New to the Table Turf card game. Got to level 2. AI keeps busting through my wall of ink before they get their special charged.... .over and over and over. They're doing it real early. How are they doing that? Is there a way to block that? I'm baffled.
("wall of ink" meaning that I've put ink all the way across the board.)
@WoomyNNYes If the number of points on their card is lower than yours, their card will overtake yours. So for example, if they play a 5 point card and you play a 10 point card and they overlap, the 5 point card will overtake it.

@StarPoint I thought we could only paint over their ink with a Special? Any time I place a card that goes over their ink, the game just doesn't let me place it. Am I missing something?
@WoomyNNYes Yeah, sorry I should have worded that better. You can only paint over them with a special, but if, for example, you're both pushing to one specific point that hasn't been painted, it might be a good idea to use a smaller card when you meet up to increase the chances of overtaking their card.

@Takomaki A the main ability of a piece of gear = 1. Each of the three sub ability slots = 0.3. So, if all three slots are the same ability, you'll have 0.9.
The choice of abilities depends on what you want & how you want to play. In the game, when selecting which gear you want to wear, you can press the left trigger, and it will give you a description of what the ability does.
For the Tentatek Splattershot, and a few other weapons, I prioritize Ins Saver Sub, because I use the splatbomb often. I usually use 2-3 sub slots of Ink Recovery Up to recharge ink quicker after using the sub weapon. Sometimes I like having some Swim Speed, or sometimes I like a few Special Charge Up to charge the Special Weapon faster.
If you have questions about certain abilities, just ask. There are usually some youtubers that have videos demonstrating the effectiveness particular abilities, showing how much one main ability. I used to watch ThatSRB2Dude for that stuff back during Splatoon 2, but I don't know if he's covered them since Splatoon 3. Although, most abilities are about the same in Splatoon 3 (unless someone here wants to correct me).
Here's a build I run often. But it's personal preference. Sometimes I will run most all Ink Saver Sub, if that's all I care about. But there are plenty of people who never run Ink Saver Sub. You can see other people's gear abilites if you open battle history in Splatnet 3 on the NSO app.
If I use a weapon and don't plan to use the sub weapon, I'll usually add more Swim Speed Up, or a bit more Ink Recovery Up.
You'll also notice some people will commonly run a single sub ability of Quick Super Jump. The one sub of Quick Super Jump makes your super jump more instantaneous, if you need to exit at sticky situation.
Thanks for the thorough reply.
My main issue is that I dont get why ability x would be better than y on a specific item. Is it just personal preference?
@Takomaki Yeah, choice of ability is based on preference, playstyle/strategy, or may vary depending on game mode, or whatever you're in the mood for. Maybe you'll change your abilites to counter a certain weapon & player that was destroying you in a match. Maybe people getting splatted more in a ranked mode can make them prefer Quick Respawn, or Stealth Swim, or Stealth Super Jump. I get the sense that maybe you're not sure why people may chose certain abilities, which would be understandable, because there's a good bit of depth to Splatoon. That's part of the genius of Splatoon. If you're new-ish to Splatoon, sometimes the reason someone is using an ability may not be obvious. Since you're asking a broad question, it's hard not to have a long explanation.
Over time, I realized some people are using certain abilities for different reasons or advantages. Run Speed Up can be used for a couple reasons: Some people like being able to strafe back & forth quickly while shooting, which makes it harder for people to shoot you. You'll likely see people using Run Speed Up with a splatling gun, or maybe another gun. Some guns get more benefit from Run Speed than others. Or, Run Speed Up may be used solely for running faster across grated catwalks that you can't swim across. I even remember some people seemed OP running at me & shooting while using Run Speed Up and some Dualie guns.
I may like Swim Speed Up just for the getting across the map faster at the beginning of a match. Or maybe I like it for getting back into a match quicker after being splatted. Or I may want Swim Speed Up just for chasing down enemies, or just making it harder for enemies to catch me.
If you're not sure why some people favor some abilities, feel free to ask.
@StarPoint or anyone
Is there any way to block the AI in Table Turf??? I'm baffled how the AI can just bust through my ink like it's nothing. I just uploaded two clips. Both times, I purposely placed a smaller card to block the AI, and AI played a bigger card, but STILL busts through my ink. Can AI be BLOCKED????? I thought placing the smaller card means I won the draw?
These are both from a game I just played against Cool Jelly level 2
@WoomyNNYes So the deal with that is you can’t just full on block an incoming card if it goes through your own. Rather, what smaller cards do is they instead cover up any of the enemy blocks that collide with each other. In both of those examples, the enemy placed a card that went further into your territory, and since the card you placed was smaller, it covered over a few of the squares that the enemy would have gotten in addition if you hadn’t placed it down. Sorry if my wording’s confusing here; it’s kinda complicated. Basically, placing smaller cards doesn’t completely block out an enemy card, but rather it covers up the squares the enemy card would have gotten if you hadn’t placed your card there. If you have any other questions feel free to ask Tableturf seems deceptively simple from the outset, but there’s a lot to learn.

@StarPoint Not your fault. I appreciate your help. It's possible, there may be no changing the fact that this game feels like a scam to me. XD I think I have to give up.🤣
Splatoon 3 update download is available for NA region. After the download completes, a prompt in the upper left says DLC or content will be availble on release date. I think that's the first time I've seen that message after downloading an udate.
Wow, some huge balance changes. Crab Tank taking twice or even three times amount of damage from other specials is gonna be a game changer. It’s smart that they nerfed Crab without actually nerfing it’s offensive capabilities. Hopefully this means the special will finally not be the full meta.
Big Swig getting double object damage is great. It’s definitely a weapon that should have lower player damage due to its size so I think making it more effective against Ink walls and beakons is a good move.
Several stages are getting terrain changes, some of them to make charger weapons not as effective. I really hope this means we have more viable routes and not as many choke points, but that remains to be seen. I’m glad they’re toning down the charger advantages, though.
Finally, I think burst bombs getting a slight nerf is smart. They feel just a bit too spammable so I’m glad they’re just slightly increasing the amount of recharge time.
Overall, I think this is a pretty great patch. It remains to be seen until tomorrow what the terrain changes look like, but the Crab nerf alone makes this an incredibly substantial update. It looks like a ton of bugs with the Tenta Brella were fixed as well, so hopefully it’s actually functional now. I kinda wish more weapons themselves received changes, but they usually save those for the midseason patch. I’m honestly really interested to see where the meta develops from here thanks to Crab being knocked down a notch or two.

This particular game is my first entry into the Splatoon series, I've had it since launch.
Here's all the Splatfest teams I was on (and the titles I ended up with):
Splatfest Demo: Paper Champion (I like to draw and I used to enjoy the Paper Mario series)
Splatfest 1: Grub Ruler (I couldn't eat any of the island's fruits or veggies because of the textures)
Splatfest 2: Grass Ruler +2 (Bulbasaur was my first Pokémon in Blue, and I planned to pick Sprigatito in Violet at the time)
Splatfest 3: Sweet Ruler +2 (I can't handle spicy or sour foods that much, again because of my sensitive taste buds)
Splatfest 4: Dark Chocolate Ruler (It's supposed to be the healthiest of the three chocolate types, I heard; my doctor said she prefers white chocolate more but supported me anyway)
I've got mixed feelings on this patch. Only one main weapon change is pretty disappointing (even if it is a buff to one of my personal favourite weapons) and not directly touching Splash OR Crab over 6 months after they were shown to be clearly busted is still incredibly frustrating.
BUT.
The buffs they made to the damage of certain specials against Crab could be enough of an indirect nerf to push it out of top-tier contention (especially when Ultra Stamp does TRIPLE damage good lord 0_0) and, most crucially, they're changing the layout of the stages so that they no longer give long-range weapons (Chargers, Crab Tank, etc.) an unfair advantage which, if handled correctly, could be GAME CHANGING.
There's a bunch of other cool little bits of info in here as well (like catalogue items appearing in the Shell-Out Machine if you missed them during the season which is a very nice addition) but overall, I'm both concerned and hopeful for the coming months. I suppose we'll only truly see the impact of all this stuff on Wednesday but for right now....I'm pretty satisfied
