@JackEatsSparrows yeah, i get lips stick often. And yeah it seems to rotate to level up spirits evenly. Which makes sense i guess? I have several spirits in the 70s or so.... Why have auto if it's useless? And who can figure out what spirits to use anyway? . I've used victini maybe twice though. Ugh.... Much as i liked wol at first this spirits mess is making me miss subspace even more . Gimmick bs battles with cheating ai unless you have the "right" combination of spirits out of 1200... Humbug!
@NEStalgia I mean, WoL is basically as much of a JRPG as possible, minus an involved story and a traditional battle system.
Really though, some Spirits are much better on certain fighters than others. I have a Giga Mac Spirit on Little Mac that has an innate trait of Fist Attack+ and sent him to the Land Style dojo for even more ground power (at the cost of air attacks being weakened), and then slapped Great Zapfish and Victini on it for absolute massive damage.
Sort by perk in the menus then work your way from there. Or change the fighter. Dr. Wily, for example, is much easier with Lucas and Ness because their down-Special heals from projectiles.

@EvilLucario I'm not sure I'd call that "JRPG" as much as "all the awful parts of a Xenoblade game's horrible over convoluted systems condensed into a fighter, without the redeeming parts that help you overlook them." . No wonder you like it.
Then again i play Pokemon with the same 6-12 mon the whole game . I'm a JRPG nut. I'm an SMT fan. But WoL has only the bad attributes of a JRPG in terms of managing infinite spirits. At first i liked it almost as much as subspace, but the cracks are showing. Where the platforming got in the way of fighting slightly, spirit management gets in the way of fighting unfair gimmick fights heavily. Auto is a great way of helping with that, but yeah, I'm unlikely to ever have lv99 spirits. What i don't get though it's how you guys sorted builds that fast. We're i to try i would spend 4 or 5 hours per fight just sorting stats. Yuck.
@NEStalgia Well these are things that helped me with the management:
-Feeding āsnacksā to level up spirits with either high base stats, or 3 slots
-Marking supports as favorites
-Saving loadouts for stage hazards early game (āLAVAā, āFOGā, etc)
-Sort by skill for supports, by power for primaries.
-Save 3 or 4 loadouts that are āGo-toā, based on spirit battle type (stamina, gravity, etc)
Hope that helps some

@SonicMos ZSS is a good way for newcomers to learn dodging, aerials, and grabbing, I think. Itās like taking the fast parts of Sheik and Pikachu and mixing it with the weight of Link and Samus.

@NEStalgia I mean, Xenoblade didn't invent perks on gear. If anything it's like an evolution of held items from Pokemon, and I'm sure Pokemon didn't do that mechanic first. I get more Pokemon vibes than Xenoblade vibes.
Really though you need to use 3-4 star primary Spirits if you got them. They're going to make all the difference. Dojos that increase attributes like defense (at the cost of offense) or offense (at the cost of defense) also make a difference. Some support Spirits are also key.
I don't think Spirit management is much of a big deal since the auto-pick gets you as close as possible, then you can use other favorite Spirits for the job. For example for The Boss, I could pick out poison floor resist (not immunity) and keep my Giant Zapfish Spirit so I can still go in and punch ZSS outta there like nobody's business.
Level 99 Spirits are also pretty easy. Snacks and SP get Spirits to level 99 extremely quickly. And you can always use Doc Louis's gym to let four guys level up on their own while you do other things. It's like Merc Missions from Xenoblade 2, except way more convenient since it works even if you have the game off and it's quicker to get people in and out.

@EvilLucario I'm not sure auto gets you that close, it seems bent on equalizing level, so i often get 1 slot 2 star spirits etc. I didn't really pay much attention too it before, assuming the game always knows best.
Personally i would never think of things like ignoring Poison immunity in favor of giant, I'd always focus on immunity above all else (or lips stick if i trust the auto )
I discovered tron bonne is lv99 though, so i do have 1. I gave James mccloud snacks to lv50 now that i have him, too. I've been hoarding all my snacks so far. I do not spend consumables in games unless they're is no other choice (999 cheese blocks in Skyrim is definitely me. )
Yeah it's very Pokemon, and yeah, xc2 took the worst parts on Pokemon and make them worse.
Damn this Golden Dash Mushroom. The fight is ok, but its the shooting of the Spirit itself thats killing me. Have no items to slow the shield down. Ahhh well, I guess I still have a couple of days.
Just got it, thank goodness. Dont even want to think how many times I tried it, itll probably make me cry. lol
1186 spirits and 80 hours later. I'm on the last stretch though I'm still getting bullied by the Metroid Queen and... Baby Bowser of all things.
Are you using Giant Killer? Soma Cruz can really help you out. Also I recommend using the spirit board item that gradually decreases their HP and evade as many attacks as you can.
I defeated Metroid Queen mostly by spamming projectiles and up smash with Link
Baby Bowser I defeated with one move only: Ike's up special... that worked somehow
On a different note... this game isn't really kind to completionists. No reward or milestone for completing all challenges, no reward for collecting all the soundtracks, no reward for collecting all the Mii outfits. I guess there won't be a reward for collecting the 1300+ spirits either. I know they're still adding stuff, but still...
I recommend using all the characters maybe with the exception of echoes. No seriously, the experience you get from using every character for a while will give you a deeper understanding of smash's mechanics and it will help you understand your opponent.
@BMO_Advanced Post-launch content is the key, there'll probably be more challenges added in 2019/2020 and while DLC music is confirmed via the Fighters Pass there may be free music in future updates too. So in the end the milestones unlock around February 2020.
I swear the AI in this game are a bunch of teaming sods. Half of the time they are blatantly teaming: I once got knocked across the map into Dark Pit who had been charging up smash, with no one around him, and lost a life.
