I think Geno is happening because Square being involved in this series now.

There's a werid myth about Geno that's like the myth surrounding King K. Rool.

Nintendo used King K. Rool all the time over the years, in games like the Donkey Konga series, or DK Jet Race / Barrel Blast, DK King of Swing, DK Jungle Climber, and Mario Super Sluggers.

Geno didn't get that much recognition because he's just not as popular, but Nintendo still had him in a game in 2003 that had nothing to do with Square, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Nintendo has all the rights to Super Mario RPG and all of its characters except for probably one: The secret Final Fantasy boss Culex.

@SKTTR if you read the credits of M&L, you’ll notice that Geno was used with permission from Square Enix.

The Mario and Luigi series is a spiritual successor to SMRPG, like Paper Mario, so using Geno was a nice little nod to the past.

They removed him from the remake, probably because they didn’t want to go through the trouble of asking SQ again.

Some more from my wishlist.

Oceana Louvier (rep from Endless Ocean)

@Yosheel Seriously? I should have checked the credits better. I assumed Nintendo bought off any Super Mario RPG assets since his inclusion in Mario&Luigi. Thanks for the heads up!

@ReaderRagfish : I was tempted to play Awakening/Fates in classic mode, but the fact that "dead" characters continue to appear in cutscenes completely ruined the immersion and novelty of the permadeath mechanic. I occasionally restart the game when a character dies, even in casual mode, but I'm not dedicated enough to making the game frustrating to the point that I would no longer enjoy the game, so I just keep it off, but I am really glad that the option exists because I definitely wouldn't be enjoying the series as much as I do otherwise (and not everyone has the time/patience to put with Insane/Classic).

It would nice though, if the NES/SNES games were ported, localised and released in a special retail compilation. It's unlikely that it will ever happen as it would require quite a bit of work for an extremely niche audience. Instead, I think we will be seeing more remakes in the style of Echoes going forward.

@Yosheel Roy's game stands a chance if Shadows of Valentia did well enough, either way we definitely wouldn't see it until sometime after Three Houses.

I'm surprised NintendoLife or anyone else hasn't talked about the recent Corocoro leak yet:

Apparently, Corocoro says there'll be 108 stages in total, meaning there's another 5 stages they haven't shown off. What do you guys think? Could this be true or possibly an error on Corocoro's part?

Depends, if there's post-launch support for Smash Ultimate (i.e. free content updates or DLC) then I could see that happening (5 stages and then a DLC stages button finishing the row. If the launch version is the final product however then I see 6 as more likely.

@TJWorks Typo, calling it now.

@Grumblevolcano Nah, keep in mind there's a training stage that needs to display in training mode somehow. We will likely get no more than 5 pre-DLC.

@SKTTR @Yosheel I'd like to point out Geno has appeared more recently than that: He was DLC as a mii fighter costume in Smash for Wii U/3DS. Which... means that clearly Sakurai already negotiated the rights once.

@SKTTR I prefer N64 Ricky over Gamecube Ricky.

Why? He's the same Ricky Winterborn.

By the way, did you know that 1080° and Wave Race are from the same Nintendo universe?

I leave out the first game from 1992 - Wave Race (Game Boy) - because it had no named characters.

1996 - Wave Race 64 (Nintendo 64)
1998 - 1080° Snowboarding (Nintendo 64)
2001 - Wave Race: Blue Storm (Gamecube)
2003 - 1080° Avalanche (Gamecube)

Wave Race 64 featured four playable characters.
Ryota Hayami, Ayumi Stewart, Miles Jeter, and David Mariner.

1080° Snowboarding featured five playable characters.
Akari Hayami, Ricky Winterborn, Kensuke Kimachi, Dion Blaster, and Rob Haywood.
I believe 1080° Snowboarding's Akari Hayami is the sister of Wave Race 64's Ryota Hayami. That's where the connection comes from apart from both games being developed by the same Nintendo in-house studio.

Wave Race: Blue Storm featured 8 playable characters.
Ryota Hayami, Ayumi Stewart, and David Mariner from Wave Race 64 are back.
Akari Hayami, Ricky Winterborn and Rob Haywood from 1080° Snowboarding also join the wave racers, along with 2 newcomers Nigel Carver and Serena Del Mar.

The final game in the series, 1080° Avalanche featured only 5 main characters (but also unlockable alt costume and joke characters)
Appearing for the third time: Akari Hayami, Ricky Winterborn, and Rob Haywood - which makes them the most prominent characters in the series. The 2 newcomers Kemen Vazquez and Tara Hunter seem to replace Kensuke Kimachi and Dion Blaster from the first 1080°.

I wish these 13 Nintendo characters would make a glorious comeback. And while we're at it bring the five guys from Excitebike 64 along. I always thought they'd fit the theme and style, even though there's no crossover. A Nintendo stunt motocross - avalanche escaping - jetski world, that celebrates Nintendo's first great 3D sports games and brings back all these characters to life so many of us grew up with, featuring old racing courses in HD and new ones. One of my dreams. ^^

But F-ZERO first!

I'm going to run with the 5 additional stages rumor with some ideas:

Fighters (New Stage):
Geno (Nimbus Land)
Decidueye (Alola Pokemon League)
Bandana Waddle Dee (Deluxe Coliseum, Kirby Battle Royale)
Isaac (Crossbone Isle)
Spring Man (Sky Arena, with Max Brass as a stage hazard)
Skull Kid
Dixie Kong, echo of Diddy
Shadow, echo of Sonic
Viridi, echo of Palutena
Ken, echo of Ryu

I have a feeling in the (inevitable) next Smash Direct that Digby will be announced as an echo fighter of isabelle. It makes too much sense! Visually, the characters are similar and their moveset could be similar too!

Aren't all games region-free on the Switch?

@MisterPi @DarthNocturnal
Referring to the actual language choice. Certain games, like Splatoon, have different ROMs per region, while other ones, like BOTW, share the same one and just change if you change your region. I'm hoping for the latter so I don't have to buy another copy to get JP voices.

@Matthew010 I just pictured Digby with Isabelle's falling animation... welp. That'd be something.

As for the 108 stages leak, it's probably just a typo. Has Corocoro made any statements regarding that? If I could speak Japanese I'd reach out to them myself but...

Personally, I'm expecting that leaked echo (y'all know who it is if you've seen the image) and one last bizarre character choice, like maybe a generic Excitebiker. No more stages, 3-4 more new Assist Trophies plus 7-8 more returning ones, about the same for Pokeball Pokemon. No Special Orders, Subspace style story mode, Smash Tour, or Smash Run, but we'll get Stage Builder, Events and Stadium per usual. Stadium will have Boss Battles a la Brawl, Home-Run Contest, Multi-Man Smash, and Break the Targets (again brawl styled).

Henmii

I think there will be a final Direct in November. There they will reveal the secret mode. I really hope it is single-player stuff. I also hope that te whole Direct is about single-player. Because I feel that Nintendo is drifting more and more away from single-player games, while single-player games are actually the stuff I play. It may sound silly but I play Smash purely for the single-player. No single-player, no buy for me.

But enough of that. I think they will also reveal the last characters. Most likely 2, 3 at a stretch. I guess one of them will be very weird, wich is good. Could be the rumored Rhythm heaven one!

Henmii

link3710

@Henmii Honestly, 3 is quite likely. We'll almost certainly see at least 2 character reveal trailers (not only logically, but there's 2 separate sets of evidence of a trailer being delayed) and we'll definitely get at least 1 echo. I could see as many as 2 trailers + 3 echoes happening again, like in August.
