There’s negativity around every game nowadays. It’s always something.

It’s so prevalent you can no longer rely on controversy to discern good from bad. There’s so many ppl who live their lives in an endless pursuit of criticism for video games that what may have started as a fairly reasonable but minor or circumstantial complaint gets ballooned into a game breaking reason to avoid at all costs.

Combine that with the $60 price warriors, the “I hate ports” army and the annual “Zelda is overrated” hate train, not to mention the fact this game is genuinely more divisive with controls that aren’t as easy to use as in most other games and is more linear (which isn’t as popular as open world games), and you end up with quite the circus.

Zelda is like starwars in that nobody hates it more than the fans.

No gliding in this game. That's in the next home console release.

So much this. There are genuine criticisms out there, including this game. If I'd listened to the internet on the mountains made out of molehills however, I would have never 1. Played and actually enjoyed Metroid: Other M (even if the plot is meh at times, I've seen worse), 2. Tried Paper Mario: Color Splash (Another good game there despite the card system being bleh, and 3. Picked up the Switch version of Ys IX.

@Tyranexx I wasn't even thinking of gliding, I just assumed there were platforms there out of view, not noticing the clawshot targets at all. lol

I think genuine performance issues beyond a reasonable margin of error are a legitimate concern, but what gets me is the price complaints, the "30fps in the year of our Lord 2021 9is unacceptable" quips, and the "all ports must launch with an orange clearance sticker" logic, because obviously everyone is morally entitled to it, even when supply and demand don't warrant it.

And they're not buying the game. Oh no. Only "idiots and sheep" would do that. So they're not interested. But they're gonna make sure you hear them go off about it in every single article leading up to launch. Every. Single. One. The games they're not buying are all they ever seem to wanna talk about.

Metroid Dread is gonna be "how is a 2D indie game worth $60". Sonic Colors is gonna be, "30fps? HARD PASS" and Ni No Kuni 2 will be, "I can buy this for $5.67, why would I pay full price on Switch?".

If even games undeserving of such harsh scrutiny cannot escape unscathed, Skyward Sword never stood a chance.

The framerate complaints is what irritates me...people told me Monster Hunter Rise on Switch is unplayable because it's 30fps...seriously? lol

As for ports, remakes, or whatever you wanna call this one...it just depends when it comes to price. I will say the recent HD Zelda ports or whatever seem underwhelming when it comes to new stuff. Then there's that stupid decision to lock a feature behind an amiibo. >.>

Whether it's unplayable is up to the individual. Nobody can make that claim for others- certainly for themselves but never for others.

MH Stories 2 does have framerate issues on Switch. Most certainly. But I have found it perfectly playable. The question for some won't be whether it's playable but whether it's aggravating enough they won't want to. Even so, even if I didn't find it playable, that should have no affect on anyone else other than me. The problem is with those which then use their opinions to bash others over the head with if they don't kneel and confess, "yes master, it's unplayable but I am a lowly fool with no other option so I must suffer this broken game".

As for price, everyone values each and every game differently. There's no right or wrong answer. But that's exactly it right there- it's a personal choice of valuation. Many will declare games "objectively" too expensive as if they speak for everyone and their voice carries authority over ruling the law of supply and demand, and basic economic principles such as, "games don't drop price out of charity just because they're older, they do so to increase demand when needed".

Amiibo, same thing. You may have a personal opinion on it. The issue is when objective declarations are made on behalf of everyone. I, for one, see no issue whatsoever. Amiibo are supposed to have content locked behind them. That's their whole purpose. Figure with content. And a convenient cheat that lets you escape dungeons when you have a single heart left is not something that would have ever been included by default, so it's the perfect candidate for an amiibo, just like scanning for hearts in Mario Odyssey.

Part of the issue is what's been described already. But the other part is the manner in which things are said. If ppl calmly explained their feelings with nuance in a non-hostile manner, I think a lot more benefit of the doubt would be given.

Any awesome-looking Switch release is going to have a metric ton of nastiness spewed at it by a certain subset of gamer trolls who literally seem to have nothing better to do with their free time than troll Nintendo communities.

Well I mean, Monster Hunter Rise is literally unplayable to me, and that's an objective truth.

Because I haven't purchased it.

I have been reading this site for some years now, and I rarely post, but I needed to chime in regarding the criticism.

What I'll say is not the absolute and only truth. But the backlash against the original Skyward Sword wasn't a general Internet negativity thing.

I barely played games from 2013 through 2019. I had purchased Skyward Sword for Wii that year and spent 6 years to open it, so it's not like I had recent games to compare it with, and it was a real letdown.

It's still an amazing game, fantastic dungeons, atmosphere, love the graphics, story, items. And breaking some conventions as well, paving the road for BotW. But it's the first Zelda game I played where I would be annoyed during every playthrough.

Everything that came to Switch was not, in my opinion, Quality of Life, rather something that should have been there in the first iteration. And the game tries so, so hard to make it easy on you that many times I would have been insulted. Also, it was literally the first (and only/last) time I have been annoyed by motion controls.

It's not a terrible game, but I disagree that it was a 9/10 or 10/10 game.

That's my opinion, so I'm sure most of the critics come from those issues. Of course there will be some criticism just for criticism sake.

And having played it so recently, I would never spend $60 on it since there's no new content. You look at maybe SM3DW, and I think for that price it would have deserved a little.

@Joeynator3000 Kinda figured something like that TBH. I was pulling your leg. Been ages since I've gamed as late as the timestamp in your original post though lol.

@JaxonH I wasn't criticizing performance complaints; until a point, those are reasonable. Though in my humble opinion, outside of certain genres performance and FPS aren't very important to me unless the entire game is chugging along at only a few frames per second and there are bugs galore. To me, 30 FPS is fine in most circumstances, especially if it's mostly set. I will truly never understand those who think graphics are paramount to the experience. To me, gameplay, a solid story (depending on genre), intuitive controls, and at times the soundtrack are usually more important.

I don't get the price complaints most of the time either. Do some of the Switch ports come off as lazy? At times, yes. But there was still plenty of work put in to optimize them to work on the Switch, and in terms of Wii U ports it's clear Nintendo wants to give these games (and their wallets) a second chance. We as consumers, minus the handful of us that may be privy to a game's development process, usually have no idea how much work is put into a game. Besides, such complainers ignore the basic rules of supply and demand.

Tl;Dr - Some people just love to complain and love wasting their lives letting others know about it. I think it's an attention thing, and not just an online malaise.

Not trying to poke the bear, I swear, but I find that people around here are a bit cavalier about the whole "I don't care about FPS!" stuff until you actually have to deal with a game that chugs or struggles back-and-forth, etc.

As humans, I think the vast majority of us would agree that it's super annoying and can hurt the eyes to play a game or watch something that can't get its FPS consistent, and most would prefer at least 30 (though 20 can sometimes work as long as it's consistent).

That being said, I don't even know if this game is 30fps or 60, and I've had no issues with it, really.

@rallydefault Well the game runs at 60fps on docked and handheld mode, so the reason you can’t complain is because the performance is top-notch! On PS5 games now there’s a choice between graphics and performance, and while I don’t have a 4K TV I’d pick frame rate any day.

Nerrel continues his trend of quality, reasonable Nintendo videos (as long as you ignore his Star Fox Zero review lol).

I think it might be because he's one of the only people who treats the weird extra money Nintendo wants from this 10 year old game remaster as more "ugh, this is disappointing and obnoxious to an otherwise fairly quality release" and not "A GIANT BETRAYAL THAT PROVES THE GREED OF NINTENDO!"
