@woomynnyes I am too lazy to put a pic, but I made my Christmassy locker if you wanna check it out in game.

Dang, bro! That's christmas'y.😁 You've got two or three more stickers you could use. You need something white for snow, or grass.

@CaleBoi25 playing blob in S3 makes me miss when I had splash wall, but I’ve had to adapt to using sprinkler. This is actually really helpful. My favourite thing to do with sprinkler thought is to place it directly under one of the big dummies in the training room and watch it do insane amount of damage quickly.

@CaleBoi25 I used the deco kit when kraken clam cheese was a thing and I’m ashamed of myself. I always thought it would be funny (not good) to give blob bubble blower from S2. My ideal kit would be wall and chump (however I think ink jet would be fun)

@WoomyNNYes hey, thanks for doing what I was to lazy to lol! I like how even tho we both have Cmas trees, they are still distinct. Just another point in favor of lockers being a great addition! @Xenoblade-Fan oddly, .I didn't start using Blob Deco until after the cheese was removed!

I beat Side Order for the first time this evening! I used the Order Shot, and I failed the first time, but had enough Prlz to try again, and I made it by the skin of my teeth.

@CaleBoi25 you say that your a wannabe competitive player this has brought up a question I’ve always had, what defines an actual competitive player? Do you need to have a team? I don’t think I invest enough time in the game to practice with a team because of real world obligations, nor do I think I would thrive in that environment because I find low ranking weapons more fun to play (for example I main vanilla blob) I can also see the meta becoming more aggressive and dive-like ( it was fun seeing the double strike and double cooler I think it was last weekend) and as a player who enjoys more anchor and when absolutely necessary skirmisher weapons I’m feeling very left out.

OH BOY IS THIS QUESTION RIGHT UP MY (Eeltail) ALLEY!!!

Hello, my in-game name is DJ, and I'm the dedicated support player for a low-level Splatoon team named Data Breach. Having just gone through the process of being recruited for a team over the last few months, I'd like to answer your questions for a secondary perspective.

Competitive is a totally different beast from playing solo or with friends for fun. You can generally expect to get out what you put in, as well as learn about yourself, the type of person you are, and the type of people you get along with.

I'll start by responding to each individual point you made:

What defines an actual competitive player?

A competitive player is generally someone who sees the thrills in the wins, while also being driven to improve by each and every loss, and at the same time understanding their own limits, yet being confident in the areas they excel in.

Do you need to have a team?

No, a team is not a requirement. Most tournaments will have an option to sign up as a substitute player (alternate), so that you could still get a chance to play if someone has to drop out for whatever reason. There are also pickups, which is where four people, who may or may not know each other, form a temporary team to play in a tournament, scrimmage, or other competitive event.

I don’t think I invest enough time in the game to practice with a team because of real world obligations

As a team, there's no obligation to do a lot or a little. People have lives, and for a lot of people doing competitive is a hobby outside of work or other irl stuff. If you're looking at competitive Splatoon for esports money, don't. Again: If you're looking at competitive Splatoon for esports money, don't.

nor do I think I would thrive in that environment because I find low ranking weapons more fun to play

Withholding my thoughts about meta-or-else being a sentiment shared by part of the community, there's a wide variety of weapons and potential compositions with those weapons. Anything can work if you're skilled enough. For example, my team is exploring a composition with no backline or cooler, consisting of Splat Roller (slayer), Splash-O-Matic (support/skirmisher), Dread Wringer (support/slayer/skirmisher), and Tenta Brella (pseudo-backline/skirmisher), and this is definitely off-meta.

To your point about feeling left out, I was also worried about this prior to joining competitive, and I can say that when you find the right people, things won't feel like that. Truthfully, at low-level competitive play, having good relationships with the people you're playing with is significantly more important than matching skill levels, especially if you decide to join a team. In my case, I spend anywhere between 6 to 30 hours per week with my teammates, sometimes even more, and if I tried to do that with people I absolutely do not get along with, I would drive myself insane.

All that being said, if you have any other questions, feel free to [at] me in the forums here, or if you'd like you could add me on Discord.

Good Luck, Have Fun!

That would make sense, given that the games have (or used to have) the same development team.

Yo! Cool! I also played the charger to 15F last night, and it was a LOT of fun.

Thank you so much for this lengthy response. If you don’t mind I have some follow up questions:
How did you know you wanted to start playing with a team?

You said you were a low ranking team, is this by x power, leagues under the ink, or some other calculation?

Do you have a method of learning new weapons in solo q?

What support weapons do you main?

Thanks again!

How did you know you wanted to start playing with a team?

When I started investing more time into improving at Splatoon, and went from around 8 hours per month to around 50 or 60 hours a month, and realized that I'm already investing this time into improving my own play, so I might as well take the chance to invest the time in improving other aspects of my life, like task management, emotional regulation, and socialization. Also, when I saw and heard examples of western team play (with comms, callouts, and other communication) and thought, "hey, that'd be fun!"

You said you were a low ranking team, is this by x power, leagues under the ink, or some other calculation?

It's less of a numerical thing, and more of an individual skill thing. The skills needed for competitive play are much different than the pure mechanical skill needed for solo play, because the types of situations you encounter are very different in each. In fact, two of my teammates are very much mechanically skilled, to the point that it hurts their performance in a coordinated setting, and they've had to work to pull back the instinct to carry, whereas even though I'm not near as mechanically skilled, I make up for it in terms of team coordinating and understanding of the game moment by moment.

Do you have a method of learning new weapons in solo q?

I don't actually. In fact the weapons I use, especially seriously, are very limited: short range shooters with a bomb and a special that is helpful to my teammates, suppressive to the enemy, or protective of an advantage.

What support weapons do you main?

In terms of competitive play, my weapon pool consists of:

  • Neo Splash-O-Matic (Suction Bomb/Triple Inkstrike)
  • Splash-O-Matic (Burst Bomb/Crab Tank)
  • Splattershot Junior (Splat Bomb/Big Bubbler)
  • N-Zap 85 (Suction Bomb/Tacticooler)
  • Tentatek Splattershot (Splat Bomb/Triple Inkstrike)

And in terms of fun, I like:

  • E-Liter 4K
  • Splat Roller
    ... and others!
