@Magician @Wargoose Pricing of PS5/Series X and the upcoming lineup for all 3 (PS5, Series X, Switch) will be key to what happens next.

  • High price for next gen + strong Switch lineup = Switch dominates
  • High price for next gen + weak Switch lineup = People trade in their Switch for next gen
  • Low price for next gen + strong Switch lineup = All 3 does well though next gen does better because it's new
  • Low price for next gen + weak Switch lineup = People trade in their Switch for next gen though fewer than the other weak Switch lineup case

Exactly! Give people a reason to keep playing or in some cases even buy a Switch. Imo, they need a surprise announcement or three before the holidays. And I think we have a chance at that still.

@rockodoodle - Casual gamers already have every reason to purchase a Switch. All the best-selling Nintendo franchises are already well represented on Switch. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Smash, Mario Kart, and Animal Crossing. There isn't a game Nintendo could shadow drop between now and Chrismas that would dissuade a teenager from picking the PS5 or Series X over a Switch.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,251 games (as of April 24th, 2024)

For the investment during tough economic times? I guess only time will tell, but I think they should empty the bucket, or at least make some announcements for spring/summer. Imo, mk doesn't count, given that it's six years old already. I know things are hit & miss, but a new franchise or two could help also.

@rockodoodle Switch is a tremendous good investiment with the current line-up and only will get better. We are in the third year of the console. Most of the impressive games came in the third year, historically.
Bayonetta 3 is caming for example.
That guy is understimating Animal Crossing, that don't had his first Christmas yet too, where their numbers will really skyrocket.
When nintendo put a nintendo direct, this year, probably will do the next gen flop.

Didn’t slow down sales during the pandemic.

@korosanbo Oh joy, a bunch of games I've already played! As if the Switch hasn't already had that problem enough for me. Just sayin'.

2016: Nintendo's silence is really annoying. Nintendo should go third party.
2017: Shut up and take my money, Nintendo!
March 2018: Nintendo's silence is really annoying. Without Switch pro, Nintendo's doomed.
Aug 2018: WTF Nintendo, you're trying to kill my wallet in Sept, I can't buy ALL of this right now!
2020: Nintendo's silence is really annoying....

Nintendo does really need to fix their pacing, though. Stops and starts hurt positive reception, but we're smack in between Sony revealing PS5 and MS revealing XSeX. Why WOULD Nintendo dump the good information only to get lost in the wave of "next gen" announcements. They should have had a direct in late Winter/Early spring. But right now is a terrible time to do it if there was no E3 to coordinate it with. At this point I assume the "usual" late sept/early Oct Direct is the one that will exist. That puts it after everyone else unloads the goods and just before purchase decisions on PS5/XSeX get made.

Sounds like a plan, @NEStalgia.... Could still have a trailer just pop up for a game soon, as well?

@NEStalgia you really think July will not have a direct? So, why the big games all prefered wait instead do their announces theimselves? Nobody give up from the nintendo direct be their big reveal. Even with all the problems of this crisis, I don't think they will leat all to August. Can happen, I know, but Paper Mario was announced in May, will be launched after June and will not have be in a direct, even a direct just to itself?

@korosanbo your so right. I should’ve sold my dead console and bought these again for full price for the switch

This has never been a problem for me. Sure, it's nice to know what's coming, but I'm always so invested in what games are available now to be concerned about the future. Granted I don't own a PS4, XB1 or have a modern PC, so all of those games are new to me. As are some of the PS3 titles as I didn't own that many PS3 games. But still, I can't imagine having nothing to play and waiting for the next release, just me though. I always encourage people to open themselves to as many genres as possible, gaming more fun that way imo.

@FlashBoomerang with nintendo id never say never... They do things suddenly without warning or logic often. But personally I don't think they'll do a direct in July. They have a tough position with competitors in the spotlight with new hardware. If that brought out any new games in July it might just get lost in the background. By fall, more attention will be on them as the "newness" if the upcoming hardware is less interesting in media and social.

If i were nintendo, I'd definitely wait for a greater impact later.

This would be some genius level analysis, were it not for the fact that Switch has been in its 4th year since March. Isn't the 4th year traditionally when Nintendo starts to focus on its next hardware and walk away from its current hardware? The sort of period when it might just release something like a Paper Mario game for example?

@NEStalgia I'm not sure we'll hear anything about PS5 in July, Sony does have a PS4 game to promote (Ghost of Tsushima) and an event in August would allow them to counter the Xbox July event (assuming it's late July which seems like a reasonable guess as it would give more attention to Halo 3 and Grounded).

Oh boy here we go PS5 is around the corner and everyone's hopping on the Nintendoomed bandwagon again! Of course news on switch games is slow. What with the apocalypse and all.

@Zeldafan79
I found some upcoming Switch games on playasia without Direct.
I found some surprising titles over there.

@gcunit Is there any evidence for that outside of the Wii U and GBA (which both, incidently, preceded hit consoles but weren't massive hits themselves).

We got Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles (JP) in Wii's fourth year, and Kirby, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Skyward Sword in its fifth year.

3ds was still going strong in its fourth year, getting e.g. Smash Bros and Pokemon ORAS.

Earthbound and Yoshi's Island came out in SNES's fourth and fifth years respectively.

Etc.
