@link3710 Well, that was kinda what ruined the fun in Color Splash as well. Even a simple skill tree (despite every game doing it these days) would be an improvement.
Still looking forward to reading various impressions as that'll help determine when I get this game. IF isn't a question at all unless it's an absolute dumpster fire.
Color Splash wasn't a bad game and had some decent moments, but the battle mechanics definitely needed work. It's not often that it feels like battling in a RPG actively punishes you when you have to literally buy and ration your better moves.
Currently playing: Stray (Switch), Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (AAIC/Switch)
Everyone just needs to come to grips with the fact that Paper Mario is not an RPG series anymore. Nintendo themselves said as much years ago, that Mario and Luigi is their RPG series. Is there any reason to stomp every Goomba in most Mario games? No, just if you want to get them out of the way. And if that is the case here, too, then everyone just needs to try to enjoy the game for what it is and you'll have a much better time with it. Or don't play it. Either way works.
@Xyphon22
Good news is no more grinding EXP.
There always another way to improve character stats without over grinding EXP.
That was pretty tedious to do.
I'm sure the Battle will improve something for Mario even not directly made him strong by HP up or Atk up.
@Xyphon22 Well, difference is that the Mario and Luigi series is presumably dead now, which leaves a giant, Mario RPG-shaped hole in Nintendo's lineup.
Moreover, you don't get experience for killing enemies in Mario platformers, but it's also done and over with in seconds. There's not a minutes long, turn-based ordeal every time you bounce on an enemy's head in a Mario platformer.
It seems like you do get confetti for killing enemies, though, which is important for being able to fully explore the world.

Yeah, pretty much this. The problem isn't that defeating enemies isn't rewarding, it's combination with the long turn-based battle system that makes it annoying. Either make the battles worthwhile, or turn it into a platformer with quick kills.

Right, it's not a platformer, either. It's an adventure game with a unique battle system. Zelda has longer battles with common enemies that require strategy and multiple hits that grant you nothing except maybe a rupee or five. You may think it's annoying and long-winded, which is fine and a reasonable belief, but I think adding a puzzle element to battles sounds exciting and I'm looking forward to it. And like Ralizah said, they are not pointless, you just get things other than EXP.
I can't think of a better metaphor for it. Just because they get much more reasonable, nicer square pegs each time, doesn't change that they're still working with a round hole.
Might as well port over colour splash and wolly world. I don't see the point of them dying on the Wii u if it's debatable that their successors are better.
@Xyphon22 I'm willing to bet that the average fight in a Zelda game is way quicker than in Paper Mario, if only for the fact that it's in real time. And most enemies can be defeated in a single hit too.
The problem with these puzzle battles is that they're not difficult either. Don't get me wrong, I was looking forward to Color Splash, but it was the same boring fight, every single time. Yeah, the first dozen times or so you're figuring how it works. But since the game needs to be playable for a two-year-old those battles hardly ever become real puzzles. And I think that's my biggest criticism with the current system. They don't know what they want this game to be. And if you say that it's its own original thing, then fine, but I don't think it's working, nor is it very good at the moment.
And yeah, you get confetti, but last time it was paint, and they introduced an enemy that could undo all your progress when it came to painting the levels. And that was a terrible design decision as well. So I'm not holding out hope it's going to be any better in that regard this time around.
Hopefully, the treehouse footage can address people's concerns .... Not having played any previous Paper Mario, I'm happy with what I've seen of this one, though
Just finished watching the Nintendo Treehouse footage. Yeah there's no experience points, but we do at least get a lot of coins for efficient play. Oh and I'm REALLY thankful that they finally ditched the stickers!
By the way, the game's available for preorder on the Nintendo eShop if you're interested. No double coins though, but what can you do?
@BruceCM Preload have been up since the announcement in May. I was going to get digital for this too (physical + digital) but after Xenoblade appeared very fast (delivery was much faster than I expected), I decided to just go for physical.
