Late

Played Tower Control for an hour and noticed that someone named "Ayhan (NL)" was in the opposing team two times. Someone from here? I know some of you added NL to your names.

Check out my Gaming Nonograms thread here on Nintendo Life if you are into Picross or other similar games.

@NEStalgia The DJ is her producer and... well, the guy who wrote and recorded and produced all her music and lyrics and... everything. I suppose you could say he's the Kyary behind the Kyary; the actual Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Or you could say he's Yasutaka Nakata. Because that's who he actually is. He's written the majority of songs for quite a few J-Pop acts, the most notable other example probably being Perfume, but also include MEG, Ami Suzuki (who incidentally was the DJ linked earlier) and capsule (which is basically a personal project).

I met him in a club once, and he gave me his number. I then texted it and... never got a reply, which makes my not-so-subtle humble-brag somewhat pathetic and actually humbling. Not so humbling that I won't mention it at any opportunity, however.

I've been a bit grumpy with him recently though, as the last capsule album was sort of generic EDMey, and the last Perfume album was also sort of generic EDMey. And while I don't follow Kyary as closely, the bits of her music I've caught recently have... also come across as generic EDMey.

Anyway, he recently did a joint tour with KPP, which was a bit odd because he wrote all her songs anyway so his presence couldn't really bring much new to her music. He thew in a few DJey bits here any there, but it was mainly just Kyary with less pomp and circumstance. Anyway, that's where the pictures are from.

capsule also employs a similar DJ/Frontwoman format, but I thought Kyary would be a bit more familiar reference.

Anyway, sorry for going massively off topic and having a self-indulgent ramble. Back to Splatoon!

@NEStalgia The in-game instruction book describes the Salmonid activity as something like the real-life equivalent salmon run, a return to their grounds in order to defend it or something (also the in-game reason the mode is not always available). Their assault on the Inklings is described as defense of their turf, though they always quit after a set amount of time for some reason. Regarding the Salmonids themselves, they're described as something of a barbarian/warrior tribe. The Snatchers, in particular, are actually trying to earn the right to fight on the front lines by proving their mettle on the battlefield, so fighting is obviously a big part of their lifestyle. One sunken scroll also describes how, despite their crudeness, Salmonids take extreme care of their weapons, even the lowly frying pans. I wouldn't be surprised if they, like Inklings tend to do, see this as a sport.

One more tidbit: Steelhead bombs are powered by their explosive saliva.

@Late I got a friend request from "Niam NL," not sure who that is either. Either some people from here, or someone is starting their own clan using our name!

Got married.

@Dev I don't get it. The Octarians have relatively advanced technology, complex machines, arguably AI. The Salmonids have crude metal bucket machines piloted by a fish. Yet the Salmonids seem like unstoppable onslaughts and the Octarians pushovers

@Maxz Ahhh interesting. I'm pretty new to the whole J-Pop scene but I have some familiarity with all of that. I imagine the music was actually better on that DJ tour than with all the fluffery around it. Too much gimmick, IMO detracts from what's otherwise a good act. Just from the still shots, it seems like a lot more approachable a show than the over the top dramatics she's normally associated with. I'm all for a good show, but the whole decora & floating eyeballs thing is a bit much.

Of course, some of Pearl & Marina's stuff is generic EDMey....kind of makes you wonder, huh? Actually, did we ever find out who the VAs are for P&M? I found it interesting last time, there wasn't much on Marie's voice, but I found some video of Keity.Pop performing and......she's basically Callie IRL And those two seem to love their association with C&M so I'd be pretty curious who P&M are.

@Dev I'm pretty sure the first game's scrolls stated humans were simply killed off by rising seawater (aka global warming), while we were wrapped up in inane political debates. Doubt Salmonids had a part in that... the ''prophecy'' scroll painting them as harbingers of the apocalypse seems to actually apply to the Inklings instead.

Of course they're not interested in conquest... they already own the oceans, a much bigger turf than anything Inklings could dream of. But they are interested in battle, so if anything Salmonids would rather keep those scrappy Inklings around for their own entertainment.

@Nestalgia It's mostly just sheer numbers that make Salmonids such a threat. Plus, Octarians have very limited resources to work with despite their intelligence, whereas Salmonids have an almost unlimited amount of salvageable equipment under the sea.

If we were to get all Starcraft-y in here, Inklings are basically Terrans, Octarians are Protoss, and Salmonids are the Zerg.

@Nicolai I played against the same guy, I think.

I'm really tempted to change my name to our newfound clan.

I'll think on it a bit more.

My son is new to Splatoon... Question for you all. When in Turf War, there are several courses that seem impossible to reach the enemy's starting area/spawn point. Is that the case or is he just missing how to get there?

@nattyville It's purposely done so you can get out of your own area somewhat. In the first game every stage had it so you could get into the base and for weaker players it got frustrating that you took one step out then splat.

Some maps have the spawn point in a place that's unreachable.

@NEStalgia Well, the Octarians might pose a threat if it wasn't for their unfortunate habit of camping out in underground domes with filled platforms specifically designed to give a single Inkling major advantages. On the opposite side of the spectrum are Salmonids, who wait until the Inklings are completely surrounded by hazardous water on the most dangerous, frustrating, and least user-friendly locations, and then surround and outnumber them with unfair tactics and impossible situations.

In conclusion, Octarians are actually a race of morons that merely inherented a bunch of junk they don't understand how to use, meanwhile salmonids must have been studying war tactics for years.

I finally started actually playing Salmon Run today. Think I chose a good time for it, as these weapons seem pretty good (Flingza Roller, Aerospray MG, Splattershot Pro, Jet Squelcher). And while I was lukewarm on the idea of a pure co-op mode, this is indeed quite fun. It's amazing that Splatoon's weird core mechanics can apply so well to different modes.

If you start checking the scrolls, the lore behind Splatoon goes quite deep. The Octarians aren't trying to steal the Zapfish to cause damage - they basically live underground with no way to produce energy. The Inklings are described as extremely lazy and only worried for Turf War and fashion, and well.... you're poaching the unborn Salmon during the Salmon Run, either to produce energy or to feed them to Mr. Grizz.

There is a lot of nightmare inducing stuff.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Heh heh, did I say morons? I meant to say... proud and underprivileged heroes! I only meant to say I felt sorry for them, haha (I'm going to squid hell now, aren't I?)

If we're on the subject of lore, is here an in-game reason that Inklings drown in six inches of water?

Switch FC: SW-5152-0041-1364
Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

meleebrawler

@Luna_110 Adding onto the horror, in the final Octoling level, Marie utters a chillingly insensitive remark to Agent 4: "Send these losers back to the Stone Age!", implying a complete disregard for the troubles of other societies. So I guess Inklings are basically a race of Kirbies; they'll treat you perfectly fine if you befriend or help them, but inconvenience or threaten them and THEY WILL DESTROY YOU WITH NO MERCY.

That said... eggs in this game make about as much sense as Yoshi's. Why are they just lying around everywhere in Octarian bases? Why does a Flyfish, which is just a Smallfry in an aircraft, drop golden ones when regular ones don't? Unless... Salmonids themselves use them as power sources... bah.

@JasmineDragon Eh, mostly it's just ink dissolves in water, Inklings are made of ink (which is how they slip through grates in squid form). Now that opens another question of why the air microbes cleaning up the maps after every match don't eat the Inklings, but I suppose their kid form is just solid enough to prevent that.

I've been playing single player and some of things I noticed look as though they'll be very useful especially in ranked battles. For example, I haven't tested it out in multiplayer but in single player I found out you can destroy the toxic mist sub by destroying something in the centre of the mist.
