Topic: Switching players on Mario odyssey

I have been playing Mario odyssey in 2 player with player 1 using the joy cons and player 2 using a pro controller. We’d like to keep our own favourite controllers but switch character - any idea how?! Nintendo just says “decide who will be Mario and who will be Cappy” but there doesn’t seem to be any way to tell the Switch that or cycle through controller options for each player etc.

@Zebbie Controller 1 is mario, controller 2 is cappy, which you can see with the 4 LED lights on each controller. If you want to keep your controller, and switch from mario to cappy (or the other way):

Hit the Home button..
Select controller icon at bottom of Switch home screen.
Select "change grip/order".
The first controller to re-sync will become controller 1. Then sync the second controller.
Hit home button again to jump back and resume your game.

I think that's the only way to do it. That's how I've done it.

If you try to do it without leaving the game, by un-syncing the conrtollers, it won't let you change the order. Weird, but that's how it is - I just tested it. Since the game was made pre-pandemic, I think Nintendo assumed you'd trade controllers. Post pandemic though, I could see people not wanting to trade controllers mid-game, to avoid close contact covid precautions. (or if you prefer pro controller vs joycon)

Thank you so much! We don’t mind about sharing, but one of us is an adult with arthritis in their hands and the other is a young child, so our hands are quite different sizes/flexibility and the controllers that we have suit us much better one way round!
