@Agriculture EA's loot box shenanigans make a lot of sense from a business perspective as well. Nintendo should also implement them in their games.

Considering how much of a PR and sales disaster Battlefront 2's release was, I'm not sure that's true.

Ugh. Men.

@Whitewatermoose

Well, we already have Dragon Quest Builders, Lost Sphear, Payday 2, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, Kirby, Dark Souls, Street Fighter, Mario Tennis, DK:TF, Most likely both Megaman Legacy Collections, Hyrule Warriors, GalGun2, Harvest Moon all launching by the end of May, so that's 15 right there. I don't think you need to worry about them hitting 24 notable releases by the end of the year. Even if you don't consider some of those notable, that's still at least 12 by month five. And we all know that most third party titles launch in September through November anyways.

as another point as I need to reiterate, assuming even that we know all of what is happening in the next 4 months (let alone the rest of the year) is questionable considering how bizarrely sudden Switch release dates are often confirmed. BOTW, Mario and Rabbids, Doom and a bunch of smaller games had release dates shown < 3 months before release.

Like I had no idea Fe was coming out next month? Even if that was known before this, it had vanished for a while so I assumed it was gonna take quite a bit longer to release.

I'm Not asking them to announce titles or destroy future reveals but they should set realistic expectations for the media, consumers and investors. This secretive nonsense is ridiculous

This is accurate, there was no logical reason to not announce it was a smaller direct beforehand if you knew your big first party title to announce was a Mario Tennis.

I’m new to Nintendo and therefore the directs. I don’t get Assassins Creed, Trion etc posting replies in the twitter thread. It gave the impression their games were to be included. Are they all just matey?

Anyway I was hoping for more open world ports like Skyrim. Rumoured ones like RDR, Fallout 3/4 and one of the MMOs being mentioned. Instead I got Dark Souls which is a definitely no buy for me. But I understand they can’t please everyone.

Switch: Dragon Quest Builders 2, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Valkyria Chronicles, Shin Megami Tensei
PC: Farming Simulator 22

KirbyTheVampire

@Roamer I don't know if we'll get a huge amount of those, really. Nintendo isn't known for open world games, although we have had a good number of those in 2017, with games like Breath of the Wild, Skyrim, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so who knows. We might get quite a few more, or we might not. Could really go either way at this point.

If Xbox or Sony would've come out with anything at all like this (handful of brand-new first party games, free DLC, fantastic indie lineup, remasters of a couple beloved first-party games all in 15 minutes), we'd all be singing their praises up and down the aisles. But hey, it's Nintendo - so get in line and complain.

Nail on the head, and this is something that always kinda irks me. Gotta love the gaming community sometimes.

I think this Direct was a build up to a proper Direct in mid February because Mario Tennis isnt the only new 1st party game this year.

I do hope this wasn't the only Nintendo Direct they had planned for the time being as it was pretty underwhelming when you consider the hype they deliberately generated. You can't really blame the fan base if they get upset.

Also, even though Nintendo obviously went all out for a big launch of the Switch, the fact they are now aiming for an additional 20 million in system sales in just mind boggling in unrealism if this is the kind of games they are planning to release for the first half of the year. There's no way there is going to be enough big hitters in the second half of the year to make that target possible unless they have some big announcements for the first half.

100% sure that Nintendo will have more announcements as time goes past, they don't even talk some of the titles that they said will come out this year (like Fire Emblem or Octopath Traveler)

Tbh the direct is really good, with TWEWY hitting most of my hype. I just don't understand why some people seem to go "it doesn't hit any of mine, so now this year will suck!" ignoring how nintendo released surprise games in just a few weeks/months difference at times.

I mean if I didn't count TWEWY, or if there's no Kirby mentions... while then it's not great, I see it as "oh, there's tons of new things released, goodie"

( o-o) Relax, being angry over it won't help yourself at all

@Harmonie
I'd rather see a port of smash/Mario maker and then something else rather than them put a huge amount of effort into a token sequel which does nothing but win forum arguments for the few people who, like myself, got them on Wii U. Nintendo and their partners spend if anything too much time on sequels. As does the industry in general. If a port does the trick for the vast majority and they can then move on? That's perfect.

@darkfenrir this direct has nothing big... the game youre excited about didnt they say was 10 years old? for the first half of the year so far, nothing has been announced. as far as NEW exciting games to look forward to we have Kirby and.... and I cant think of anything else.

I had fully expected something great the beginning of the year (jan-march/april) and kind of expected maybe another big hitter like march-june... octopath was originally supposed to be spring and now its who knows when. and as far as switch exclusives releasing this year.. that is the only big game confirmed for this year that i can think of right now.

I dont think this year is going to suck... I am looking forward to Kirby quite a bit but come on.. thats just a little fun game, its no xenoblade.. Im also looking forward to playing bayonetta 2 big time(cuz i never played it myself), but its not new and who knows when 3 comes out. Ima be a murderous zealot at midnight to get a physical copy of Dragon Quest XI on release this year... but no date on that. Yoshi just DOES NOT look fun to me and the music sounds pathetic. I still know there will be other big releases this year but so far this is all I can think of looking forward to. I mean its january and im over here thinking Nintendo dropped the ball on the first half of the year unless they announce something.

Inertiacreep

darkfenrir

@Inertiacreep I mean even 10 years old game is still fun (and great game to boot), with the extra scenario, I think it would be great at the very least. And like I said, this is first news, take a breath, calm down. Nintendo can surprise us down the line. (And probably more surprise material on the full direct).

Although then again my thinking of game release amounts is kinda... different? Since I probably can buy a "console" game every 2-3 month instead of every month ish. And I never minded to not play a console / handheld for 3+ months (aka the amount people already annoyed and said it gather dust). That's probably why I don't mind things as much, and I can adopt my laidback attitude over things.

darkfenrir

Inertiacreep

@darkfenrir yea, I am really hoping there is a follow up direct... but if there is a follow up direct, I dont think they should have did this one... for people waiting for news about new switch games this year, this direct was trash and after xenoblade hype and the christmas switch sales hype I fully expected Nintendo was going to come out with some NEWS.. not a barrage of ports.

I still have to beat Xenoblade and then after that im picking up Zelda (so excited) so ill be busy for a while, and then bayonetta 2 to keep me going..... but man I want some new game to be hyped about.

Inertiacreep

@kkslider5552000 It's not just you. I have a bunch of 2017 games I am still enjoying, plus a list of already released titles I'd like to play. I have a Wii U so I'm fortunately not that interested in the Wii U ports, otherwise my backlog would be huge. I'm forcing myself not to just buy everything that I know I won't have time to play properly. I'm even spending more time gaming since I got the Switch but still don't have time to play everything I'd like. I'm pretty sure most Switch owners will spend a lot less time playing than I do.

This is turning out to be an insanely good first year for a new console.

For me, this mini direct was disappointing. Maybe I will pick up Hyrule Warriors and DKTF (never owned a Wii U) but those titles are not convincing me.
A few things I want to point out is the way of presenting this mini direct. They didn't announce the direct but just put it online out of nowhere. Before this, they posted a tweet from the Chibi-Robo thing without any textual explanation. Nintendo did this on purpose and they knew that this would create a hype. Why did Nintendo doing this? Creating a hype for a mini direct would lead to many disappointments (including me). Maybe they are giving a full direct soon because we miss a lot of information.

  • We don't have any information about the online features.
  • No apps are availabe on the Switch which were on previous hardware generations of Nintendo. This isn't an extra but should be on the system already because of their existance on the Wii U and Wii. So it shouldn't be hard to implement them on the Switch I think. For me, I would love to have Youtube or Netflix on the Switch screen (going on a worldtrip and I prefer the Switch screen above my smaller phone).
  • There is no information about the MyNintendo points for the Switch. For many, some points will expire soon!
  • No information about the Pokemon game. Looking at the franchise and the market, some information should be shared with us. During the years we got trailers, gameplay, pictures, etc. from BOTW. Within a year (maybe a little longer), the Pokemon game will be released and the only thing we have heard is that they are working on it. Nothing more!
  • Nothing is known about Metroid 4, also a big game of Nintendo.
  • No Octopath Traveler news (and a release date).
  • Fans are asking information about Super Smash Brothers. Nothing is known about that. The same goes for a sequel of Mario Maker.
  • Virtual Console, what about that? Not a single clue is given.
  • No information about the UI of the Switch. The E-shop on the 3DS is looking better than the Switch E-shop. When can we make customized folders? Different backgrounds? Music? No priority for me but these shouldn't be hard to implement.

If this Mini Direct is the line up till Spring, then Nintendo will never sell 20 million Switches next year.

@Inertiacreep Well if you haven't tried TWEWY I would suggest getting some trailers to see to see if that game can hype you up.... I just hope that there's more news on this from SE side soon, guh. v.v

I hope Octopath will get some spot on the direct that will say the release date though, that will be great. :v hearing some of the ost they released to the wilds really hyped me up more about the game.

@rallydefault @KryptoKrunch Nail on the head my ****!

'Handful of brand new first party games'? Which were those, I must have missed them - take out the ports and the one we've known about already for at least 6 months, you're left with Mario Tennis.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

@rallydefault Please don't try and compare the Switch's Q1 line up with PS4's. With Monster Hunter World, Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Metal Gear Survive, Yakuza 6, Ni No Kuni 2, Far Cry 5, it is obvious which has the better line up. None of these are remakes or ports. If I included those for the PS4, the list would be even more immense. I enjoy multiple consoles, so doesn't bother me. Baiting a fanboy war is a little strange when I presume we are mostly adults.

You're upset that other people are upset. Sorry about that.

I watched the Direct this morning and thought it was pretty decent. I'm also not surprised that some have got their pitchforks out because that's what always happens. I think it is worth highlighting the timeline for 2018 as we know it just to cool things down a bit. Games we were unsure about before the Direct in bold

February: Bayonetta 1 & 2, Payday 2 (confirmed date)
March: Kirby Star Allies (confirmed date)
Q1: Mario Tennis Aces (new)
May: Street Fighter 30th, DKCTF (new), Dark Souls (new)
Q3: SNK Heroines (new)
2018: Fire Emblem, Hyrule Warriors (new), Project Octopath Traveler, Yoshi, TWEWY (new)
???: Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3

This was what Nintendo always does in an early year Direct. They've told us what they wanted us to know before E3. They're building hype for games that are coming out before, during and immediately after E3. Knowing that? I think we're in a pretty decent space. The lineup for the first half of 2018 looks pretty solid for what is usually the quiet part of the year.

@Harmonie Funny how we interpret the same thing from completely different angles. I view this "Mini Direct" the same way I did the Nindie Presentation after the Switch Event last year, i.e. a presentation to discuss all the smaller games that didn't/won't get mentioned in the main show. By that logic, I think that the purpose of this direct was to go over all the smaller projects (Wii U ports, DLC, etc.) to make way for a much larger Direct later on that will go over big things like online, Fire Emblem, triple-AAA third party games, and so on.
Even if that direct doesn't happen I'll still be fairly happy with the games revealed today. I was just hoping for more.

Totally makes sense, added with the fact that a Mini Direct has been followed up swiftly with a full direct consequently until now. But yeah… Who might say.

For the 3rd-party bashers: don’t forget that 3rd-party’s started the Switch cycle with the Wii U debacle fresh in the back of their minds. Seems fair that the Switch had to prove its value before scaling up development capacity for Switch games. And I really understand that Wii U owners feel disappointed, but for me it’s a great opportunity to play the ‘best of Wii U’ the coming ~2yrs. I would actually feel left out as a Switch owner if they would nót release their Wii U library on Switch.
