I feel like this is gonna be Smash Bros. 4.5, regardless of what they call it. Like, there's no good reason to not reuse the majority of content from 3DS/Wii U. Like look at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there's not much they need to do to make a massive hit, let's be honest here.
@KaiserGX
Yeah, they did it pretty well with mega man, though I'd prefer more variety for the down B.
I would personally prefer if they reworked gannondorf into his own character, along with toon link, really should have had wind waker moves with items unique to his game. They could easily replace current gannondorf with Blackbull from F-zero, and give Ganondorf moves more reminiscent of his games.
I also wouldn't mind some more clones who function a bit differently, like if they put in blood falcon for real and changed some stats to make him feel very different while using the same moveset. Maybe even give the amiibo some real functionality, like using the sticker album idea from brawl, and saving those stats to an amiibo, allowing you to save your character for a sub space emissary type mode, and having a special amiibo battle mode, where you can customize your fighter and fight with other customized characters. If they balance the stickers well, you can have some very interesting matches.
The article in the Switch's news section refers to it as "Super Smash Bros. (working title)".
Smash 4 development started in 2012 after Kid Icarus released and the game released in 2014. That was on two platforms with a lot of content made from scratch and the work that went into keeping the balancing/gameplay the same across the two versions. They did all of that in two years.
Smash 4 DLC wrapped up in early 2016. If Smash Switch started around then, they'd absolutely have enough time to make a new Smash game considering it's only on one platform and they could reuse a lot of assets.
@IceClimbers Although I personally don't think it's a totally new game, I completely forgot that they only need to develop it on one system this time... this is surely helping for sure.
@YummyHappyPills Mostly new maps, new characters, new moves. Maybe new items? And even though many people don't like this idea; Ditch a lot of the old stuff. Remove 50%-75% of the old characters/maps/etc., and add in new stuff to fill in the gaps. The game will play very different, it'll be a new experience to new and old players. And you don't get the issue that in ten years time the character roster becomes so big that it's impossible to keep it. It's the Pokemon dilemma, it's going to be unsustainable one day.
Honestly if it were up to me, and I know people would hate me, I would get rid of a lot of characters, and revamp a lot of the characters to the point where they are almost new. Have custom movesets more incorporated into the main game as well, where it's not a separate mode but another choice when you select your character. Maybe there could also be a selection of pre-made builds that mimic certain clones characters (like have a Falco build for Fox named "I Prefer The Air" or "Don't Get Too Cocky" for Wolf).
@KaiserGX You're not the only one. I think that by removing a bunch of content, refining the reminder and adding some new content can make a game feel like new.
What you're saying about Smash increasing its character count even more after Brawl being unsustainable is accurate, but removing content doesn't make the core content feel new. And Mario/Link/Samus/etc are a lot of the carryover content for Smash. The only way to make them feel new is to recreate the base combat mechanics and animations — how you make an actually new game. Smash 4 will feel like Smash 4 as long as you jump and float and punch the same regardless of axing a bunch of Fire Emblem characters or not.
Now this is what's at the end of the Switch Smash Bros. trailer.
How I possibly read this is that it's an updated port of the Wii U/3DS game. Nintendo and HAL Laboratory made the original game but only Nintendo and not HAL Laboratory are working on this upgraded port. If you pay attention to gaming, you would have heard Sakurai recently talking about doing consultancy work, I think that's what he may be doing on this project and he was talking about Smash Bros. in this interview.
"…Well for me, every time I always think, “This might be the last one.” If it’s a request from a client then I’ll consider it, but I do wonder, “Is it alright if I’m not the director?” It might be good to take on more of a consulting role."
Nintendo wouldn't say at the end of the trailer in tiny writing that this is an "original game".
It will be interesting to see if the 3rd party character license agreements are still in place for this port. I don't see why not, although if it's an all inclusive game, then Capcom and Square Enix probably won't make the same money for Ryu and Cloud as they did when they were separate paid for DLC characters.
I also think it was wrong for Cloud to be in Smash Bros., even Ryu to a lesser extent. There hasn't been a new Street Fighter game on a Nintendo home console since the SNES, that's well over 20 years.
@Snaplocket No I wasn't wrong. Read properly what I wrote. I said it started development on the Wii U but said it was probably never intended to release on the Wii U. The Switch development kit wouldn't have even been a thing back at the end of 2013.
New game or port doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is what content is included. Half of the 3DS and WiiU stages could be included with a number of new ones. A complete refresh of characters could be done - changing movement options for them.
But yeah, just improve the online massively and we have a winner.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE They wouldn't develop it on Wii U if it wasn't planned to release on the system. Wii U has an outdated architecture, it would've been a waste of time and resources. It would've been developed on a PC until they had a rough idea of what the Switch could handle.
@Haru17 I don't think you even need to touch the mechanics or engine to make the game feel new. Also it's not just removing characters, but recreating all new movesets for older ones as well as tweaking little things here and there. I would remove the fireball from Mario's moveset (it's technically an item which is already in the game).
I'm not gonna make an actual moveset but for special moves I would think...
B - Throw Cappy forward to knock enemies back (no damage) You can slightly move the hat with the analog stick for a short time. Holding B has Cappy spinning in place for a brief period where you get an extra jump if you land on it.
Up B - Fludd stream hover. Holding Up B charges it. Pressing it again you can jump and hover in the air for a bit (you can't move forward) or if you press Up B and then forward you do a quick dash explodes you forward for decent damage but has no vertical movement.
Most regular attacks use the hammer instead of his fists. Just some quick examples, obviously I didn't put much thought into any of it.
