Ike and Robin have really fun and different movesets. It's a shame there are so many characters that play like Marth that most people only focus on them.
I don't think the fact that they all hold a sword is the thing that makes them feel same. You can build an infinite number of different moves for a character with a sword, just as you can for someone who's using fists.
My favourite Fire Emblem Smash fighters are Ike and Daraen (Robin). Even though I didn't care for Corrin as a DLC character (I didn't buy any Smash4 DLC, because they were selling old characters like Mewtwo and Lucas) I can't wait to try him out. He/she will be a brandnew fighter to me. He/she seems like such a unique character. I love that they use a lance/dragon type character for once. Anyway, I always thought, one of the most iconic characters in Fire Emblem (besides dragon shapeshifters like Corrin) are the Pegasus units. The race that can turn into lions/tigers "Bloody Roar"-style (Ranulf, Lethe) and the Hawks (Tibarn) were also my favourites.
However, I feel like there are enough Fire Emblem and Pokémon characters for now, and way too few Chibi-Robo, Sin&Punishment, Excitebike 64, Wave Race, 1080°, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Rhythm Heaven, Prof. Layton, Advance Wars, Golden Sun, Custom Robo, Xenoblade, F-ZERO, Yoshi, Wario, and Punch-Out!! fighters.
I know people want even more Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and Starfox fighters, but they all have at least 3 fighters already, and I wish more series were represented that have 0 or only 1 fighter. Ultimate got only two new series: Splatoon and Castlevania, which is not that much if you know Smash. I know there was a third series confirmed, but unfortunately Konami didn't accept Nintendo's version of Bomberman - He would have been a fantastic classic character as well. Transforming a playable fighter into an Assist Trophy hurts. Maybe Nintendo and Konami can still work out Bomberman and come to terms for the next Smash game. A character being an Assist Trophy is synonymous for "forget this character being playable this time around", while spirits are not, and costumes at least seem to be not a deconfirmation.
Is this going to be a reverse this song fits with everything? This trailer fits with every song instead?
Although that Don't Stop Me Now is almost so close to a perfect fit it almost seems as if Nintendo developed it around the song but didn't secure the rights to use it.
I'm seemingly in the minority, but I'm not the biggest fan of the main Smash theme song - 'Lifelight' - anyway...so to have a trailer minus the usual musical accompaniment made for quite a refreshing and pleasant change!
...then to see it give rise to all of these fan-edited trailers - and all of the myriad songs that strangely seem to fit the on-screen action - really put a smile on my face The internet at its very, very best!
(..and if that was indeed a deliberate viral marketing ploy from Nintendo - I've gotta give them an A* for it - genius!)
So I've been thinking about a SE rep as DLC, and it always comes back to Slime from Dragon Quest for me. It seems even more likely to me since PPlant is a thing. I've decided to put a move-set together that makes sense to me. So here we go:
Jab- Just a basic tackle. Just quick and "strong" kind of like Ganondorf's jab.
Dash- Similar to jab, but gets bigger and becomes Mottle Slime.
Up tilt- Two more grow upward to make Slime stack.
Forward tilt- Becomes Seaslime (Shell Slime) and puts the shell forward to attack.
Down tilt- Becomes Liquid (Bubble) Slime with the ability to trip.
Up smash- Becomes a large King Slime where the crown is a sweat spot and the rest of the body is sour with push back depending on what side you are on.
Forward smash- Slime knight makes a slash forward.
Down smash- Become Magma Slime. Does similar to Dtilt but with the add effect of fire damage.
Neutral air- Become Gem (Emperor) Slime as a get off me move.
Up air- Become Drake (Dragon) Slime and attacks up with horns.
Forward air- Become Tree Slime and flipping forward for a meteor smash like Yoshi's or Mario's Fair.
Down air- Become Box Slime and dash down like Greninja including the bounce off.
Back air- Becomes a Slabbit and kicks backwards.
Neutral B- Turn into Cyber Slime and shoot a laser forward. Hold be to charge and shoot further. Similar to ROB's laser.
Up B- Becomes Wing slime or Angel Slime and shoots up and it can be angled.
Side B- I'd say Firebal since they could use it in the DQ monsters series. Could switch neutral and side be I think, which ever makes more sense.
Down B- Become Healslime and attack with tentacles while simultaneously healing yourself on contact. Best used in air.
Grab- Eating them like Yoshi sounds hilarious. So does just touching the opponent with no arm.
Final Smash- Become Rocket Slime and shoot at your opponents!!!
I mean, Slime has it all and it is very iconic. When I think of DQ the first thing I think of is Slime. Likely? I doubt it will be DLC, but it is fun to think about.
So I've seen some complaints about Ultimate not adding enough unique new fighters. Out of curiosity I made a comparison to see if this complaint has merit. I did not include characters that are clones in any way, for example melee's Ganenondorf, I'm talking about characters that brought with them their own moveset created from scratch.
New Fighters Melee
1. Bowser
2. Peach
3. Ice Climbers
4. Zelda
5. Mewtwo
6. Mr. Game & Watch
7. Marth
New Fighters Brawl
1. Diddy Kong
2. Pit
3. Meta Knight
4. Pokémon Trainer
5. Ike
6. Snake
7. Lucario
8. Sonic
9. Wario
10. R.O.B.
11. Olimar
12. King Dedede
Brawl also introduced Sheik and Zero Suit Samus. They're part of Zelda and Samus but they do have a unique moveset.
New Fighters Wii U:
1. Rosalina
2. Bowser Jr.
3. Little Mac
4. Palutena
5. Robin
6. Duck Hunt Duo
7. Greninja
8. Villager
9. Wii Fit Trainer
10. Shulk
11. Pacman
12. Mega Man
13. Ryu (DLC)
14. Cloud (DLC)
15. Corrin (DLC)
16. Bayonetta (DLC)
New Fighters Ultimate:
1. King K. Rool
2. Ridley
3. Incineroar
4. Isabelle (questionable)
5. Inkling
6. Simon Belmont
7. Piranha Plant (DLC)
So yeah Ultimate falls a little short. Even if the 5 upcoming DLC characters are all unique (doubtful) Ultimate won't add as many new refreshing playstyles compared to the previous entry. I guess everything else has to make up for that fact, and everything else is a lot, so I'm not complaining... everyone is here right? ^_^
@BMO_Advanced I'd probably remove Toon Link from this. He is basically just a chibi Link. Isabelle has more differences to villager than Toon Link has to say, Link from Smash 64 or Melee.
@ReaderRagfish No doubt, and right now would be a perfect storm. Switch is doing so well and it is portable. It is a advertisement on the go.
Fire Emblem and Zelda both have a lot and barely any representation at the same time, Smash's FE characters are all sword users with some variations (e.g. Robin's magic, Corrin's dragon abilities) meanwhile half of the Zelda characters are Link. It's very bad when characters are cut so just increase the amount of characters from these franchises instead.
Hyrule Warriors is an extremely good example of how well Zelda representation can be (definitive edition could've done with a season pass though) and while some of the roster are assist trophies (Skull Kid, Midna, Ghirahim) there's plenty of good choices left.
Had my GameCube controller adaptor for switch/smash pre order cancelled yesterday by Amazon, stating that Nintendo were not bringing it to the UK any more. Did I miss that bit of news? Anyone else had this happen?
