of June, considering that Borderlands, Bioshock and XCOM collections as well and Xenoblade all launch near the end of May, I don't think our wallets and our personal time will survive the onslaught.
I buy!! Oh YESS I BUY!
@Kang81 The 6 GB patch does not scare me — if the reviews are good.
@mike_intv
Yeah, I’m ok with that as well. I have a 3+ GB download for the Witcher 3 on Switch, so for an update I’m ok with it.
I’m not ok with publishers putting the majority of a physical edition copy as a digital download though. At this point, if the entire game isn’t going to be on the cart, minus the standard day 1 patch, then don’t even release a physical copy.
