@Bolt_Strike If the rumours are true based on job listings that this is UE4, that cuts down on development time significantly.
Further, we already know all Pokemon upscale to 4k with minor adjustment, meaning if they chose, a lot of work is cut out redoing the 807+ Pokemon for HD.
So that leaves characters, modelling them and the world, designing a flow, story, new Pokemon and modelling those, sound design, localisation, testing, making new moves, new abilities, new villains, attractive starters and legendaries which is easily a lot of work (Xerneas and Yveltal took 18 months apparently), designing a world, new items, progression system, post-game content.
A lot to do yes, but this is also 2017. GameFreak isn't the rag tag team anymore.
Further to that point, not having confidence in a game that hasn't been in development since Generation 6 BEGAN would give, what, 4-5 years?
Gen 1 began in 1990. Look how that turned out. Time != quality unfortunately.
Plus Nintendo has stated 2018 or later for Pokemon, so there is clearly some faith in upper management of each company involved that it is doable, enough to the point Nintendo has told investors that date, at which point you know its serious since its a publicly traded company.
Not even Bayonetta 3 has a YEAR yet. Fire Emblem is allegedly this year, yet we haven't seen that yet, but heard about nearly 13 months ago. When do you think they started that? After Fates? Would 2 years be enough for a new home console HD entry in a franchise that hasn't been in HD?
It's designing the world that's going to be the biggest problem. Large scale and more open ended areas, the kind that's expected of them in this game, take a very long time to make even for seasoned developers. BotW and Mario Odyssey took that long and those teams have 20 more years of experience with console development than Game Freak. With Game Freak just starting out on an HD console, I have 0 confidence in their ability to make a region worthy of a console in 2-3 years. They couldn't even make one worthy of the 3DS in that timeframe and HD takes a lot more work.

I personally disagree with this point as it assumes Gamefreak are alone in developing Pokemon for the Switch, lets not forget that not only does Nintendo own part of Gamefreak.. but The Pokémon Company which has worked on console game worlds previously. Plus there is you know... Nintendo to for them to call on. While it's true working with HD graphics on a newer console can be harder work, lets not forget that development tools for new consoles are VASTLY superior to those available before (especially with all devs that have worked on Switch so far talking about how easy it is to get games running quickly). I think it all comes down to
Personally, I think it all comes down to how far along Gamefreak is in developing the new Pokémon and what resources they're putting into. If Gamefreak had indeed begun working on Pokémon Switch at the same time as Sun/Moon, then it's likely they've had ample time to make progress.
@8-Bit_Superman Actually, in the Sun/Moon files most of the pokémon/character assets are HD ready but are effectively downscaled for the 3DS. While these would still need a lot of work for a Switch release, it's not the case of 3DS quality models on the Switch... but HD models on a non-HD handheld being moved to a HD console.

@Tyranexx I think one of the issues is that they want to release Pokemon during the holidays. They're not going to delay it for 6 months. It needs to be a holiday title for whatever reason. So in their case, delaying it probably means delaying the game for 12 months. And if it only needs another months or so of polishing in theory, I'm not sure they're willing to do that. And they need to 20 million Switches this year, somehow. I can understand why they would be pushing it to come out this year, from a business perspective at least.
But I agree, I just want to have a polished experience. Especially since they talked about how this would be a departure from the previous games.

Game Freak always has help from Nintendo though, Nintendo's teams are constantly assisting them with Pokemon games. So where were they when XY and SM were being developed and their overworlds were really sparse and simplistic?
@Bolt_Strike I think the big positive and reason for optimism with Pokémon is that it’s such an important game for Nintendo they will - if they feel Game Freak isn’t doing a good enough job or understand how to technically make a large vibrant world - pull other teams off their games to work on the game.
We saw this with Monolith being pulled in to work with BoTW and Retro being pulled in to work on MK 8.
XC3 can be delayed by 6 months (or 2 years) but Pokémon is one of those ‘nothing stops this train’ games.
It’ll be a really good game. It won’t satisfy my dreams (or anyone on this forum) but it’ll be technically fine, long enough and polished enough that the vast majority of people who buy the game will love it.
@-Green- i think they should do that at least to make gen 7 3 years i would love pokemon shuffle port too.I want them to take there time also have gen 1 and gen 4 remakes too.

@YummyHappyPills Doesn't matter. That's the result of localisation. I don't think it was ever their intent to delay the European release. If they could, it would've been a holiday title.
@Octane Yeah apparently the concept of a EU localisation (Even though our English is actually the American version) only became a thing when they decided to put every language into every cart regardless.
Even then, the only two we got at the same time as the rest of the world was XY and USUM.

I just hope the core of Pokemon, that I have loved for all these years remains with the Switch game, and the Pokemon Bank comes to the Switch as well, allowing me to continue enjoying and growing my collection that dates back the the GBA and Gamecube games. Yes, I have Pokemon that I have brought all the way up from gen 3 to 7 and want that trend to continue.
My wish is that the Pokemon game on Switch ups the difficulty a bit, as the last couple sets of games have been too easy(in terms of single player), not only due to the modern EXP share, but with most NPC trainers having at most 2 or 3 un-evolved and lower level Pokemon. We don't need it to be a hard game, but it also doesn't need to be dumbed down to the level that you can play it in your sleep.
In an ideal world for me, they would finally ditch the "silent protagonist" arc and either try to write a main character, or allow you to make dialogue choices from time to time and base the story on that.
From a gameplay perspective, we need better online match making. We need a dedicated VGC tournament ladder, but also the ability to utilize popular fan rules, such as singles 6v6, with logical ban lists. There is simply no logical reason to ban Pokemon like Mew and Celebi but allow stuff like Mewtwo and Raquaza. Also, there is no reason to require Pokemon to be caught or bred in game. For official VGC rules, they could simply word it as being possible to obtain in the game (not hacked, no moves exclusive to previous games). There is simply no reason to not allow my Shiny Milotic or Altaria in 7th gen VGC just because I bred them in 6th gen(for example).
Also, they have been on the right track the last few games with their improvements of Pokemon breeding and introducing hyper training. I would like to see that trend continue, with better ways to level Pokemon up(in the post game for multiplayer purposes), and hyper training being based on BP, rather than some obscure item only very rarely obtained(or make that item easily repeatably obtainable, like heart scales)
But all in all, while I would love to see the series further refined and updated, I absolutely do not want to see a full reboot or to have Pokemon Bank abandoned and Pokemon from previous generations left to rot on the 3DS forever. If mega evolutions or Z-moves were dropped, I could understand it because of the power creep they have caused, but I would rather them be re-balanced than simply dropped like Triple and Rotation battles were.
I cannot stress this enough, I do not want the series totally rebooted. I do not want the gameplay completely changed, I do not want my Pokemon from previous games abandoned on those games.
For those who want something different from Pokemon, I would like to think we will eventually get more Pokemon spinoff games exploring other genres of gaming. That can be done without abandoning the main series. And for those who do want entirely new Pokemon, with none of the old ones, I suggest you play a different game altogether. Because that is what you really want.

@Snaplocket I can understand that. I do like the customization a lot. But I also feel that the silent protagonist really limits what they can do with the narrative of the single player. BW/BW2 and more so in SM/USUM it felt to me like I was a side character in "my" own story. XY and older games where there is much less of a story it isn't a noticable but I wouldn't really consider less of a story a good thing. But that is again, just my personal preference. I know a lot of people just want to play for the gameplay alone and don't care too much about flavor - or prefer to imagine their own story.

@Snaplocket They could take the Mass Effect route, although on a simpler scale, and have a couple different voice actors, if they did indeed choose to do that. I think they had 2 or 3 each for male and female. The character can have minimal lines too that is totally fine by me. But I personally think there needs to be enough reaction to ongoing events to make the character seem like they are actually there. Can't just have that derpy smile through almost every scene and to also say a few things from time to time when something is happening. I felt the same problem with Link in BotW, his silentness hindered him. Frequent jokes about the protagonist not saying much just seem painfully out of place these days.
Of course all this is just my opinion.
