@Wargoose
It doesn’t hurt them either- they just sold over 4 million consoles in the month of April alone and set a new record in May for most sold since DS in 2009. Nobody’s going to sell their consoles because they didn’t have a big direct for a span of 6 months. And any outliers who do is too fickle to bother catering toward anyways.

Just for perspective, we’ve had Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Animal Crossing (which is probably going to be the biggest release of the year on any console), Xenoblade Chronicles, Clubhouse Games, and Paper Mario right around the corner. Heck, they just dropped a trailer and info today. Not to mention a whole slew of amazing, masterpiece 3rd party titles. Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands Pre-Sequel (all 3 with gyro aiming and wow, so good), XCOM 2... and that was just on one single day. We’ve had Metro 2033, Metro Last Light (both with gyro), Saint’s Row 4 (with gyro), Wonderful 101, Trials of Mana, Zombie Army Trilogy (with gyro), we’ve got Burnout Paradise at 1080p 60fps next week (the #1 arcade racer wanted on handheld), Catherine Full Body, Trails of Cold Steel III...

There’s so many amazing games coming out- most are too busy enjoying them. The notion that any significant number of people would completely ignore all the great games (not to mention literally hundreds of amazing games that have released over the last couple years) and just sell their system over wanting a big Direct is a bit undercooked, IMO.

I know people are addicted to announcements like a junkie on heroin (and admittedly I fall into that camp at times), but at the end of the day it’s the games that matter. We’re drowning in games, with like another half dozen bangers due in the next month alone. They’ll be just fine sitting tight for now. And it’s not like no games will be releasing in the second half of the year either.

With that all being said, I do agree with you some announcements would be nice. For sure. I just don’t think we need them right this very second. After Paper Mario drops, we’ll probably get Pikmin 3, Mario 3D World and the Mario 3D Collection announced, with one other surprise game (I’m guessing a new 2D Metroid). But there will be plenty of third-party games to supplement as there always are, and companies are desperately trying to bring all their choice games over that Nintendo platforms missed because Switch wasn’t around when they released, or just get ported after other systems (pretty common for Switch and Steam, but that’s ok, A game tomorrow is just as enjoyable as a game today, and we’ve got plenty of games to play today). Switch had 3 very strong years. This is the intermission. Still a solid year, especially with so many great 3rd party games finally making the jump, but I suspect this year will remain a little port heavy while they gear up for round 2, which will be years 5, 6 and 7. The power hour years.

@GrumbleVolcano
I don’t see anyone trading in their switch in any significant numbers for new systems. For one, because Switch will only net $125 for v1 or Lite, while v2 will net $200 tops. That’s a drop in the bucket. And most people aren’t willing to give up an entire console library that’s in its prime just to fund 35% of an expensive new console that will have a small handful of launch titles. I mean, if needing more games is the issue, buying a new console is about the worst thing you can do because the library is so limited in the beginning.

Also have to account for the fact Switch serves a different need. Most people aren’t choosing one over the other, they’re choosing both together. A power console and the only hybrid handheld on the market which also just happens to have tons of great games you can’t play on PS/Xbox/Steam.

@JaxonH It's about swapping old for new. Like plenty of people traded in PS3 for PS4, Wii U for Switch, etc. even though there was absolutely no backwards compatibility.

Nintendo games generally have high trade in value even years after launch so I'd guess a Switch and these games would trade in for at least $500:

  • BotW
  • MK8 Deluxe
  • Splatoon 2
  • Mario Odyssey
  • Smash Ultimate
  • NSMBU Deluxe
  • Mario Maker 2
  • Link's Awakening
  • Luigi's Mansion 3
  • Pokemon Sword or Shield

There you go, the price of next gen becomes a lot cheaper. So it is realistic that systems need a consistent supply of upcoming games if they aren't to be forgotten.

@Grumblevolcano
Fair point with the game values, but Switch doesnt feel old yet. Its barely even at its prime. So ya... little gung ho on that assertion. This isnt like PS3. Switch is barely 3 years old and has half a decade ahead of it.

PS4s will get traded in. Xbox Ones will get traded in. But I'll bet my bottom dollar VERY few people go trading a Switch in, and even fewer due to not having a "big slew of announcements" in 6 month time frame

Yeah, this has been irritating me for months. There's so little for me to look forward to that my Switch is practically collecting dust.

@JaxonH Like I said, I think it'll depend on how expensive the next gen consoles are. PS4 and XB1 consoles will be worth a certain amount but games for those 2 consoles are generally borderline worthless for trade-ins a few months after the launch of the games so with BC/smart delivery it is worth more to keep them.

Hence if next gen is on the more expensive side I think you'll see more cases of trade-ins being like:

  • PS4/XB1 console + Switch games
  • PS4/XB1 console + Switch console + Switch games
  • Switch console + Switch games

@Grumblevolcano
I think you grossly overestimated how many people will willfully get rid of a hot system in its prime. Trading in consoles is when you’re trading up- out with a console you no longer play, in with its replacement. The amount of people who will trade an actively supported system, in its prime, One that provides an experience no other console can replace at that, will be slim to none.

Maybe a few games, sure, but even then, if you go to any gamestop you will find the amount of used games traded in on Nintendo systems are woefully lacking compared to trade ins on other consoles. People who buy Nintendo products simply do not trade in nearly as much, nor as often.

@JaxonH I think the pandemic will be the cause, by holiday 2020 there'll be less money to spend on non-essential items so more people will have to decide whether to keep what they have or replace it with the new stuff (hence why I think if the next gen systems are too expensive, Switch will dominate holiday 2020).

Though my comments were in the situation where trade-ins were possible, it could be that holiday 2020 is in lockdown.

Dont get me wrong I play my Switch almost daily - playing Dragon Quest 11 and Mortal Kombat 11 Online at the moment. Look forward to more announcements.

I'm also guilty of craving new game announcements but, as others have said, there's so much on the Switch already that realistically there's no need to be too obsessive about waiting for Directs. The pandemic has probably affected Nintendo's schedules too. But can you imagine if at next year's E3 Nintendo shows extensive first looks at BotW 2, Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3? Those three games alone would be enough to draw a fair amount of attention away from the next-gen consoles.

I think it would be nice to have a proper big Direct soon. And I think we will get one. After Paper Mario there isn't much left, so I don't think they have a choice.

BabyYoda71

@Octane I don’t think there will not be a ‘proper big Direct’ until September at the earliest, but I can see a Mini in June and the highlight will be Mario Remaster confirmation!

Heigh Ho Heigh Ho. It’s off to work (from home) I go.

@BabyYoshi12 Oh yeah that thing. It will be interesting to see if that's actually happening or not.

Between Clubhouse Games, Animal Crossing, Xenoblade Chronicles, Origami King, Minecraft Dungeons, Rescue Team DX, Sword and Shield DLC and hopefully Mario Remasters, Nintendo is having the best year possible in the middle of COVID-19. If you all think Nintendo is having a bad year, look at Pokémon. (TCG specifically) They announced their third TCG expansion of the year and it will launch at the end of August, meaning we’ll likely only get 4 expansions this year, in comparison to 6 in 2019 and the average of 5. Now they’re even releasing ‘a board game adaptation of the iconic TCG’ that’s basically just re-releasing TCG decks.

Heigh Ho Heigh Ho. It’s off to work (from home) I go.

BabyYoda71

@Octane I hope it is. 🤞

@BabyYoshi12 Why isn't Pokemon TCG on Switch yet?

Paper Mario looks good, but it's the same day as Ghost of Tsushima. So I'll have to make time for both. Really hope we get some BOTW 2 news soon; or whatever game they're planning for the holidays.

BabyYoda71

@Octane BOTW2 will be a 2021 game, but I think we’ll get some news before the summer’s over. I don’t think it will be their Christmas game, but I don’t know what it will be.

@BabyYoshi12 As long as it doesn't release on the same day as Horizon 2. I don't want to deal with that all over again.

@BabyYoshi12 nintendo might be having good year, but it feels like they're producing way less games. It'd be nice if they had a bit more variety on the horizon, like they did in the Wii Era. If you're not a fan of Animal Crossing or Paper Mario, it's not a particularly great outlook for 2020.

A new Project Zero, Eternal Darkness, the last story, pandoras tower, sin and punishment, starfox, endless ocean, another code, excitebots, battalion wars, mario strikers or golf would be nice. Or something original like astral chain.

They should be pumping out a couple of great games a quarter, rather than than a couple of games a year with a wiimake on top
