Hello, like many others I am looking for replacements for my Switch joy cons. Unlike many however, it is not because of the stick drift or lack of d-pad. Basically the "R, L, ZR, and ZL" buttons are junk IMO. Especially the smaller "R and L" buttons. I have cracked open both my sets of Joy Cons and replaced all of the sticks due to drift issues, but when I was in there I noticed how frail the mechanics are on the "R, L, ZR, and ZL" buttons actually are. Little tiny springs and small buttons under them. They are just very underwhelming and not up for heavy usage, after time, at all. You can tell just by looking at their guts that they will be prone to issues.
What I am experiencing is that sometimes the buttons simply do not work/activate. I will be honest and say that I can really mash those buttons sometimes when games get intense. BUT I feel like this should have been taken into consideration when designing the joy cons.
My kids both have aftermarket controllers. One has a PowerA version of the pro-controller with a blue Pokemon graphic on it. The other has the PowerA gamecube style (wireless) with a Pikachu graphic. Both of these controllers have much more robust "R, L, ZR, and ZL" buttons. They are larger and just feel far more solid. I much prefer using these controllers now because of this. My only issue is that my favorite controller configuration is the joy cons style when they are not attached in "handheld" mode. I love having one of each in each hand. I love that my hands do not have to be near each other to play. I LOVED the joy cons because of this, but I am really disappointed in the weak performance of the "R, L, ZR, and ZL" buttons.
I am very surprised to not find others talking about this issue anywhere online. Can anyone recommend any other options? The Hori Split Pad set up is close to what I am looking for, but they can only be used handheld mode of which is a deal breaker for me. Does anyone make a beefier version of the joy cons that can be used when not in handheld mode? Can anyone help? Thanks for reading!
@spencervex So far, I haven't seen anyone praise third party joycons or say they have some. I think Wulff Den maybe did a review for some? - Wulff Den on youtube.
Those 3rd party requires a dongle to connect to the Switch so getting them doesn't mean you connect directly to the Switch either. So there are trade offs and if you take the Switch out of the Dock how are you going to use third party hardware that requires a USB dongle to work? I don't recall 3rd party connecting directly to the Switch either. If so please link the 3rd party hardware that does it.
@spencervex Actually, SwitchForce reminds me, no third party Switch controllers appear to have all the features joycons & procons have. Sometimes they cut rumble or motion control, so you have to check the features closely, because I've noticed companies appear to purposely hide the features or neglect to list them. Actually, I recall one 3rd party made joycons with a dpad, but they the drew lots of power shorting handheld playtime.
