@gamerguy2356 The soundtrack for an ''okay'' indie game at best, the soundtrack you're probably not going to ever listen to again? If you can even remember it that is. Nah, not in my opinion.
What's the price on Switch by the way? $30 or $40?
I'm just curious if this has been patched to run any better yet? I'm incredibly disappointed that the debut was so bad and I cancelled my pre-order based on the tech bugs highlighted in the reviews, but I'm particularly sensitive to poor performance and hiccups. Does it actually run well now or have the devs abandoned it altogether?
Have any of you been playing this a lot post patch? I've heard a lot of people saying it's worth a shot now that the issues have been addressed but there are still some that say it's not quite worth it yet and needs 1 more patch. I'm thinking of picking this up with my gold coins but I'm still kinda on the fence.
I have been interested in RiME since I first heard it was coming to Switch. This is the type of game I love so I was very disappointed when the Switch version reviews started rolling in and EVERYONE talked about the awful framerate. For $30 and with such poor quality I decided to pass. Then we got the 1.0.2 patch seemingly out of the blue and my interest was renewed. Looking around the web you could find opinions all over the place; where the game was perfectly fixed, not fixed at all, or somewhere in between. I decided to finally give it a shot.
I spent my weekend playing RiME 1.0.2. I probably put about 15-20 hours into the game over the past 3 days and I played the game docked the entire time. I managed to collect everything and when I finished I was only missing 5 achievements. Here are my opinions of the game after a pretty thorough play-through.
RiME is beautiful in many ways. The art style is gorgeous, blending a Wind Waker type cell shading with a Skyward Sword type pastel palate. The forest level and the rain level are both particularly beautiful and immersive. I loved the look of this game.
The game play, for the most part, was easily controllable. There were some instances where the camera got a bit wonky when the character is up against a wall. There were other instances where the default angle of the camera in open spaces seemed ever so slightly off. I don't know if that was a creative choice, but it was noticeable from time to time. Yet these are two minor gripes. Neither one was a major hindrance to game play.
The Puzzles were fine. Some were incredibly easy, others somewhat hard but none made me want to rip my hair out due to frustration. As far as puzzles go this game is slightly above average.
The story is where RiME shines! The main character only makes the most basic of utterances...a yell, a cry, a bit of singing...but this didn't stop RiME from telling a moving and engrossing story. The story gets told slowly, using various different methods. There are some cut-scenes that fill you in a bit. There are collectibles that you know must be tied to the story but aren't sure how. There are these stations where, when found, give you a descriptive painting of various events. There are also enemies and friends you meet along the way and by following their actions they slowly fill you in to what's going on. Without any real use of words, you figure out the story pretty well before the game drops the big reveal near the end. And while you may have already figured out most of what it tells you, it is done in such an emotional way that it makes all the time spent getting to it feel well worth every second. RiME's story is simply fantastic!
Now on to the elephant in the room...The framerate.
RiME's framerate, even with version 1.0.2, is really bad! It's not on the unplayable level of WWE 2K18 but if that's the best compliment a game's framerate can get, you know it's in trouble. There are MAJOR framerate dips at every level of this game. When running around there are dips, during cut-scenes there are dips, even in the closing credits, when scrolling through the names of people involved with the game THERE WERE DIPS! They would usually last anywhere from 1-6 seconds and they occurred probably every 10-20 minutes. These dips were very annoying. Whatever the patch did, it wasn't nearly enough. However, like I said, these issues did not make the game unplayable. I am very forgiving about framerate and this game tested my limits. I was able to power through it due to the amazing story but If you are even close to a stickler for framerate this game is not for you.
I found RiME to be a beautiful game that was a master of storytelling and atmosphere. Without the framerate issues this game would be a must buy for anyone even slightly interested in the genre and worthy of a 9/10. However the technical issues are such a major disruption to the overall enjoyment of the game that I dropped its rating 2 stars on the sole basis of poor framerate. RiME version 1.0.2 deserves a 7/10.
@JHDK I also thank you for this write up. I'm one of those that don't care as much about frame rate at least depending on the type of game. If this was a fast twitchy game I would definitely say no but given the type of game I will probably pick this up on a good sale now so thanks.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
Thanks for that. It's a game I really like the look of but can't justify a purchase until it runs better. Cheers for the heads up that it still doesn't!
