Obviously unconfirmed, but this supposed leak is at least drawn in the style of Sun and Moon’s. My first impression is that I would have to go another gen without a cool grass starter if this were true.
It occurs to me that this series has been around so long that I could build an all-turtle party. Problem is, I would have to include Turtonator and Shuckle, which isn’t happening.
@YummyHappyPills Lapras is a good pull! And huh, didn’t know that about Mudkip. I think they kind of made it its own thing though, like how Treecko is a ‘gekko.’ Anyway, Samurott is the worst starter to me because it could have been a cool otter Pokemon, but it was just bleh and now we’re not getting another one for a long time. The Sun & Moon starters are the only ones where my opinion has really changed any from beginning to fully evolved.
Just look at a line up of the grass Pokemon, how they turn from green to brown from gen 6 on. I’m not jazzed about the prospect of that continuing.
I kinda wish they would stop designing the starters after animals. I mean kudos for holding off on cats until gen 7, but I’d really like to see more fantasy creatures like Bayleef, Mudkip, and Bulbasaur.
I had no problem with any of the starters in the first three generations, though I always found Meganium to be a bit meh.
That all changed with Methane Monkey in Gen IV. There's always been at least one design (starter-wise) that I've disliked aesthetically since, ignoring other things like stat spreads, moves, and typing.
Currently playing: Pokemon Scarlet DLC, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)
@Tyranexx Now that's a water starter I would pick. I like ducky's design there, but I'd choose Kyubey over it assuming their final forms don't change my mind. I practically never pick fire starters too.
@Haru17 Mudkip is based on a real-life creature, the mudpuppy I think.
@YummyHappyPills You're 100% right. The final stage is what really matters, and there have been plenty of times where the starters or middle stages looked awesome and the final stages were meh, or vice-versa. Litten comes to mind for that. Froakie comes to mind for an example of the opposite - Froakie and Frogadier were alright, but Greninja is not only an excellent design, but IMHO one of the best designed Pokemon ever.
That being said, no point in believing these for now until official confirmation. I think we had another supposed "leak" a few weeks ago as well. If these were true though, the water starter looks pretty cool.
I'm not putting my faith into those leaks, but I actually do like the starters. Especially the water and fire ones. Just as long as we don't get any cheesy 80s humanoid nonsense like Incineroar. Good god, that design haunts me even still. lol
I LOVE that bunny, might even be cute enough to get my gf to like the game... For sure the first time since Charmander that I'm not going to be able to pick the type-advantage superior starter because the Fire-dude is so awesome!
I'm certain that even Chikorita and Bulbasaur are based on animals, sauropods and toads respectively. But they do seem to be more creative than a big owl, or a big cat. Even Typhlosion, whatever it is, doesn't seem like a real-life animal, even though it's probably based on some kind of mammal.
And yeah, I too hate the brown designs of the recent grass starters. They just look unappealing.
@MarcelRguez Either that, or a shrew. Though it doesn't help that its Japanese name is derived from porcupine, and the entire thing is classified as a 'Fire Mouse Pokemon'.
@Octane I said the leaks were unconfirmed. Anyway, I guess Bulba is a frog, but it's also very heavy and dinosaur-like. Not to mention the flower part. I meant things like Charmander (dragon) or Turtwig (world turtle) as opposed to souped up animals. I think fantasy or original designs are sort of the point of Pokemon, or at least they used to be. I mean 'Pocket Monsters' and all, not Pocket Monkeys.
