Topic: Recommendation for games like Nier: Automata

I have been playing Nier: Automata and enjoying the game and story a lot, but really dislike the constant sexualized image of the main character, and how you can pretty much see up her skirt all the time. It just makes it annoying to play, to the point that I am thinking of playing something else. But, I still love the story and world a lot.

I am wondering if anyone can recommend anything that has these characteristics:

-long (30+ hour playtime)
-story driven
-at least somewhat philosophical (not necessary but a plus)
-interesting world (ideally more than just monsters and nature, but again that varies. The world in Nier is very rich)
-ideally not turn based combat
-partially open world
-prefer sci fi settings, but again not mandatory
-prefer something a bit "dark", but not horror

It doesn't fit all these marks, but I am looking at Xenoblade Chronicles. I also may just finish Nier because I really like the gameplay, I just keep getting annoyed every time I play.

Cheers.

RR529

Maybe try Astral Chain?

It's made by the same developer as Automata (Platinum).

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@EaglyBird Less darkness is ok, I mostly just don't want a very...bubbly cartoony type of game, since I am less interested in that vibe. Xenoblade really has been catching my eye, and this pushes me further in that direction.

@EaglyBird Pretty sold on Xenoblade, it looks awesome after looking a bit farther into it. And I only have a switch, which makes this type of game more limited for me.

I would definitely recommend The Outer Worlds, as it checks all these marks. And it doesn't have pointless, gratuitous sexualisation of the female characters, which I agree is the only real flaw in Nier Automata.

The Outer Worlds is available on Switch, but the port looks a bit rough on the graphical side, though AFAIK it's still perfectly playable. But if you have a PC, they just released a new remastered version of it a few months ago, and that one looks gorgeous.

I feel the same way about nudity/sexualisation in games. Dont get me wrong, I’m not a square or a prude, I love nudity and sexualisation as much as anyone else, just not in my games. I play a lot of shmups and that genre is plagued by this.

@Polvasti Good call on Outer Worlds, I've enjoyed it thoroughly on Switch. Although from memory it's more RPG and less action-oriented than Nier. With important stealth elements, but this depends on your character build.
