I’ve had no idea there was a thread for a fantasy smm3.

Totally 100% coming out in 2026. The date was secretly encoded into the Tokyo stock market exchange.

@FishyS Oh yeah I forgot about mountain, I think that's in the New Super Mario Bros games and Super Mario World, so it's a pretty main. I really like the colors used on that location, would be nice to be able to use it in SMM3!

I'm just moving this over to the Switch 2 forum because why not.

Even though I doubt we will get Mario Maker 3 immediately on Switch 2, I'm sure it will come.

The mouse functionality seems like it will be the biggest potential intrinsic difference (besides extra units/modes/etc) but there is also the potential for larger or more complicated levels if Nintendo allows it.

im also on the team that would love to see a 3d level theme and feel it could be done in an intuitive way, especially based around 3d world since 3d world/land had a lot simpler geometric environments for the most part (but having skins/backgrounds/music for other games would be cool)

when it comes to 2d level creation one thing i would like is to be able to mix and match backdrops and music between themes, like for example you could use the cave theme but with the backdrop for the outdoor area and music from another theme.

another 2d mode thing i would love to see would be more options when it comes to the size/shape of the play area alongside the horizontal/vertical choices, for example one which is only one screen high but twice as long.

when it comes to world maps it would be interesting to have some other themes for that and also maybe even let you use one really big map with multiple tile types so you could go for something along the lines of mario world or NSMBU

@Mgalens Mixing the music and map backgrounds would be a lot of fun. More music options in general would be really nice to have!

I agree changing the dimensions of the map would be really good for SMM3. One thing I don’t like about SMM2 is that you can only choose horizontal or vertical, but nothing in between.

I think the World Maker was one of the best additions to SMM2, but it definitely needs improvements. Only having Super Mario World options was kind of limited, I’d really like NSBU or SMB3 as options as well. Having one huge map would have tons of possibilities as well.

I am really hoping we have mouse features for SMM3. It would be so ideal for this game (assuming it’s another 2D game), I just hope it’s not required.

Any chance they will update SMM2 for Switch 2 to be compatible with the mouse controls?

Seems very unlikely they would actually modify smm2 so I suppose it depends on whether Nintendo adds some clever way to make the mouse work for all touch screen games. Even then I assume it will be much better in smm3 which will potentially be designed with the mouse in mind.

just read a bunch of this thread, so many good ideas! nintendo better be paying attention to us.
playing mm2 again makes me reallyyyy want three next year. obvious wants are wonder as a new style (i dont know if they would do that only three years after though, maybe after wonder 2 or something.) 3d would be great but i feel would get overwhelming veryyy quickly. paper mario would be fun! and new playable characters such as peach.
i also really really REALLY want text-in-level option like in geometry dash. sometimes you just want to say things in your level for players to be encouraged!

BRING NINJI INTO MARIO KART WORLD RIGHT NOW.
five favorite games of all time:
1. splatoon 3
2. minecraft
3. mother 2

15 more minutes of hoping for Mario Maker 3 and then probably being disappointed 😆

Not even slightly confirmed. But the fact that they chose not to upgrade smm2 for mouse support like they did similar games might indicate super mario maker 3 is under construction.

Super Mario Maker 2 sold almost 10 million without harming the sales of the other 2 2D mario games on Switch so I doubt they will stop the sub-series. It's also one of those series which is basically free advertising for Nintendo because so many YouTubers and streamers play it.

Very true. And now that they have Wonder, there is a whole new theme AND wonder effects they can mess with.

And I "wonder" (sorry lol) if they would ever consider expanding Mario Maker to handle 3D environments. Would likely be on the small end, but that would be a natural step and quite the overall package if MM3 included 2D and 3D options.

I can imagine bite-sized playgrounds sort of like the individual islands in Bowser's Fury. (And it's also on my mind because I'm doing another run of that currently haha)

More personalization features. Custom music, text boxes, and maybe even simple assets could go a long way towards making levels more distinct.
