For extended battles use truffles, raddishes or durians. The kind of rare ingredients that greatly increase vitality, not the common varities.

Cook five of 'em together and you'll make a meal that fully heals you and adds 20 yellow hearts.

Adding one to other recipes also usually makes them fully heal you and add some hearts.

@Meowpheel Thanks for the tip I've just been eating them raw.

I didn't use any online help and I'm slow and dimwitted so I didn't understand how to cook until after I completed all shrines on the plateau. I didn't realize you had to hold the items and then the "Cook" option would appear. I assumed at some point it would teach me so I didn't need to cook yet. I barely made it to the snowy area shrine by using a torch and then when it extinguished I had to eat raw food to survive.

@NEStalgia The timing to activate flurries is indeed quite strict in most circumstances. Another thing you have to consider, though I haven't properly tested, is that your dodges don't give any invincibility like in Monster Hunter, Dark Souls (...ironically) or Bayonetta (they certainly don't in previous Zeldas). Basically, don't try to dodge a wide swing with a side-hop. Unlike the third game in that list, though, flurries are far from necessary to succeed. It's just a bonus if you have good timing.

I think now that the sheen has worn off, the game falls into similar pitfalls that most open world games fall into. Side quests are rather bland, the tower things, say it's "go anywhere whenever you want" but there are barriers to deter you such as super strong enemies or environmental hazards, and of course the long stretches of nothing.

But, to be more positive, they made the world very beautiful so even just walking through empty space has its merits. The environments are rather varied, which is a big plus in my book. The snow areas look and feel much different than the tropical spots in the south of the map, for example.

The towers sometimes have puzzles to get around the Ganon Goo.

And the korok puzzles, while very simplistic, serve to fill out what would have been otherwise empty masses of land.

There's still much room for improvement, but for their first truly open world game, Nintendo did an extremely fine job.

Still prefer skyward sword, though.

Finally beat my first Lynel! It was pretty easy when i got how to dodge, did like 5 consecutive flurry on him then! Now i understood that it's not a gear thing, it's how you engage things. Gonna change this for guardians too, so i hope to beat one when i will encounter it

I beat the one on the Thunder Mountain near Zora Domain

Took all quests i found in the village and tomorrow i'll start explore the zone!

I feel like one of the things the game did well is making it so you can go anywhere you like. You can literally (and easily) beat any enemy in this game by taking a strong enough weapon, which are scattered everywhere, and by being decent at dodging. At that point, you can easily traverse the whole land, and the game doesn't punish you for dieing, so you lose nothing for going to the tougher regions.

The environmental conditions are really not difficult considering that the materials to circumvent them are easily accessible and are just lying about in the areas that you just so happen to need them. The elixirs and benefits also last a good amount of time as well.

Does anyone else understand how this game does enemy and weapon level scaling? Is it just story completion or...?

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

I think stronger enemies and weapons unlock as you get the divine beasts.

I noticed many of the weapons I found started getting boosts after the third one, and after the fourth one I started finding silver bokoblins around.

@Meowpheel I've been avoiding most of the divine beast quests. I did one just because it was my treat for doing so many towers and shrines and I figured I was heading into areas I probably wasn't supposed to be ready for yet so I might as well see if anything special happens after doing one part of that. My sense has been that there's only 5 main quests: Do the 4 beasts, then do castle/ganon, then it's "game over" from a story perspective. Is that assumption correct, and I should continue exploring/shrining before going back to story quests or is there any other special exploration story stuff that kicks in after the 4 beasts?

Also, about 25 orbs....hearts or stamina?

NEStalgia

Eel

I personally find that having two entire "circles" of stamina is more than enough for most situations. So, so far, I only invested 20 orbs into stamina and the rest for hearts.

You definitely want to invest into at least 13 hearts total because reasons. Let's just say it's an important amount of health.

About story, there's I think about seven important main missions. But the rest of the game is still enjoyable and some side quests offer interesting mini plots.

Of course, finding and doing the shrines is also fun in its own right. And finding the Koroks is a nice side activity. And there's many mini games too.

Don't be afraid of playing the game however you like.

@NEStalgia Whatever you feel benefits your playstyle the most. A little bit of stamina early on can go a long way... but at the same time, stamina-refilling ingredients and food are plentiful, and three hearts leaves you vulnerable to (near)one-shots to basically anything stronger than a red boko or keese. Health boosting food, on the other hand, is somewhat rare.

Earlier today I faced off against a StalHinox and just barely survived a trample with a quarter heart with five (plus one from a soft bed sleep) hearts, some slightly better gear and a low level defence elixir.

@meleebrawler @Meowpheel Do the 7 include each of the 4 beasts separately, and does that include the memory locations quest?

Hmm, it sounds like hearts are still a lot more important than stamina then. So far I've explored maybe half or a little over half the overworld. Haven't really been to the east end and northern end except for Akkala.

Yes, if you ask me, the main quests are:

  • Liberate Mido (I'll use the names they reference because honestly I can't remember the real ones).
  • Liberate Nabooru
  • Liberate Darunia
  • Liberate Ruto
  • Reclaim the Master Sword
  • Regain all your memories
  • Destroy Ganon

Though there's a ton many more bigish quests to do. But they're ultimately not important to the overall plot.

@NEStalgia Should maybe put a disclaimer on those ingredients I mentioned... they could be more or less common in other places, I haven't gotten very far yet. Just boost whatever you feel is most helpful at any given moment, and make food to cover your shortcomings if need be.

I think there's an important need of stamina at the beginning since climbing is central in the game, in the meanwhile you can survive with cooking. Then you can start focus more (if not only) on hearths considering you should have all you need for every situation with potions, meals and things like that. I'm doing really fine like this. About quests order i'm finding really a great time by doing things slowly, taking my time to explore all of Hyrule one region at a time and trying to do all i can between side quests, Korok seeds, Shrines, grabbing materials and so on, leaving main story to the last. It's really really immersive!

If you are playing docked and with out the joy-con grip....which joy-con controls your gyro aiming? Right or Left?

I think the extra map feature that comes with the DLC will be showing you by color or something where you have been in the map so that you can ensure you have seen every inch of the world if you want to.

Bit of Amiibo info for those interested or having trouble spawning Epona. I first used Smash Link Amiibo to try and spawn Epona outside Duelling Peak Stables, in the field where the horses are and got nothing but a chest and items. Tried it every day for 5 days after and nothing. Read some other people's experiences and then tried the following solution. I saved my game then used every single Amiibo I have, other than Smash Link. After using 8 Amiibos, I then I finally used Smash Link again and lo and behold Epona spawned. So if anyone is having difficulty. Save your game, use any other Amiibos you have, then find a nice big field, preferably with horses and try Smash Link, hopefully Epona will spawn for you

@meleebrawler I'm cheap and don't spend money on inns Rupees are scarce enough, and I found the shop with the 2000+ rupee goods! Yikes But that clothing looks great.....

@blaisedinsd The right joycon does the aiming.

Speaking of rupees; how are people getting money? I have been selling apples because it seems like all other resources are used for something later on in the game. I barely had cash for arrows and to stable a horse.
