This might be an unpopular opinion, but...what would Square get out of putting Geno in Smash Bros.? Wouldn't they rather take the opportunity to push another franchise of theirs?
@backup368 They wouldn't get anything... however the flaw in that logic is that Nintendo is paying for the licensing costs. If Squeenix was giving them the right to put a character in for free it'd make sense, but they're charging. So Geno would likely cost far less than the like of Sora for example.
@link3710 See, that doesn't make sense. If Geno were in this game, you can't really say it would be good for Square Enix. Because he's got no franchise of his own, you can't market with him, and all the people who have been requesting him were already planning to buy the game anyway.
@backup368 I didn't say it would be good for Square Enix promotionally, I said getting paid for a property they'd never otherwise use is a smart business decision. Sakurai would have gone to them. It wouldnt have been "Well, we'll let you put X character in the game", the discussion would have been Sakurai saying, "What would it take for you to license Geno to Nintendo for this game."

@backup368 I mean, I'm not saying if it's fake or not, but the story is this:
Someone took a Snapchat story video of their workplace for whatever reason, from the little context we have it was apparently an antinintendo rant.
They either sent it out (unknown if it was privately, but presumed so)
One of the people who saw it took screenshots of the snapchat vid, tried to black out the original person's name (and failed to do so) and then posted those screenshots to 4Chan
So because the leak wasn't intentional to be widespread, that accounts for why they aren't clear pictures. The fuzzy banners we've seen were cleaned up by community members from the stills that were posted.
The main reason why I would consider the leak to be fake is because of the amount of newcomers shown in the banner. Sakurai said the new character announcements would slow down. Having that many announced in a little over a month would be speeding up significantly. Unless he just said that to fake us out. I would be satisfied if that leak were real though. All those characters make a lot of sense.
@Cynas But who said all the characters had to be announced before the game's release?
Duck Hunt wasn't revealed before Smash 3DS alongside returning characters like Dr. Mario, for example.
@Cynas I haven't looked at the leak but if it's true, is it possible some are DLC like how Mewtwo was mentioned in the final pre-launch Smash Wii U Direct.
@Grumblevolcano That's possible, but if it's a banner to advertise the game for it's release it seems strange to include DLC characters. Although I guess it could also be future artwork for once the DLC is released, but I can't see it being on the special edition box or advertised in stores if those characters aren't out yet.
I also recall reading somewhere that Sakurai said he wouldn't even think about DLC characters until after the game was released, but I might be wrong about that.
What if he (Sakurai) sort of trolled with his comment about slowing down character reveal trailers. In the sense that there might only be one or two left, but they each reveal multiple characters (rather than character specific trailers).
Not saying the leak is real or not, but given his history it's a possibility.
